WHAT, how do I NOT have a Yelp review here... Quality/Quantity - Nice local small marketplace, supermarket. My daughter has been driving 30+ miles for her sashimi grade fish and I suggested she come here instead. So today, I mainly came to share and prove to her that they sell it here. See pictures. Other departments that we frequent are: Coffee shop, Greens & Grains Salad restaurant, Farmstead Cheese & Wine, Sushi King, Feel Good Bakery, Tahina (one of our favorite restaurants), East End (one of our favorite happy hours, $1 oysters, etc), and of course the grocery departments, etc. These departments and businesses are all independent and locally owned. Is the tea shop new? But closed or soon to be open...? I have not seen this here in the past. My wife bought a few loaves of bread today. Atmosphere - Clean, a locally organized medium size supermarket. Plenty of mall parking. Indoor/outdoor seating. Service - Good. Price - Slightly above average, but that is the cost for quality. Definitely stop through here if you're looking for some unique items. Its giving cute/fancy market place & has other vendors in there but still has a wide variety of well stocked shelves. I just stopped by for the first time to pick up a Burma Love Vegan Tea Leaf salad kit & thankfully they had a few in stock. I did call before to check they carried it but didn't ask specifically for the vegan version so I was grateful they had it, I'm not sure if they usually carry the original/spicy kit but they had other grab n go Burma love products . Even though I was only in there for 5 min, I still scanned a few isles & was able to find a bunch of vegan options, so I grabbed my fav MyForest Foods Bacon, So Delicious Whip, lions mane burger patty & some Tamales. This is close to my house so it'll def be a go to for my vegan needs. ** The following review reflects my experience DURING the COVID-19 pandemic. ** This red brick building is actually a key touch point for me and Jamie W. because we sometimes stroll Park Street from Alameda Beach to here and then back again. On a fair weather weekend, it's a pleasant walk because there are lots of places to stop and grab a bite. What makes this destination attractive is that there are ten separate businesses housed in here, and they've been able to control the foot traffic to survive this pandemic. You enter from the parking lot side, and you may have to wait a bit if it's busier than usual. We've had the huge salads at Greens & Grains and the hand rolls at Sushi King. An extensive butchery and bakery anchor the line of shops, but most of the space is actually devoted to the organic offerings in the Alameda Natural Grocery store. I like this Market!! I was in here pre corona, so I don't know about current changes. It's a little pricey, and the parking lot is a little cramped sometimes, but inside I saw a sushi place, pizza place and a bakery inside. All are very small with very limited seating, basically it's set up to go. The market has a nice sized wine collection area, and the market itself is bigger than the other areas. This place is absolutely amazing inside. So many different treat offerings from different vendor/restaurants inside. My favorite is Tahina. Unfortunately, while waiting for my food near Baron's seafood & Meats, a HUGE RAT came scurrying out from Baron's while I was sitting across the way at the sitting bar area. I was horrified and it really ruined my experience. I hope this RAT issue gets resolved right away! It was awful! read more

"Karen looms large, at Alameda Marketplace" 530 Sunday evening Sept 18. Purchased a bag of popcorn at the market place, while eating the popcorn, my wife was at the register purchasing $137 of items for home. The clerk asked very loudly in front of all present, "sir did you purchase that popcorn"? Bewildered, wondering why I was asked such a question while sitting right in front of the register waiting for my wife's purchases to be completed. The clerk said that her manager asked her to question me, I suppose she assumed I look like a guy that would steal a bag of popcorn and blatantly eat it in front of them. My apologies to the clerk, your manager shows both poor judgement, and cowardice. Next time she asks you to play rent a cop, think twice! It's christmas eve. Mary Angel rings me up with her RUDE bagger or coworker who tells me i'm next by wiggling her index finger up and down like she flicking on and off a light swich or something.I thought she was saying hi to someone and i get rushed to the cashier. I'll definitely have to return and peruse the other places located in this cool place..i saw Farmstead Cheese and Wine, pizza place, a sushi place and specialty/gourmet groceries. Sort of an industrial chic feel to this place, very similar set up to the one in the city on 10th and Market... only this one is smaller. A bakery, meat and seafood, natural grocery store, cheese and wine, the Beanery, East End and more. The Bakery is ok for lunch, even better for dessert. Its expensive but some of the stuff is really good. For example they have the most beautiful pies around. East End is known for pizza chicken and drinks. Baron's meat is known great meat including more unusual meats - rabbit/goose and grass fed local/sustainable Organic groceries and health supplements. There is a restroom that operates on coins just past the butcher. Grab a token when you are at the register. Parking is ok - spaces are small. Out door seating. Very pleasant experience. read more

UPDATE: I think management figured out how to keep their staff and customers safe. I went back yesterday (4/23), and the guy at the door was actually limiting the number of people inside the store: one person out = one in, two out = two in, etc. Finally. When I got inside, there were no employees crowding the aisles and forcing customers to crowd into aisles with them just to grab one item. Everyone inside the store was wearing a mask and shoppers were being quick. Everyone seemed to have a list and no one browsed aimlessly while their children ran around unsupervised. I was able to get in and out, and was never forced to run an obstacle course. read more

There needs to be some consistency here with their Covid protocols. I've been here often, especially during the SIP. 1. I went here to pick up a Mother's Day cake and a woman who was behind me was wearing a mask that only covered her mouth and not her nose. She kept creeping up behind me super close, even though they have markers on the ground. Then, when it was her turn to order, she took off her mask to talk and kept getting really close to me. Thr employee did not say anything correct her. 2. I've been here when the security guard is outside and on duty. I think he does a great job at making sure everyone uses sanitizer and wearing masks before they enter. It's when he's not on duty when things get crazy there. (See #1, he was not on duty when the woman mentioned above entered.) 3. Another time the security guard was not working they had a grocer working the front. Usually the security guard lets you in if you're going to one of the vendor kiosks and no the grocery store. They have their own socially distanced lines. This one day I went I thought that I could go to Feel Good Bakery and stand in their line like he usually allows, but the grocer working the table started screaming at me. She said that I had to wait in the line outside whether I wanted the grocery store or not. When I asked her if it was a new procedure, she was very snotty and rude to me and told me to wait in line. I like this place, because they tend to be "safer" than other grocery stores. If the security guard is on duty I'm more likely to shop here. Unfortunately, since that snotty grocer was rude to me I haven't been back. Their prices are way more expensive that normal grocery stores. read more

Decent shop and selection despite the markups, but I stay away because the clients are awful, nosy people who think it is OK to take things out of your basket and tell you how terrible a person you are for purchasing [thing they don't like]. The attached bakery staff are also uncleanly, wearing the same gloves to grab bread and pastries as they do to take cash and cards from people. No washing of hands, no changing of gloves, and definitely no use of tongs. read more

I'm not sure how I should proceed from now on because of tipping baskets and credit card readers placed at the cashiers counter in the store today. Is there a choice for non-tipping or choosing amount I wish to tip, if any. Please be aware that some of us shopping there are also minimum wage workers or are on fixed incomes. They are adding more onto our grocery and meat bills than we already pay in the store. Terrible place. You think their customer service would be great considering you are paying way more than you would at trader joes. They had smaller eggplants which will make my ratatouille look uniformed. So I gave them one star for that. 3 checkers but only one was technically open. All of them with shitty attitudes. When one of them finally opened up she took the people in back of me even know I had like 2 items. We stumbled upon this cute little marketplace while scouting Alameda for excitement. It's so cute! It's very Andronicos meets Whole Foods meets an actual marketplace. There's a little coffeeshop, a little bakery, and a wine shop. There were lots of those cool, hipster, microwavable food. There wasn't a big selection of beer, but there was a whole lot of biodegradable, organic, fair trade fun stuff. Of course, there's a trade off that you pay for to get all your hipster food. But it's just so cute and you feel good shopping here that it's all good. read more

I dig the bakery and wine and cheese shops most. I have had a good poke around in the food market itself, and, in general, have been able to find what I need/want like Brown Cow and Strauss Family Creamery brands. The bin food section is reasonably stocked. When I last went in there seemed to be a tahini deficit Alameda-wide (TJs no longer carries straight tahini, Lucky's was out-of-stock...), and AM was my last stop before giving up on the idea of making hummus. AM did have tahini, but only their most expensive brand (at around 14 bucks) as all others had sold out. There's something about the overall space that doesn't jibe with me. I'd like it to be a bit livelier in AM. (Maybe I always go during their off-peak times?) Anyway, I think the quiet vibe may have something to do with the lack of general seating for those who wish to purchase and consume on premises. I mean there is *some* seating, but, if I were in charge, then I might take away the massage 'corner' that never seems to have any business when I shop at AM, and put in two and four-top tables in its stead. Or, instead of a massage spot (I've never been one to combine buying groceries and a back rub, really), I'd put in a proper florist! read more

I like this place for the bakery and the cruelty free beauty supplies. The only draw back is the woman who works in the health and beauty section now. There used to be a person who was absolutely wonderful, she gave me great advice and was so welcoming. I have been a customer for over six years and this woman acts like it's the first time she has seen me every single time. Additionally, if I return something she acts like I have committed a crime. It's a real turn off. I like to go and decompress and look around and the last time I went she was so hostile and acted as if I didn't belong. The little natural grocery is nice. They have a small but useful produce section, lots of organic stuff. Much less intense than Whole Foods and Berkeley Bowl. The staff was helpful in finding various items. The gift shop right across has great dish towels and kitchen accessories.
