We came for two nights while attending a concert at…read morethe wharf, which is located conveniently across the street, but somehow you feel like you're miles from everything (what is that sorcery?) and ended up wanting to sell all of my belongings, quit my job, and move here. I didn't want to go home, and that's the first time that's happened. This campground is BY FAR the best campground I've ever stayed at. Period. They have thought of everything, and I do mean everything. The sites are spacious, you're not on top of each other. You can rent golf carts and e-bikes, or bring your own. They have nature trails, a trail that connects to gulf state park, and several big fenced-in areas big enough for dogs to actually run around and burn energy, unlike other dog parks that just have a small rectangle. Their dog parks also have at least one tree each for shade, as well as a stainless steel built-in water fountain at ground level for the dogs! There's even a dog washing station so you can bathe your furry friends after a day of playing hard! There is a fitness center, a clubhouse for activities that also has two massage chairs with bookshelves, three separate pools (one is for adults only, age 19+.) The main amenities pool is at the very back of the campground and has a full restaurant that serves all three meals a day, as well as a pool bar that has a large assortment of beer, liquor, and frozen drinks. We got a margarita flight for $22 for 4 full-sized drinks, and they were GOOD! You can't take your own drinks or food to the main pool (with a bar and restaurant, why would you want to?) but you can take them to the adult pool and the pool at the welcome center, which also has a big hot tub and a view of the big lake where you can actually go fishing. There are fire pits, rocking chairs, and other comfy seating options at the pools. There is a large splash pad at the main amenities pool, a shaded cornhole area, sand volleyball, basketball courts, pickleball courts, an arcade, a big playground, and daily scheduled activities. If you're bored here, you're living wrong. You can check into this campground and never have to leave for anything. If you forgot something, just check the general store that's right there by the restaurant and arcade. They have it all! I've never been sad to go back home at the end of a trip, but I was this time. I was seriously trying to figure out how I could go home and sell our house and everything in it, quit our jobs, and just come live here. My kids (11 & 15) are going to love this place!

Gulf State Park Pier - Pier entrance from parking lot

The Gulf State Park Pier has been seriously upgraded since my last visit. It had been damaged and…read morethey have done quite a lot of repairs and updates. I had no idea that they had started charging to go to the far end of the pier as that wasn't the case when I last visited. As a veteran I get free parking and also free entrance to the pier. I never saw any signage that indicated I had to pay to walk out to the pier but I did get yelled at for just walking out on the pier past the "commercial zone" and had to show my military veteran ID to proceed. I found it odd that I was somehow magically supposed to know that there was a fee or requirement to show my veteran ID when I never saw any sign to that effect. The lady that yelled at me came out of a door so she was inside where I couldn't have seen her so they should certainly add some signs that explain what they want more clearly to avoid weird situations like this. They also have a restaurant and bar here but I would suggest eating somewhere else. The pier does seem to be a decent place to fish and I saw several people bringing in some nice sized fish. Overall this seems like a good option if you want to fish off a pier or just enjoy the great view here. If I had to pay to just walk to the end of the pier I wouldn't have done that as you can get a good enough view from the "commercial zone" where the bar and restaurant are located. Overall this is an interesting spot to check out but I just heard they have raised the price of parking so that might make this area less attractive to visit.

I provided ample notice and understand that unforeseen circumstances happen. We also had to cancel several other resorts at even longer stays and those resorts were very understanding and offered full refunds or minimal fees for cancellations ($25-$50). Unfortunately, Sugar Sands refused to issue any refund at all, keeping our payment despite the significant lead time. It was disappointing to see such a lack of flexibility. It appears they are likely to re-rent the site to another guest, effectively making double the profit, which adds to the frustration. Overall, this experience was disappointing and should serve as a warning to others considering a stay. Just don't go here because there are way more realistic, accommodating resorts!

The fact it is located right on a small stretch of inter coastal waterway makes it worth the while to stay here. However you have to tune out the constant traffic noise of the over pass directly above! This only applies if your lucky enough to get one of the two spots where p As Chris Farley said, "I live in a van down by the river ..!" Needs the words added "under the bridge!" The people are nice, but the row of campers permanently parked along the water leaves 2 spots available for transient people coming through. Otherwise, your in a mobile home park complete with old broken down trailers and all sorts of broken machinery around including old vehicles outside of old worn out decks and custom awnings. People have grown out of their trailers and have refrigerators and "junk" strewn about everywhere. In spite of that it is safe and the people are nice who have the view. They have it all! The rest have to deal with looking st each other and talking over the road noise. Pot holes fill the streets guaranteed to shake everything loose inside your rig, the public spaces such as the bathrooms... well just look at the pictures and you decide. I walked in, looked around, turned around then walked out never to return. My camper was sprayed by the ferrel cats that dominate the shoreline. I'm an animal lover, but I'll be dog gone if I'm gonna let cats smell up my trailer!

I am very disappointed. I have camped at Southport before, and have been attempting to contact them to make a reservation for about 3 weeks. First, upon calling the voicemail box was full. Then, when trying to call again I received an auto text response that indicated that they were on another line. I have e-mailed the address listed on the site twice, neither of which received a response. I tried calling again multiple times and received the same text. Finally on April 30th, I decided to text the auto response message and request information on a reservation - and got a response requesting to know how many people and tents I would need. I replied with the information, and that was the last I heard from them. It is now May 8th, and after repeated voice mails and text messages requesting information on the rental, I have been completely ignored. The phone has never been answered and I have attempted to call many times. I would not recommend this campsite to anyone.
