What a candy store! I went looking for a gift and found a veritable plethora of cane sugar and corn syrup overflowing the Alamo Candy cornucopia!!! They have Latino candy in bulk along with many US or other international options. Most of the aisles are bulk offerings, but they have quite the selection of singles off to the side at the back of the store. I didn't buy a piñata or filler for one, but if I wanted to teach my child to wildly swing a bat at objects while blindfolded and hopeful catch her uncle with a nut shot if I am lucky... this would be the place to stop! The ladies at the checkout counter seem to get a bad rap in many reviews. What the heck do you want? Do you need a personal candy tour guide? This is probably not your store! Do you need to simply pay for your selections and leave, they are great! Go now, buy candy, and get in your car to head home. The Samame family has been perfecting their unique candy recipes for years and decided to open a store/factory in 1991 to fill growing local demand. They specialize in sour candy creations such as the Sour Pickle Balls, which once sparked a hilarious social media eating challenge. They also have a knack for adding Mexican spices and flavors to American candy, like the Bloody & Gummy Bears with chamoy... yummm. In addition to making and distributing their own candy, spices, syrups, and shaved ice, they also have a great selection of candies from around the world. This place is awesome if you have a sweet tooth. Even if you don't, you will likely be able to find a snack, toy, or decoration that tickles your fancy. It can be difficult to shop in moderation and don't arrive hungry or you will overspend. Even if you don't like the typical Mexican inspired candies, Alamo Candy also packs chocolate and nut treats and sells brands other than their own. They have candies that are popular today and some candies that have been around for decades. There is also one room that sells party decorations and refrigerators filled with unusual flavors sodas that you are not likely to find readily available at grocery and convenience stores. I've been meaning to come here since they opened. I finally came here because HEB kept running out of my favorite Cherry Bomb candies and they sold them in different sizes here. The employee told me they are always sending Cherry Bombs to HEB but I guess they don't stay on the shelves for long. Of course I ended up buying the huge 3lb container! Eh, i used to really like this place and loved going in and roaming through the aisles for everything i needed/ wanted. Until my last visit. I walked in to their new location and went straight to the front to ask if they carried a specific product. Instead of simply saying no or even asking what it was they(it was 2 older ladies) replied with a really smart no and when i smiled and said ok, they started talking about me before i even walked off. It's almost like a party store. Piñatas, snacks and all the things you could ever want to stuff them with. Clearly the store is filled with Mexican inspired sweets of the spicy/salty kind but there are plenty of the American based confections offered here. I was most excited to find some childhood favorites and had memories of going to traditional dulcerias when I was a child. We also managed to find pickled eggs. Came to Alamo Candy Co. last Sunday. I was familiar with some of it's products that are available at HEB. Once I walked in, I realized that I was severely lacking only shopping at HEB! There are SAM's Club style metal shelving lining several aisles. Not only do they have the regularly expected chamoy/lucas offerings but also regular candy a la Party City. For instance, they have different colored chocolates cover in candy shells, lollipops, Troll brand Brite Crawlie, Pez in every cartoon/Disney theme possible, etc. Honestly it's overwhelming once you walk in but in a delicious mesmerizing way. Near the register there is also a fridge stocked full with Topo Chico, Mexican Coke, sliced fruit and ice cream galore. Honestly I could go on and on about this place but I'd like to leave something to the imagination and have you experience this candy company for yourself. They take card, cash, first born...wait just the first two. If you don't normally like mexican candy then this is not the place for you. Yes it can get crowded but that just means they sell good products. Wish there were more smaller items available such as the mexican lollipops since some bags you cannot see inside. Either way, this place is great for adults and kids, perfect for keeping dentists in practice! Stop by to have sudden tastebud overwhelming syndrome. Horrible customer service. Placed an order a week ago without any email updates after requesting status for 2 days. All I received after they took my money was a UPS confirmation that a label had been printed but the package was never picked up or dropped off. I purchased the Texas shaped peanut pattie to sent to California for my aunt's 76 birthday. It was mailed the next day and she was so happy to receive her favorite candy. The Texas shape was an extra bonus since she has not be able to travel back for a visit. I spoke with her last night and she explained they could not break using hammer, dropping on floor, soaking in water, etc. I called the store to suggest they remove all remaining products. All other products I purchased were fine. I've patronized this store in the past and never a problem. Stay away from the Texas shaped peanut patties. read more

This was such a fun treat! I enjoy candy shops from time to tome especially if they have some specialty items. This place was fairly crowded. You can't tell from the pictures but the store isn't huge. There were so many interesting candies and sweets and there's option to buy them in huge quantities as well. My kids really enjoyed this place as did I. I enjoy mexican candy in small amounts and I like how they infuse tamanrind in almost everything. This place is a fun visit. Heaven...pure heaven! If you're a lover of mexican candies both sour, spicy, and sweet, and have no morales of how bad this place is for you, then you need to come here like now...right now! This place is a gold mind of chinese candies, lucas, pickles, ice creams, candies,fresh fruit, and more. They sell by the bulk and in smaller size packages. It's really small and the parking can be a bit insane, but its worth it. Only downfall is that it can get very crowded and the wait to check out can take a while. We waited in line at least 20 mins before we were taken care of, but you can browse all the other candies in the isle while you wait. This is definitely the place for you if you are having parties or fundraisers to buy everything in bulk. Or if its all just for you, no judgment here because I feel you...lol. Oh-em-gee, this place is the BOMB. Seriously, it's like Sam's, but ONLY FILLED WITH DELICIOUS THINGS. They offer tons and tons of bulk candies, nuts, and other fun items. Many of the items they sell are made by Alamo Candy Co, but they also sell the standard Blow Pops and Jolly Ranchers. They also have a freezer section where you can purchase yummy ice cream and mangonadas. They offer a lot of the spiced candy you see around at local HEBs, but in various sizes, so you can buy as big of a box of spiced gummy belts as you wish! I purchased some of their chamoy that is made for raspas, and it's perfect on basically everything. They also sell chile salt, which of course I purchased to go along with my chamoy. Runts, gumballs, thoes wax bottles with juice in them and much much more. I assume the make all the chile covered and sour candies around town at this location. They were all at my disposal. Chinese candies in all flavors and every kind of sour belt imaginable. The parking is a little tricky and don't go around four. So Ali and I were driving towards downtown and she says "Oh, a candy store!" One illegal U-turn later and we are inside Alamo Candy Co. So right off the bat, this is not a candy store in the traditional sense. It's a bulk store for people that sell cande or have an Ice cream/candy truck. That's not to say that you can't just buy a 30 pack of gummi worms and go crazy at home. Selection is very good. Many candies we hadn't seen in a long time and a large selection of indecipherable mexican candies with flavors outside my comfort zone. First let me start by saying that I personally have not visited the store but from what I can see from the photos-I can't wait for the next time I am in San Antonio to stock up and buy a suitcase worth of snacks (and I'm not joking). I ordered some candy on line because I was craving some candy from back home-sour pickle balls, chamoy, two pickles in chamoy, and some pickle belts. The reason for my low score is the price for shipping -I paid almost $50 for shipping alone. At the moment I thought-i want this candy, let me see how it all tastes. Plus I figured if I am paying this much (since there is not an option for rush shipping or standard shipping) I assumed it would all be packed and shipped immediately. Nope I was wrong. I think it was another 3 or 4 days after payment for them to pack it and then I received it about 5-7 days later. I went on line again to order some more and the difference between the candy I want and the shipping is $2. I just can't see myself paying $70 for 4 items. I can buy clothes and shoes on line and pay less than what Alamo charges. Instead of buying any more items on line, I have contacted my parents and my best friend and they will buy me the candy and send it to me when they have time. It all fits in a priority box and can send it for half the price that Alamo candy is charging me. Plus the money I save, I can buy a gift card to their favorite restaurant as a thank you for their trouble. Recommendation to Alamo Candy: relook at your shipping charges. It's very expensive and it's not as fast for the amount people pay. There are home grown San Antonioions all over the US & we all want a piece of home when we get homesick. read more
