Well-stocked and well-staffed grocery with easy, free parking. The meat dept is very good, like 8.5 or 9 out of 10 in terms of variety, cuts, seafood, and butcher service. Produce is also excellent with organic and non-organic on virtually every item. Cheese corner is really good with dozens of varieties and sizes. I like their liquor and wine section, and can't imagine very many situations where they couldn't cover my needs. The prepared food is not worth the trip for that alone, and is really pretty uninspiring. They stock everything I need. They have great, consistent people working check out. Prices are higher than Safeway. Specialty stuff is not as strong as Diablo Foods in Lafayette. read more

I love this market! It's sophisticated with it's selection, but has an old school small town vibe. The wine/liquor section is well curated, the meats are top notch, the produce is fresh and well maintained, and they offer organic fruits and vegetables as well. Looking for cheese? There is a hidden nook across from the meat case that offers an amazing, well curated selection of cheeses. Prices in some areas are a little bit higher than somewhere like WF, but they are not a massive corporation, so it is understandable. The staff works like a friendly cohesive team offering great customer service. The market was full of customers, but they did a fantastic job at not allowing lines to form. Let me just start off with this is no Safeway or Raley's. This is a specialty grocer. Thus saying it's pricy and high quality. They have their own butcher counter that looks fabulous. So many good looking meats and varieties of sausages. I wish we could shop here more often, but it's totally out of our price range. We came here on a whim. We were in town for a couple of days and needed lunch later that day without having time to go out. We looked at their inhouse prepackaged refrigerated meals and picked out some eggplant parmesan and went to the prepared food table and took home a half a quart of butternut squash soup. Lunch was warm and filling on a nice chilly day. I was happily surprised that the eggplant parmesan came out so well. It was nicely breaded and wasn't soggy and was very flavorful and not mushy. It was just like a restaurant, other then we had to heat it up ourselves in our toaster oven. The dishes come in tin containers. This is not a place I can shop in regularly, but when I can it's a treat. read more

Because beef prices are now so high everywhere, I've been cooking pork for my family regularly. I was searching for a store with quality pork and had hoped Piedmont Grocery would be a safe bet because its meat and seafood section is so immaculate. I bought the bone-in pork chop from Niman Ranch priced at $10 a pound and was looking forward to dinner. I cooked the pork chop medium well. My wife and I took a few bites and were revolted by the funky, rancid taste of the meat -- it clearly was almost rotten. We had to throw it away as we didn't want to risk food poisoning our child . This grocery store is special in that it has a small selection of specialty cakes from Full Belly Bakery - I bought an amazing tiramisu cake which I brought to share with my family on a reunion trip in Gualala. They loved it, I loved it, and we are particular when it comes to tiramisu. read more

I shop at Piedmont Grocery fairly often, and while the butchers in the meat department are always professional and friendly, the experience at checkout is very different. Most of the cashiers come across as rude or uninterested in customers. One employee in particular -- a heavyset, mixed-race woman with short blonde hair and noticeable blue eyeshadow -- consistently ignores customers. She carries on personal conversations during the entire checkout and never acknowledges the person in front of her. Unless this is some kind of mental illness (in which case, I genuinely apologize), it's incredibly rude and baffling that management allows it to continue. On top of the poor customer service, the store is overpriced. For example, I've seen a simple box of crackers cost $8 here -- the same box is cheaper at Whole Foods, which says a lot. It's frustrating because the meat department is excellent, but the front-end service and high prices really bring down the overall experience. read more

However, I have noticed mistakes on my receipt a couple of times recently, for example charging for two bags of pasta when only one was purchased. Piedmont Grocery is a great store, which has a wonderful variety of foods. My sister and I shop there once a month because we do not live in the area but always make sure that we get there because they have specialty foods in addition to meats and a special cheese section. Here is what is unpleasant - if you ask a question of the woman who is usually working in the cheese section, you are treated as if you should have been able to find what you are looking for without asking her any questions. In addition, when you get to the checkout, you meet very harried and unpleasant cashiers. No smiles, just a snappy interaction which leaves you exiting the store with your groceries but an unpleasant feeling because you were just treated like they couldn't care less if you shop there. Of course, I have previously seen some customers which must have been known to the store, not treated like this. This has happened every time I have been there. There was a very rude older woman wearing a mask at the cashier station. Didn't make eye contact or rather say a word to me when I was checking out. She carried on conversation with a coworker then slammed the receipt on the counter after I paid. What convinces me to check out this business is they have hot soup (4 different soups each day) and a hot bar. I did not know they have a parking lot in back of the store. The front entrance facing Piedmont Avenue is the exit door. Okay, I have to walk around the corner and down the block to reach the entrance. I know the next time I come here with my husband I don't have to look out for street parking. I would have bought more groceries, but being parked about a block and a half from the entrance it would have been impossible for me to carry three bags of groceries to the car. A cell phone call to my husband was useless. Their meat department have fresh beef, pork, etc. Nothing is packed in those Styrofoam trays and plastic wraps. Even the seafood department is quite impressive. Fresh catfish, shrimp (salad shrimp, too) are on display in the refrigerated case. Yes, the groceries are pricy, but well worth it for the quality. I will definitely return to browse the produce section and baked goods. The only drawback is the aisles are somewhat narrow. Customer service is very good. Cashier is helpful and pleasant. read more

Piedmont grocery reminds me of Berkeley Bowl, but smaller in size and selection. They have a good variety of fresh gourmet mushrooms (chanterelles, oyster, etc) and potatoes and squash. Lots of health-conscious foods and brands available. They have a small section for prepared foods, such as soup, rotisserie chicken, and salad by the pound. Prices range $7 and up. I ended up buying some Cardamom Tea Cookies (6 pack, 1.5 diameter) for $7 and they were a perfectly melt in the mouth accompaniment to hot tea. Reminded me of Vietnamese tea cookies. The grocery has its own small parking lot, which is a plus, as street parking can be tough to find on Piedmont Ave. read more

Piedmont Grocery is going through a renaissance. First, they expanded their meat department to include many ready to cook meats and chicken. Now, with a new deli manager, they have tremendously expanded their prepared foods. I always went to Market Hall, and now I have started to shop at Piedmont Grocery. One of the things I love is the spare ribs, and the crab cakes made in house. Also, I am excited about a new line they are carrying, Edith's baked goods. Today we enjoyed with the brisket pocket, it was delicious . It is so nice to have Piedmont Grocery in my backyard. The parking is a nice bonus. read more

First time in and I was so pleasantly surprised. It is great to have the dedicated parking lot right next to the store. I was so impressed about the selection, I never expected it. Very nice produce, including a good range of mushrooms and really fresh herbs. My chives were waiting for me in a container full of water to keep them happy! I was also betting against them having the rice cauliflower I was looking for, but there it was in the pretty expansive frozen food section. I swung by meat counter just to take a look and again, the selection was awesome and the butchers were waiting to help. It is little pricier than the chains but that is okay. I love living near an awesome neighborhood grocery that has a local yet gourmet vibe. I stopped by a few days ago- prepare yourself for a line as the employees practice social distancing by gradually letting folks in. The staff were also in very positive and cheerful moods, even in the midst of a pandemic. I welcomed this and it elevated my shopping experience and my admiration for these brave essential souls. Some notables I grabbed were the garlic butter, Acme sweet batard loaf, some Beecher's handmade cheese (OMG so good), turkey pastrami (to die for). Yep- some key ingredients to the sandwiches I was going to make at home. (I can attest they were absolutely delicious - I added the garlic butter on the acme bread, grilled it and then added the cheese, turkey pastrami, some basil, tomatoes, and some spinach.) Amazing. The products are very fresh, high quality, local - from the cuts of meat to the vibrant produce to the highly desirable baked goods. This is also the place where you can find "that ingredient that you just can't find in other stores." Sure they are a little more $$ but super worth it. I picked up the potato and leek soup from the deli department and asked if it was vegetarian. I was told it was. After getting home and starting to eat, I noticed some pieces of meat in the soup. I called back, and they told me the wrong soup had been placed under the "potato and leek" label. This was really disappointing, especially since I confirmed it was vegetarian. I hope they take more care in labeling and handling food going forward--this could be a serious issue for people with dietary restrictions or allergies. read more
