The predominantly Muslim area of Quiapo was pretty much unexplored territory for me, until my choice to go on a Halal (and now, vegetarian) diet led me to the neighborhood in pursuit of good food that conforms to Islamic dietary laws. Anyway, exploring Halal food was an adventure and a learning experience for me, and Quiapo provided a really awesome and exciting backdrop for my exploration. Halal cuisine opened my palate up to exotic tastes, and here in Quiapo, one gets to experience Mindanao regional cuisine that is virtually unheard of by most of us Non-Muslims.
Of all the tribal cuisines from Mindanao, Maranao food seems to be particularly prevalent in Metro Manila, and one of the most enduring institutions for Maranao food, especially around the Quiapo area surrounding the Golden Mosque is Al Merra. The Maranao eateries around the area seem to be selling identical food items, but one would appreciate the great selections at Al Merra's. They have the typical "atay papar" which is chicken liver cooked in coconut milk, curry spices and coconut flakes. They also have the curried tilapya. Their rendang, though, is one of the best in the area. The dry and almost tapa-like consistency of their beef rendang is trademark Maranao - strong and robust taste that is best enjoyed with hot steamed rice and a tall glass of ice-cold Coca Cola.
Food here is cheap, and the implements low-key. Don't expect restaurant-like amenities, though. As with much of the eateries in the area, Al Merra's is quite run-down and shabby, but the food speaks for itself. read more
