Kudos to Alamo for being the pioneer in offering food and drink while watching movies. While they started with pencil and paper ordering, they have now upgraded to scanning a QR code to order online through the menu. Very .easy and convenient! Not only do they have good food and "bottomless" popcorn bowls, they also sponsor fun preview events to their special Victory fan club members, of which I am one. Last night they previewed the movie "Power Ballad," an excellent film starring Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas. Often they have special guests to introduce the movie and offer fun contests. At the Power Ballad preview, they awarded a guitar to the first person to jump up and name the director (John Carney). I didn't win. The theater is definitely geared to film buffs and not the normal blockbuster movie goer, with posters from current and classic films decorating the walls. They even have the scary twins from "The Shining" in one of the hallways. You won't see that at any multiplex movie theater! read more

Alamo used to be the best in the world, then corporate parasites went to town on it and now it completely blows. $160 for 3 people to see a movie. The prices are just insane. You can't order from a menu anymore, only an app, which DIDNT WORK, so I had to leave the theater to order and flag down some random employee in the hallway. Going to have to deduct two stars for removing the long loved Austin favorite green chili queso and replacing it with some unappetizing, worse than gas station, queso. What in the world happened? ‍ Also, if you get a side salad, they don't put any dressing, cheese, or tomatoes. Corporate American skimping on the food. I regularly frequent Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar to view movie screenings. This time around we had 3 people in our party and there were only 2 seats remaining in the theater and the staff accommodated us by moving one of the handicap seats to accommodate everyone in our party. This was a very kind gesture that went above and beyond and was greatly appreciated or we would have been turned away from the screening by the PR company coordinating it. They have a variety of quality food items to choose from on their menu. I love the popcorn, with all the flavor combinations with my favorite being Parmesan and herb. The price point for food has gotten a bit high but you do get unlimited free refills on soft drinks and popcorn. They used to charge for extra Parmesan herb seasoning on refills, but in my last visit that was no longer the case. I also love the fried pickles and dry fried cauliflower with the vegan ranch dip. They have some really good food options for a theater. So my last screening experience to Mother Mary, we were seated late and this resulted in me not being able to order my food though the new QR code/phone ordering process. It was too dark for my phone to scan the QR code so someone took my order verbally. Then come to find out that they no longer had the Frito pie which is what I was trying to order. So they brought me a paper menu and card to write out my order which I did. Well, no one came back to pick up the card even though the light was on until the very end of the movie. Also when they brought the cauliflower, they forgot the vegan ranch dip so I had to get up and track someone down to get it which interrupted the movie viewing experience. Then I was charged and automatic service change and gratuity on top of that even though I was not satisfied with my service or food ordering experience. This was very frustrating to say the least. So now I am experiencing some issues that I have not previously had before which caused some stress and anxiety and diminished my experience. They had a short commercial before the movie started explaining how it worked. I went in the morning so I didn't purchase anything, but now I know what to expect. I remember reading about Alamo Drafthouse in a book called "The Art of Gathering" by Priya Parker. She highlighted their unusual phone policy. The second push to get me to come here was a friend who posted a silly photo of her running in front of the MI: 8 fan installation. While AMC/Cinemark/Regal types can have those photo ops as well, in my experience they're less consistent. I was worried the MI: 8 one would be gone by the time I visited, given it had been several weeks since opening weekend but I was relieved. I booked an afternoon matinee of Wes Anderson's The Phoenician Scheme. The seat was comfortable & the view great! (Besides that one time I ordered a soda water with lemon three times because it never came, only to find out that it kept being accidentally sent to my confused friend next to me... that was quite funny). I really wanted to like this visit because the recliners at South Lamar are actually great, but the service was a total mess for our Avatar screening. The waiter took my order right away, but then I sat there for 15 minutes waiting on just popcorn. I asked someone to check on it and they told me it would be out shortly, but another 15 minutes went by and still nothing. By this point we were already 30 minutes into the movie. When I finally flagged down my actual waiter to ask again, they told me the order was never even put in. I didn't get my food until 40 minutes after I ordered it. I also tried the hot cocoa and cookies since the menu says they are freshly baked. They definitely were not. They were hard and honestly tasted like they came out of a package from a grocery store. I returned to the Alamo Drafthouse to watch a movie. I went on a Friday and during the day. There are less people there on a weekday during the day. I parked in the parking lot and walked into the building. At the front as you walk in you can buy tickets. The person there was nice and answered my question about the seating. I bought my ticket and went to the theater room. While in the theater room I had a chance to look at the menu and before I knew it a waitress came over and greeted me. She took my drink order and gave me more time to look at the menu. She returned after about 5 minutes and I placed my order. She did a really good job throughout. I ordered two waters, the pretzel which comes with mustard and queso and a Royale Burger without cheese and a side of tortilla chips. I got my pretzel first but didn't start eating it until I got my waters. Luckily it wasn't a long wait for my drinks. The pretzel had salt and was soft and warm. I enjoyed eating it with the queso. The Royale Burger is a hamburger that has a beef patty, cheese, bacon, caramelized onions, lettuce, tomato, and aioli. I ordered mine without cheese and added a fried egg and avacado. The burger was really good. The combination of ingredients was filling. I couldn't really taste the aioli but the burger was delicious regardless. The tortilla chips were a good side as they were crispy and I didn't mind eating them with the mustard from my pretzel. Overall it is a great place to go watch a movie. This is the saddest review I've ever had to write. I have gone to Alamo since I was a teen (I'm 40 now). It was always incredible. Unfortunately, through the years I've noticed it declining. The food isn't as good as it used to be, the menu options are basic, and even when they have movie-specific menu options, they're all the same - some rendition of a hamburger or wings and a spooky mixed drink that's price tag is the spooky part. Anyway, my husband and I still go, though after the new ordering announcement, we were reluctant. We went opening weekend of The Bride! As it was the closest theater playing it. We had couch seats that Sunday evening. It wasn't packed, but there were a decent amount of patrons - too many for the couple of waiters we saw working during the movie. After I saw the tag to scan and order, I started putting together what we had decided on. A waiter ran up and told us not to worry about ordering online, he could take our order. He asked that we press the button to continue ordering like before, except not to write anything down any longer - he'd just take our orders. Rad! We preferred a human anyway. We ordered a couple drinks and appetizers. Apps came pretty quickly, but it took 20 minutes to get drinks. Mine came first, my husband's came about 10 minutes later. We decided to go ahead and order entrees and more drinks since it took so long to get drinks the first time. I pressed the button as directed, and our waiter ran up. I said, "we'd like a hamburger and..." dude ran off before I could even finish. I felt like an AHole, but I pushed the button again. I said "I'm sorry, I want done, could I get a pizza and..." he ran off before I could finish. At this point, we were like f-it. We didn't want to bother the guy a third time in a row pushing the button. It also appeared like he was one of only two servers in the theater, so he had his hands full. Eventually, the second server brought our entrees, but when I tried to ask for drinks, they ran off. Also super busy. Our entrees were not great, just boring, honestly especially for the price point they charge. Also, what gives getting rid of the beer buckets? I could have ordered husband's drinks in one go if there was still that option. After a while, our server came back for last call and I asked if we could please get the drinks we'd been trying to order. He repeated the drink order to me, then told me he'd be right back. Eventually, my drink came, but not my husband's. I asked if he got it. He said he'd be right back, then came back to tell me he'd closed out my order and forgot the second drink, so he would have to open a new tab for that second drink. My husband shook his head. The movie was almost over, so it was kind of pointless. Over $112 later including tip (not including tickets) and we agreed it would have been better to just go to a nice restaurant instead of paying top dollar for a subpar meal. This is in no way on the waiter either, he was nice, but stretched insanely thin as Alamo has chosen to grossly understaff during movies with the new system. Additionally, had they just stuck with the old system, writing down the order, we would have been able to order without issue. The greed and lack of heart are very evident now with the sad experience and low-end food at high end prices. RIP Alamo. This poltergeist prancing around as Alamo sucks. read more

The theatre we were in was nice size. However room and walk way in front of the chairs does not do best for taller people. Was cool to have the Shining area. It's so cool to be able to see movies at this iconic theatre. The best part is seeing George Romero hanging in a hallway of Room 237 Doors. Pittsburgh represent! The seats are so comfy. Service is efficient and friendly. Food and drinks brought to seats are always accurate with order placed and yummy. The food and bev prices are pretty decent compared to what you'd pay for just popcorn and junk snacks elsewhere. Saw the Elvis movie and the whole experience was great because they were still using the old paper-and-pen, no cell phones policy at South Lamar, at least as of that weekend. Took my wife and father-in-law to see the same movie at Lakeline and the experience was aggravating and demoralizing thanks to the new phone-ordering-only policy (check the recent Lakeline Yelp reviews to see what a disaster that has been). Hoping that maybe the powers that be are holding off instituting this at South Lamar at least, because it's my favorite theater in Austin and I don't want to have to consider a future of having to drive out to Flix Brewhouse. read more

They still show the majority of the films in limited release, so if your heart is set on something like that, this is the place you'll find it. They frequently have something unique from a studio promoting a film on display as well. This is a great theater to make an afternoon/evening in south Austin. Grab a meal and a movie! If you're a movie buff, then you need to see a movie at this theater! This was my first time visiting this location. I did not realize it was recently renovated. There are so many photo ops in the hall and the entry is literally out of "The Shining." Say hi to a projection of the twins on your way in. We came on a Tuesday not realizing that all movies are $7 for BFD (Big F'n Deal) Tuesdays. Apparently there's no limit on how many movies you can watch. If you're on a budget, take advantage of this offer. The theater is connected to a parking garage and it's free. There are two additional parking garages in the shopping complex if you can't find parking in the main garage. This location is connected to a bar called The Highball. We didn't go in, but it looked fun. Our server was Tim and he was really nice. He explained the updates that they've made. The huge differences are the leather recliners that are clearly numbered, individual tables with cupholders that swivel in front of the seat (so glad they got rid of the long tables), and the call button to page the server. Each table has a light under it so you can see the menu and you still write down your order on a slip of paper located under your table. We shared a bowl of Bottomless Popcorn. It was plenty and we didn't need a refill. I also had a Raspberry Bramble and it was really good. Before the movie started, they announced that 18% gratuity is added automatically so you do not have to tip unless you want to. I've always been a fan of Alamo Drafthouse because it's quintessential Austin. Get there early for unique and interesting previews. They still offer cool activities like the Sing-a-longs, Brunch Screenings, and Master Pancake (a live version of Mystery Science Theater 3000). It's been many years since I've attended those events, but I used to go all the time when I lived in Austin. It's something fun and different to do. I don't go to the movies too often, but after visiting Alamo South Lamar, it's making me want to go see more movies. Love Alamo Drafthouse and this location didn't disappoint. Been here two times and both times were as expected. The parking can be a bit tricky just due to the number of peeps around so get there early. The garage on the same side as the theater seems to be a bit larger with a couple of levels. Each time the service has been great, the ease of ordering while the movie is going and at the end paying the check is seamless. It's been a minute since I last hit up Alamo Drafthouse, but what better reason to come back than for the new SNL Movie? Spoiler alert: the movie delivered, and so did the Drafthouse. It's great to see this Austin staple still doing its thing post-COVID! First off, let's talk about the vibe--it's as cool as ever. Friendly staff everywhere you turn, with lots of smiles and "hellos" before and after the movie. As you walk through the hallway to your theater, there are plenty of cool photo apps; be it an old school movie poster or snapping a quick photo in front of the few ops of The Shining. My server was a rockstar: super friendly and attentive without being all up in my space, which I totally appreciated. It made the whole experience smooth and chill. The milkshake machine was broken, so I was a bit bummed to not be able to enjoy my favorite Brandy Alexander milkshake - a definite must have each time I visit! I grabbed some Peanut M&M's and settled for my giant ice water. Now, let's talk tech. Drafthouse, I love ya, but can we get tap pay going soon? I get the whole keeping-it-classic vibe, but tap pay is just so convenient these days. Let's bring it into the 21st century, y'all! All in all, great time, great staff, and great movie. Great place to be catch a movie and food! The food here is better than most dine in movie theatres and I love each location had their own theme layout and decor. I love going to Alamo Drafthouse! The variety on the menu is fantastic, I personally love getting the loaded fries and a kids size shake to not feel too guilty. I took advantage of a great offer on the Season Pass, where I got an extra month free. It's been perfect for date nights with my husband. Love this location and the Mueller one because it's a nice walk before or after the movie. Plus, they validate parking at the garage next door, which is really convenient. Service is great, they're super nice and the seats are comfy and clean. However, a couple of things could be improved. You can only book movies through the app, which means paying a convenience fee, and if you change your mind later, you can't change your booking to see a different movie without losing that fee. Despite these small issues, the overall experience has been great for us. read more

Pros: *the serving tables swivel so you don't have to sit up while you eat or have food in your lap *you can see over the tables Cons: they don't recline enough. Your legs are left at like a 45 degree angle. I heard the person next to me mention it and my friend who arrived a few minutes after me said the exact same thing. Three people in less than five minutes had the same disapproval. My waiter was great. He was very respectful and quick to pick up used plates as he went by. I ordered the fish and chips and it only came with two pieces of fish. It usually has three. I was a little sad about that. :( They added an 18% service fee onto your bill and your can tip on top of that if you'd like. Does that mean they are pooling tips?? If I tip extra does it go to my server or into the pool? So many questions left unanswered today. ;) I saw PAST LIVES. I loved the movie. I highly recommend. there is no longer any service at all, and in opposition to everything the Alamo once stood for, instead of banning distracting cellphone use, it is now REQUIRED. No one will help you unless you annoyingly have to pull up your phone, and even then, they hate to give any service at all. Tips are mandated so they don't care, even though you have to do everything on your own and annoy others in the process, while distracting from the film. The Alamo clearly was bought out and lost its entire soul and purpose and character and reason for going there. The food and drinks also suck now. The staff has become rude and unfriendly and the menu options are pathetic. It has become nothing more than a generic and boring and worse than annoying corporate buyout chain, and it is no longer a good place to see anything. I really like Alamo! It has been about 1 year since I've been back. The seats are always comfy and I love the in theatre dining!! It's always a vibe! I went to the Wicked Brunch they had and it was amazing. My main issue was with the service. I came alone and a friendly group of people took their seats next to me. Their order came within about 15 minutes (I'm talking multiple orders) I placed an order before the film even began and I didn't receive my order until the last 15 minutes of the movie!!!! (mind you the film is almost 3 hours long) it's unacceptable and very frustrating!! I informed the waitstaff multiple times. It was all very strange and ruined my movie experience. I never want to have an experience like that again and don't know if I'll return. I really hope they improve their service because there's no excuse for this level of poor service.
