Maybe it was old cake they served me but it was hard and dry. I probably won't be back to El Sol. Too many other bakeries serving superior cakes for the same price.

While it took some coordination on my part, we all made it and it's the best insider peek into this Bay Area institution that started in a small bakery that has grown so very much! Our guide Jennifer was a wealth of knowledge and so very fun to lead us through the history and operations of this business. The average person just doesn't appreciate all the work that goes into the foods that we eat. We saw the warehouse where the raw goods are stored and then onto the production floor! We saw the flour coming out into the massive vats, loaves coming out of ovens, focaccia going into convection ovens and all the steps in between. We were gifted an amazing bag of products that included a sweet baguette, sour battard, a bag of granola, bag of croutons, a morning bun, bag of cinnamon bread, biscotti and a bag of cinnamon bread. Unbelievable!!! They are such a family oriented organization that values community that they regularly donate product out. Items that come back from the stores and those that have an opps are sent out to become feed for chickens! I've always loved Semifreddis and now, I love them more. There are no public tours. Only way in is via a donated tour or via hosted events for 2nd grade and up classes. What a special day for me and 19 of my friends and family. Thank you!! Ps. First off, the store is very casual with abundant seating and second, the staff is very friendly and quick. As for the slices, they were fantastic! The pizza dough is firm with a slight crisp to it and the toppings are all organic and top notch quality. I ordered a cheese slice for my kid and a couple Sweet Little Piggy's for myself. You can only order takeout from here. Can't even walk into the bakery. You order from the window on 28th Ave and let the guy know what you want. The menu is straightforward, with bolillos (french rolls) being their most popular item at 75 cents each. They also sell baguettes for $2.50 each and a variety of croissants. Everyone ahead of us was ordering a ton of bolillos, so that seems to be the thing to get here. We ordered 5 of the bolillos, a plain croissant, and a baguette. So much yummy baked goodness for ~$8! The car drive home felt extra long because the bread smelled SO good and we couldn't wait to get home to give the bread a try. The quality of the bread is amazing. The bolillos were crunchy on the outside by super soft on the inside and were indeed the perfect sandwich bread (thanks Reddit!). We used the baguette to make breakfast sandwiches for the next couple days and really enjoyed that as well. The croissant was MASSIVE and full of buttery goodness. I don't think you can go wrong with anything on the menu here, especially at this price point!

Parking is limited as they are generous to sell to the public. There are delivery vans loading up bagful of their bread. I'm amazed to see these unknown shops buy their bread and likely turn it to a delicious meal. The bread is so soft! The chocolate croissant is always sold out when we get there around 11am. The best part is they open at 5am everyday, where not many businesses open that early and sometimes not everyday.
