Based on good reviews of the Mathnasium system, impressions from talking with Beatrice and visiting the new location, we got started before the summer started. Getting started was very easy. After a test to see where my son needed help we were given a plan and got started. My child has been attending sessions this summer and will continue throughout this next school year. He is motivated and continues to go to math sessions with enthusiasm. Mathnasium offers incentives for the kids to progress and I have added some of my own at home. My son likes the incentives and he is gaining confidence in his math skills. This will not only help him in math this next year but I believe that confidence will spill over to other areas as well. As a parent I want to help my child but I'm not always able to be as effective as I would like. Beatrice and her staff have provided a great relief for both me and my son by helping him learn what he needs to learn and reinforcing what he already knows. The location has worked out well for us as well. She also helped him turn an initially disparate set of activities and extra-curriculars into something much deeper and coherent. She presented him with an amazing range of options (like online summer courses in entrepreneurship) which he enjoyed, looked impressive, aligned with his admission "narrative", and which we frankly would never have found without her. Finally, she was invaluable in compiling everything into the applications themselves and invested a ton in making each one as good as possible. This included essay ideation, rough draft reviews, and went all the way through to line edits with us of every final essay and application. I think I'm a pretty good writer, but the input and help that Jennifer provided my son was far beyond my expectations and much better than what I could offer. I believe that her effort, expertise, and attention to detail significantly increased the number of acceptances and options that my son ended up with. IThere were no real improvements among his 3 practice test AJ Tutors administered. I asked the instructor about this and he said it was typical but let's see how the SAT goes and then we can assess if we want a 1:1 session (more $$ of course). We received the SAT scores and the total score has no improvement. After the 2nd practice test I inquired if we could get a list of question that were answered incorrectly so we could focus/revise studying and it didn't happen. The program is very expensive to not see any gains or meaningful improvement in overall test score from the practice tests. Instructors should know how to get students past a plateau.

The other counselors I contacted were only willing to take on clients as freshmen or earlier.
