Our son really enjoyed his time with Janet! He's a sharp math student with straight As and was disappointed with his PSATs being in the 1300s- he wanted to get in the 1500s. He was skeptical on going to an SAT tutor- but Janet was great in helping him see that his issues weren't what he thought they were- he was making sloppy mistakes. So she practiced a couple different approaches with him over the 5 or 6 sessions until they found what really worked. My daughter went to AJ a few years ago and we had a good experience, but my recent experience with my son was awful. AJ charges very premium prices for SAT tutoring and for that you'd expect a very high quality service, but that was not the case here. The tutors we were assigned were short timers who quit after a few weeks (2 of them) and were not well trained nor did they really care about their students. We had problems with tutor turnover, process and methodology and billing. While they tried to make things better transitioning between tutors we ended up in the same situation with someone else who also ended up leaving. Can't recommend. read more

In order to return to her school as a senior, she needed to complete semester two of 4 required classes, one of which was Physics. She was enrolled for a 3 week in-person summer Physics course for semester 2, but the teacher taught at an AP level because the other students were prepping for AP in the fall (the course description was for regular Physics). The teacher emailed me that she may barely pass the class because of the high level of difficulty. We were unable to find an alternative because of the deadline in which she needed to complete her required classes. My daughter's stress level was high because the in-person teacher did not allow questions, the after-school on-campus tutors also had difficulty with the content, the deadline for finishing the required classes was fast approaching, and she still had to complete English and PreCalculus online. (She tried to learn on her own earlier, but had been unable to start on those classes due to her health issues.) I was familiar with AJ Tutoring because of the excellent job they did with my daughter's SAT tutoring, so I reached out to them. They responded immediately! They connected me with Ben for Physics and Gregory for PreCalculus. This review is regarding Ben. I have a separate review for Gregory. Ben called and he scheduled a session the next day! He had sessions on an almost daily basis with my daughter during the last 2 weeks of the 3 week class. He was extremely flexible with his schedule. My daughter finished her Physics class, and now had to start and finish semester two of both English and Precalculus (online classes) within 2.5 weeks in order to return to her high school as a senior. When I reached out to AJ Tutoring about PreCalculus, they connected me with Gregory. Gregory called me while he was on vacation! He set up a session for the day after he returned to the area. After the initial session, we decided to wait till after my daughter finished Physics before starting PreCalculus. After Physics, Gregory had PreCalculus sessions on a daily basis. He was flexible with his schedule which was helpful because my daughter also had to work on English. A couple of days had 2 PreCalculus sessions on the same day in order to cover the amount of material for her to take the final. Because of the upcoming deadline and final, at one point Gregory spent 6 hours in one session to cover the material! Gregory answered all of her questions, covered large amounts of material in a short amount of time, and my daughter said that he had the ability to simplify complex concepts in ways she could understand. My 5th grade daughter has been working with our fabulous tutor, Jamie Nguy, for about a year. My son just received his SAT scores and he scored in the 75 percentile. He went through AJ's winter (new) SAT Prep with John Richard. John answered all of my son's questions and did an excellent job in teaching the class. I never had to push my son to go so I know that he kept my son engaged in the class. We have worked with AJ tutoring over the last year preparing my son to take the SAT and then the ACT. First, as a junior my son took the SAT prep course with Daniel P as a instructor. My son did relatively well on the SAT but instead on retaking it he decided to take the ACT without practicing. He liked it a lot better so we called AJ tutoring and requested Daniel for some 1-1 ACT tutoring where our son brought his score up from a 30-33 after just 4 sessions. AJ tutoring is an EXCEPTiIONAL place. Thus far, I have had two of my kids receive test prep form AJ tutoring. Their tutors were extremely professional, kind and caring. They were true experts in the tutoring they provide. Both of my kids scored low on their first SAT exams, coming in around 1700, After a nine week prep stint, they both scored 2200 and above. My son opted for the group prep class which ran 9 weeks prior to the exam, and my daughter opted for the one on one tutor. They were both extremely satisfied with the tutoring they received. AJ tutor generously provided all study materials and practice exams were administered each week. My daughter was struggling with her AP Calculus class senior year. The teacher was an old crab who did not teach well at all. We enlisted the support of an AJ tutor weekly. Her name was Aly Malek. My daughter's class grade went from a C to a solid A, and she earned a 4 on her AP Calculus exam. AJ tutor offers AP tutoring in virtually every AP course, so if the teacher is not a good one at school, their support can certainly carry you through. Many students at out high school, Leland High, take AP exams for which they never took the course.This happens because many of the AP classes are so impacted that they cannot accommodate everyone who wants to take the oourse. In this case, AJ tutoring can provide excellent support in mastering the content and for passing the exams. Years ago, I was referred to AJ tutoring by a dear friend who had her daughter do test prep with AJ tutoring. Her daughter attended a prestigious private all girls school here in San Jose. She bombed the SAT exam. She paid a hefty amount for test prep at a fancy, Ivy league training center. Her SAT did not improve. Then she found out about AJ tutoring. Her scores rent through the roof. After doing the PSAT, I came here and studied with Jimmy Martin. Jimmy was awesome! He is really funny, flexible in scheduling, and incredibly helpful in giving advice. Not only did I get a huge binder that had every single practice problem that you could imagine, but Jimmy gave me tons of test taking strategies and tips that really helped my score. Moreover, there are tons of practice tests, and Jimmy was able to review all of my mistakes on them and clearly explain to me what I did wrong. Ultimately, my score improved about 100 points! I came back for the ACT, and Jimmy also really helped me to break down the test and figure out what I can do to perform my best. My experience with AJ was great! My tutor, Christina Coravos, was not only extrordinarily friendly and helpful, but also extremely concerned about my success. Additionally, The homework assignments were assigned in moderation (the time it took to do each assignment was not too extensive; most students will be able to find time to finish it). Another noteworthy aspect of my experience was that the homework assignments were tailored towards my individual needs. Though I scored almost perfect on the math section, we still found out the specific types of questions that I struggled with, and used that information to assign homework packets with only those questions. What I'm trying to say is that we did not waste time with the things I already had covered. Likewise, for English, we found that my main weakness was in reading, specifically the "two-part" questions ("which of these quotations best provide evidence for the answer to the question above?"). So, we honed-down on these questions and with the techniques I learned am able to complete them with ease. My daughter could not have had a better experience with AJ Tutoring on Los Gatos-Saratoga Rd.! She worked with both Jessica and Christina for help with the math subject test (level 2) as well as the ACT and they were both phenomenal tutors. We invested in several private tutoring sessions, rather than an overall class, as our time was limited and we wanted to focus on specific problems my daughter was having. It wasn't cheap, but it was well worth it as her scores on both tests improved significantly. AJ's and their tutor Matt Furman were a 'game changer' for our son. He started with Matt to prepare for the SAT and then the ACT. Matt did an OUTSTANDING job preparing him academically for both tests but more than that, he prepared him emotionally for both. At a stressful time for a teenager, he was able to help our son stay calm and go into each test feeling prepared and relaxed which was huge for him. He was able to increase his ACT composite score by three points from one test to the next. His belief in our son and his abilities gave him the confidence he needed to go into each test knowing he would do better than before. I cannot say enough about Matt and AJ Tutoring, would recommend it to everyone and do! Finding the right tutor for your child is key but from what I have heard, AJ has many to work with so that you will for sure find the right one. The interview I had with the AJ employee to find the right tutor for my son worked well, they knew his personality and who would be the best fit for him ... and he sure was!!
