Well, there is much more to Pines Tap than old union workers, my friend. This place has the BEST daily dinner specials. Me, I'm partial to the Friday night fish fry, where you can choose from fresh lake perch, cod, frog legs, shrimp, or walleye for somewhere around $7. It's a steal considering how much food you get. And this fish is GOOD! The lake perch is some of the best I've had around---and I'm saying this after having Phil Smidt's and Teibel's and some of the other infamous perch houses of the region. It almost tastes like they took fresh lake perch--only hours old---and fried it in a Long John Silver's-type batter. The result is a crispy outside and a decadent, tasty cut of fish on the inside. If you order it with fries, you'll find this side to be just as tasty as the fish. And don't expect a hole in the wall, even thought Pines Tap isn't in the greatest location of Hammond. It is very well kept up, with a handsome decor in solid wood. The regulars can tend to be a little grizzly looking, though.

Most of these are made with whiskey. I liked the Oak Old Fashioned. This is Bullett Rye with aromatic and orange bitters, Fever Tree seltzer, and a sugar cube to top it off. Also we had the Pretzels And Dip. It's $7 for a few. This comes with a choice of cheese or mustard. It seemed like the prices were cheap. They could have charged a lot more and people wouldn't have thought anything of this. Good drinks and food. It also has good prices. The selection and quality of the whiskeys along with the food makes it a value.

She proceeded to tell him that we had to buy drinks in order to play pool because she didn't want the place to turn into a "pool hall." Keep in mind the place is very small and there are four pool tables. We complied. I ordered a Sprite, which is not alcoholic. However, at that point the lady behind the bar said she needed to see my ID because it was required in all bars. She proceeded to take my ID and write something down on a sheet of paper. My date and I are both black and everyone in the bar appeared Caucasian. The lady behind the bar was very unwelcoming. And since she couldn't directly say this is a whites-only bar she did her best to make us feel uncomfortable. So we decided not to spend our money there.
