I had their medium sized mangonado and small watermelon agua Fresca for under $6.00. Their elote is really good as well. The portions are huge and their ratio of chamoy, Lucas and mango sorbet is on point. If you are paying by credit or debit card, your purchase must be at least $5.00 or they will charge a fee of $.50cents. It's warm inside El Tropico so that's something to keep in mind. This is my favorite paleteria in town! I always look forward to the warmer months because it's the best time to stock my freezer up on reasonably priced and delicious paletas. Everything tastes incredibly fresh and the owners put so much attention to detail. This shop truly stands out. I've tried a lot of their paletas and have liked every single one. Their yogurt ones are surprisingly delicious! I recently tried their mango and mango/chamoy shaved ice. It's the softest ice I've ever had and it tastes just like fresh mango! It also stays frozen for a surprisingly long time- my sister got a large cup of it and it was still in tact almost an hour and a half later. Try everything! Their elote cups are the right amount of spicy and come fully loaded. The chilindrinas are also awesomely packed with goodness! They remind me of the summer months I spent in Michoacán when I was younger. The aguas frescas are also the best! My favorite is the coconut and nut flavored one! I always get it when I go. They recently moved to a newer and larger location and I'm so happy for them. The new space has more room for the long lines we've encountered during previous visits and plenty of seating room. I like El Tropico mostly for their corn cups and aguas frescas. I don't think the corn is straight off the cob, but I prefer it this way because that means there won't be little corn hairs all up in the corn cup.The contents of the corn cup run throughout the entire cup and not just the top portion (cheese, chile, lime, etc.) like some other corn cups around town. All of their aguas are very good, my favorites are the coco nuez and pineapple. If you ask, they are more than happy to allow you to sample a few. The chocolate bananas are a nice, different treat. The nachos were alright, the cheese was a little bit watered down though. When it comes to the fruit cups, I usually pass because the fruit looks like it's been there for a good portion of the day and it's cut up into little tiny pieces. My friends daughter had some ice cream and she was kind enough to let me try some, it was tasty :) What really stands out is the service... It was 9:58pm and I was craving a corn cup (I know how horrible of me, gasp!) so I called El Tropico and the nice young lady (the entire staff of employees are outstanding) told me that they were closing but would be happy to take my order. Luckily, I only live about 15 minutes away so I was there in a flash and I even added to my order! They even held the door open for me. Now that's what I call stellar customer service. I love the shaved iced- they have flavors like limon, tamarindo, sandia, mango etc. The portions are generous and inexpensive. I wish there was a drive though option because of COVID. This is one of my favorite spots in San Antonio! The elote en vaso is the best I have ever had- both in Mexico and here in the United States. They use white corn, and it is always hot and fresh. The shaved ice-tamarindo and mango chamoy are my next favorite. I am not a huge fan of their ice cream, but that is mostly because I am not a fan of the flavors (gansito, nuez, etc.) It is a family shop run by a husband, wife, and their son, and it does get packed- be patient- they will get to you and treat you with the same respect as the person they are busy serving. Found this place when we were looking for fruit cups! They have so much variety, I have gone there three times taking new people each time. They offer ice cream, fruit cups, Rusas, corn in a cup, agua frescas and paletas. It was a lot to take in, so I recommend you look around before you make any selections. My pops loves ice cream, and he was happy to hear they make their own ice cream, fresh in house, and was even more excited to be able to sample some of them before making a selection. We tried tres leches, marzipan, and queso fresco. YES, queso fresco, the white cheese that is sprinkled on top of your tacos. They made an ice cream out of that flavor, and it's pretty good too. We decided on the marzipan flavor which had that dry peanut butter taste that is so delish. I ordered a Rusa- which is mineral water, cucumber, mango, chamoy, chile, lime, squirt and a slew of other ingredients that come together to create a perfectly salty, spicy and savory drink that is deliciously refreshing.
