Our child worked with Micah Glass-Siegel on private high school entrance exams. Our child started preparing for it only a couple of months before the test date. Micah is very strategic about prioritizing what and how to study for the test, customized to our child's needs. Micah also identified and filled knowledge gaps that are in scope of the test but not yet covered in my child's school. While working with Micah, our child took multiple practice tests to learn how to manage time. Because Micah is so methodical in the preparations, our child feels relaxed when approaching the test. Our assigned tutor, Sagar, was excellent. He gave my son both a study plan and in depth lessons on how to approach the problems and questions on the SAT. My son acquired 220 points between the PSAT (which he took with no prep) and his final superscore senior year. They did all of their meetings virtually and it worked quite well. It's hard to review an in-person business during Covid, however, the Lafayette office does not offer a great testing environment for practice tests. The walls are so thin that the practice test room can hear the tutors and students in adjacent rooms talking. My son conducted his own practice tests at home. Then Sagar and my son would then score the test together at their next meeting. (To be fair: the environments for the actual SATs are not ideal either. It is typically an unfamiliar campus, far from home, and in the case of my son's senior year SAT, suffered from loud, intrusive noises during the test.) read more

I have had some other tutors before that have just not been worth my time, much less my money, but AJ really cared not only about me during the session, but all the time. the Saturday testing centers and quality instruction from really set AJ apart. In addition to this, I had a great tutor by the name of Sagar Patwardhan. he always was nice when I got something wrong, and it made me really comfortable. one of my big issues with learning is that I sometimes can get frustrated at myself for getting something wrong instead of working to solving it. He has been a great help to her as he explains concepts really well, provides her with useful tips for exam-taking and he's patient. My son has worked with Becca Woo at AJ Tutoring for over a year (ISEE prep and math/language arts tutoring) and I highly recommend her as a tutor.  The following are examples of our experience: Tutoring for ISEE: - Communication/Timely Feedback:  After each lesson Becca briefed us on our son's progress (e.g. where he performed well, areas for improvement, recommendations or tips on tools to use at home).  This was done either in person after class or sent via email within a reasonable time frame.  In addition, if needed, she would send a follow up email with resources discussed. - ISEE practice exam:  She coordinated with us and signed our son up for two practice exams including sending tips/reminders for each. - ISEE Practice Test Scores:  She did a great job explaining how the testing is graded and how to understand the scores. - Organization:  Becca was prompt with sending calendar invites for the class schedule and ISEE prep tests including planning ahead and taking into consideration holidays or vacations and adjusting the calendar invites as needed. Tutoring for Math and Language Arts: - Communication: Becca checks in and provides feedback on our son's progress in a timely manner.  In addition, as needed, she is in contact with our son's teachers to ensure her lessons are in sync. - Practice Problems:  When my son does additional practice problems (outside of the regularly scheduled tutor session), Becca takes into consideration his schedule. In addition, she uses different approaches (eg. kahoot, worksheets) that help to keep my son interested in actually doing the additional work. - Organization:  Consistent with what's noted above, Becca is super organized. Other: - In addition to being very knowledgeable, Becca has a wonderful positive demeanor which creates a great atmosphere for learning.  My son always speaks very highly of her, her teaching methods, and finds it easy talking with her.  Working with her has improved his confidence level when dealing with a challenge in both subjects. - She has taken the time to get to know our son and can dial up or down the sessions depending on the day, as needed. My son worked with Manasa for his ACT and SAT prep in 2020. With the pandemic, there were so many uncertainties as tests were canceled a week before the test dates. Manasa worked closely with my son to navigate the uncertainties and surprises. My son was preparing for SAT, but after the tests were canceled repeatedly, he pivoted to take the ACT and prep for it in less than one month. Manasa quickly created a new test plan for him and helped him ace his ACT exam at such a short notice. Luckily with Manasa's help and AJ's course material, he was able to score in 99 percentile. My daughter attended the Los Altos branch of AJ Tutoring for 4 months in preparation of her Lower Level ISEE for private middle school application, and studied with Caleb Liu. Prior to this my daughter struggled with reading comprehension and verbal, and her performance on mock tests was inconsistent at best. We had tried online tutoring in the past to little avail. AJ rates are pricey so we were a little skeptical at the beginning but it was worth every cent (especially relative to the private school tuition we would have to pay anyway). While AJ Tutoring can't help us to cram thousands of words in the head (you would have to do that on your own with lots of reading and flashcards), it has a very systematic way of tackling verbal and reading problems, and lots of good practice material. Caleb is a very patient and friendly tutor who really listens to students and parents, keenly observe their mistakes, and offered us detailed strategies on how to overcome them. He was also very flexible, offering us lessons at the times that suited us (8 pm on Friday!) which was priceless for families that need to juggle with lots of activities. Through those 4 months of intense weekly prep sessions, my daughter's verbal and reading improved from 50%tile (scored on mock tests) to upper-90%tile (scored on the real test). Kavya Ramanan has tutored my daughter for SAT and ACT preparation. I am very impressed with Kavya's tutoring skills. She is very good at figuring out which specific areas the student needs help with. Then, she puts together an excellent plan to work with the student in those specific areas and help them understand the topic. She uses the tutoring time efficiently and covers a lot of material during each session. She also teaches them great test taking strategies which did help improve my daughter's score by significant numbers.
