They really get the business and understand the needs of both the children and parents. The have created the most professional environments and offices in many key locations of any other tutoring business. I've been to Menlo and Palo Alto. They are the best option and easily my wife's goto option in supporting the the brightest future for our kids. AJ has and was recommended by several of our friends who have sent their boys and girls to there with great results. My son had an excellent experience with Caleb Liu preparing for the ACT. Caleb is extremely professional, listens attentively to the individual needs and goals of the student and parent, and goes above and beyond to ensure the success of his students. He was recommended to me by a parent whom he successfully tutored with great results as well. I was especially impressed by him when there was a practice test hiccup, was super responsive in resolving the issue, and took it upon himself to do a personal makeup for my son. I highly recommend Caleb as a 5-star tutor for test prep. Overall, our experience with AJ was very positive, but there is significant room for improvement for practice test sessions. My son took two practice tests that were not well-organized and frustrated him because he had prepared for them only to feel like his time was wasted. I provided direct feedback to AJ because I was surprised that that this happened twice in a row to my son. I expected a premium tutoring service like AJ to be able to run practice test sessions routinely and smoothly because when they don't it causes additional stress and time on the students and parents. We needed a tutor at the last minute to help my son prepare for his IB exams. On top of that, my son didn't have a flexible schedule. Despite all these constraints, AJ Tutoring was able to help us. Ramon ("Ram") tutored our son in the Analysis and Calculus B/C subjects over the past two years, and we can't say enough great things about him. By the time we reached out to Ram for help last fall, our son was "in the trenches" of the Analysis course, struggling to stay afloat. By the end of the year, Ram helped him take full command of the course and thrive! This was no easy feat, especially given the demanding nature of the Analysis curriculum. We initially sought out AJ Tutoring to assist with prep for the AP Exam in Biology, but DeLeys also assisted my son with some substantive knowledge as well - DeLeys also does AP Bio tutoring throughout the school year. DeLeys was knowledgeable, helpful, and patient with my son who is neurodivergent. She prepped him very well for the test, and he received an excellent score. read more

Our daughter worked with Chelsea Greene throughout high school for math tutoring and had a fantastic experience. Math had been one of our daughter's weaker subjects and she lacked confidence in her ability. With Chelsea's support, our daughter grew comfortable with math and excelled in the higher math lane at Paly taking AP Calc her senior year (something we never thought would happen). Knowing she could review what she learned in class with Chelsea each week reduced her stress levels and kept her on track for assignments / tests. Our daughter has some learning differences and Chelsea was able to determine the best way for her to process the information. I had taken my son to AJ a few years back for English and Math. Right after the first class, the lady who taught my son English, came to us and asked in a hushed up voice if we would be interested in private lessons, so, she could bypass the AJ system and take all the fee for herself. We found her to be unethical. She was going to charge the same fee as AJ! read more

We were told "our college counseling support is online only, so we don't have any counselors available to work with you in person". I worked with Julian Simington throughout a data analysis class I am enrolled in as a sophomore in college. We focused on analyzing data in R and Julian was extremely helpful. He always made sure to explain concepts thoughtfully and made sure I understood before moving on. He helped me problem solve whenever we ran into coding errors and was always able to help find the source of the problem. We had scheduled weekly meetings, and on top of these, we would also meet sporadically throughout the week if I really needed help on an assignment or was nearing a big due date - which I really appreciated. We sought out a tutor with AJ Tutoring to supplement on-line zoom remote learning for these subjects, and we were happy to have the opportunity for at home in-person tutoring with Covid protections in place. We have been pleasantly surprised at how well our teen daughter (14 years) and son (17 years) have connected with Ben and have readily grasped the concepts for their math & science subjects. We highly highly recommend AJ Tutoring and in particular its star tutor Kristina Koh! She tutored our Gunn sophomore for both Honors Algebra 2/Trigonometry and Chemistry during the Fall semester with great effect. Our previous experiences with other tutoring agencies were relatively unsuccessful for various reasons, including poor English communication skills, stiff personalities, and overly dogmatic tutoring approaches that didn't lend themselves to personalized flexibility. When we approached AJ this past August, we first shared our needs and priorities. They then came back with a list of highly qualified and relevant tutors, from which our student interviewed several and ultimately chose Kristina. Kristina has been a wonderful partner and influencer on our student. Firstly, she has very strong command of the advanced math and chemistry subject material. Secondly, she has a very patient tutoring style that has been highly personalized to the needs of our 10th grader. Thirdly, she was able to work around the limitations induced by the Covid pandemic and proved to be highly effective tutoring via Zoom calls. Fourthly, she is very personable and was somebody our student could easily connect with and trust. I attended a 10-person SAT prep course at AJ tutoring my senior year of high school. My tutor was one of the company founders with a total bro-y attitude (he was either the A, or the J, in AJ). I have a variety of learning disabilities and he was incredibly condescending and repeatedly attacked my intelligence in front of the class. At one point I had a hard time with a bathroom key (I'm not great with keys!), and he audibly said something along the lines of "wow on top of it all she can't even get a key right!" He also frequently offered students coffee and every time I declined he would say something along the lines of "You really seem like you need it, you're never 'on'" He also made a number of rude comments about students who take the community college route, specifically referring to Foothill. The sentiment was "if you don't listen in this class, you'll do poorly on your SAT, and you don't want to land at Foothill with the rest of the losers." He frequently touted his UCLA alma matter, which is insane because UCLA is statistically one of the most community college transfer friendly schools in America. I'm sure he didn't think about that while he was attending classes alongside "looser" transfers in Westwood. I don't trust many Palo Alto business people who claim to strive "for a more equitable world" - because I can assure you AJ tutoring was just another money grab from a couple of confident college graduates with some seed funding. To Palo Alto parents - from a Paly grad - I urge you to reconsider sending your kid here. Your students quality of life will likely not be determined by these services or their school grades. I hope you spend this money teaching your kid empathy and compassion instead because that is a far greater metric for quality of life. read more

My son didn't think he needed a tutor for his ACT test, but his self practices kept scoring around 32-33. He then went to AJ Tutoring and worked 1-1 with Joseph Molnar in Los Altos office. Last week, his official ACT score was out and he scored 35. Joseph Molnar is an amazing tutor. He spotted and worked with my son on his weaknesses, taught him useful strategies, assigned practice homeworks. He also kept good communication with parents, letting me know what happened after each of their meetings. It all depends on the tutor you work with, and there is no quality control here. We went through tutors, giving AJ chances again and again until we got tired of the lack of quality. There are some good ones but overall, they are young, unemployed college graduates who aren't real teachers, they just took college classes. The prices are exorbitant for the quality. You are better off finding someone at an online tutoring services like we did. We also tried the SAT prep and that was a bunch of silly tricks that will not improve scores much. Don't waste your money here. read more

When my high school sophomore was struggling with her Chemistry class, we decided to give AJ Tutoring a try. They were very responsive, setup the first session with our tutor Promise Lee within a day or two. Promise is extremely patient and kind with excellent teaching skills, she understands high schooler's pressure really well, always finds ways to guide and motivate my daughter. The whole experience had been very positive. After the winter break, Promise even called me to check on my daughter's progress and discuss how to better support her. When it was time for SAT registration, Promise was the one who reminded us, and told us the various options. We are very fortunate to have found Promise.
