Kudos to Alamo for being the pioneer in offering food and drink while watching movies. While they started with pencil and paper ordering, they have now upgraded to scanning a QR code to order online through the menu. Very .easy and convenient! Not only do they have good food and "bottomless" popcorn bowls, they also sponsor fun preview events to their special Victory fan club members, of which I am one. Last night they previewed the movie "Power Ballad," an excellent film starring Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas. Often they have special guests to introduce the movie and offer fun contests. At the Power Ballad preview, they awarded a guitar to the first person to jump up and name the director (John Carney). I didn't win. The theater is definitely geared to film buffs and not the normal blockbuster movie goer, with posters from current and classic films decorating the walls. They even have the scary twins from "The Shining" in one of the hallways. You won't see that at any multiplex movie theater! read more

This saddens me. I have written a bad review for you guys before, but hoped I could leave a new and improved one. My relationship with Alamo has been long, like I've gone since Spike and Mike's used to do sick and twisted festival of animation events. It's my go to. It's my don't-go-to-other-theaters-out-of-loyalty spot. The last few times have been beyond subpar. I didn't want to believe it was over. Tonight, I went for Spiderman at 11:30 PM. I've been promising this to my husband as a date night. It was the one and only time we had a sitter (we have a 6 week old child and a 1.5 year old - so it's been a while since date night). Husband is service industry, and it was literally the only time we had a sitter after he was off of work. We ubered to Alamo, which cost about $13. We paid for the sitter. We get to Alamo and they're closed. We get shit happens, but let Victory members know in advance. Even a 30 minute heads up would have saved us an uber ride or allowed us time to find tickets elsewhere or have a date alternative. Nothing. The staff were apologetic, but didn't seem all that concerned about it. They told me I'd get a refund, that's it. No vouchers to another show. No voucher for food/drinks. The vouchers were sitting in front of the cashier and would have made a world of difference, but she acted indifferent and never offered them. Just a "yeah sorry, you'll get a refund in 3-5 business days". What about the refund for the time, ubers to/from, and sitter? That's where vouchers could have somewhat saved the day. It wasn't important to staff or Alamo because it wasn't their time, ubers, babysitters, or incredibly needed date night. I wasn't even a Karen about it. I tried to tell her I'm sorry she had to deal with issues at the theater and that it probably sucked for staff as much as it does customers, so I get it. Not her fault. She just acted very WHATEVER. RIP Alamo. We will not be back. This could have been fixed, but it wasn't and there was no real effort. They have my email from my Victory account, so why no heads up so we could try to catch the film elsewhere? Why no extra effort to give vouchers? Hell, if we got to the counter and were told the card on file was refunded, that tiny effort would have been something. Alamo was built for people who LOVE cinema. It had a loyal following, but everything that we loved about it is dead and gone. It's sad seeing the current "Alamo" corpse be paraded like Weekend at Bernie's. So instead, we will stream at home once it's available. We will partake in what's killing cinema because Alamo just killed it for us. Thanks but no thanks. read more

Alamo used to be the best in the world, then corporate parasites went to town on it and now it completely blows. $160 for 3 people to see a movie. The prices are just insane. You can't order from a menu anymore, only an app, which DIDNT WORK, so I had to leave the theater to order and flag down some random employee in the hallway. I've been going to Alamo since they opened in the 90s, now I'll never go back. The greedy new owners completely ruined it. read more

Going to have to deduct two stars for removing the long loved Austin favorite green chili queso and replacing it with some unappetizing, worse than gas station, queso. I regularly frequent Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar to view movie screenings. This time around we had 3 people in our party and there were only 2 seats remaining in the theater and the staff accommodated us by moving one of the handicap seats to accommodate everyone in our party. This was a very kind gesture that went above and beyond and was greatly appreciated or we would have been turned away from the screening by the PR company coordinating it. They have a variety of quality food items to choose from on their menu. I love the popcorn, with all the flavor combinations with my favorite being Parmesan and herb. The price point for food has gotten a bit high but you do get unlimited free refills on soft drinks and popcorn. They used to charge for extra Parmesan herb seasoning on refills, but in my last visit that was no longer the case. I also love the fried pickles and dry fried cauliflower with the vegan ranch dip. They have some really good food options for a theater. So my last screening experience to Mother Mary, we were seated late and this resulted in me not being able to order my food though the new QR code/phone ordering process. It was too dark for my phone to scan the QR code so someone took my order verbally. Then come to find out that they no longer had the Frito pie which is what I was trying to order. So they brought me a paper menu and card to write out my order which I did. Well, no one came back to pick up the card even though the light was on until the very end of the movie. Also when they brought the cauliflower, they forgot the vegan ranch dip so I had to get up and track someone down to get it which interrupted the movie viewing experience. Then I was charged and automatic service change and gratuity on top of that even though I was not satisfied with my service or food ordering experience. This was very frustrating to say the least. So now I am experiencing some issues that I have not previously had before which caused some stress and anxiety and diminished my experience. I went here for the first time during sxsw to see the new Red Hot Chili Peppers documentary. The seats were super comfortable in the small theater. One of the workers came around and asked if we needed anything. I kind of knew what to expect, but this is a pretty cool movie experience, You can order food and drinks during the movie. They had a short commercial before the movie started explaining how it worked. I went in the morning so I didn't purchase anything, but now I know what to expect. I remember reading about Alamo Drafthouse in a book called "The Art of Gathering" by Priya Parker. She highlighted their unusual phone policy. The second push to get me to come here was a friend who posted a silly photo of her running in front of the MI: 8 fan installation. While AMC/Cinemark/Regal types can have those photo ops as well, in my experience they're less consistent. I was worried the MI: 8 one would be gone by the time I visited, given it had been several weeks since opening weekend but I was relieved. I booked an afternoon matinee of Wes Anderson's The Phoenician Scheme. The seat was comfortable & the view great! I have cancelled my all in season pass due to the repeated issues applying the all in food discount. Today, Alamo corporate announced they are switching to all mobile ordering during the movie. I can't recommend Alamo anymore. It was a good run. read more

I really wanted to like this visit because the recliners at South Lamar are actually great, but the service was a total mess for our Avatar screening. The waiter took my order right away, but then I sat there for 15 minutes waiting on just popcorn. I asked someone to check on it and they told me it would be out shortly, but another 15 minutes went by and still nothing. By this point we were already 30 minutes into the movie. When I finally flagged down my actual waiter to ask again, they told me the order was never even put in. I didn't get my food until 40 minutes after I ordered it. I also tried the hot cocoa and cookies since the menu says they are freshly baked. They definitely were not. They were hard and honestly tasted like they came out of a package from a grocery store. I returned to the Alamo Drafthouse to watch a movie. I went on a Friday and during the day. There are less people there on a weekday during the day. I parked in the parking lot and walked into the building. At the front as you walk in you can buy tickets. The person there was nice and answered my question about the seating. I bought my ticket and went to the theater room. While in the theater room I had a chance to look at the menu and before I knew it a waitress came over and greeted me. She took my drink order and gave me more time to look at the menu. She returned after about 5 minutes and I placed my order. She did a really good job throughout. I ordered two waters, the pretzel which comes with mustard and queso and a Royale Burger without cheese and a side of tortilla chips. I got my pretzel first but didn't start eating it until I got my waters. Luckily it wasn't a long wait for my drinks. The pretzel had salt and was soft and warm. I enjoyed eating it with the queso. The Royale Burger is a hamburger that has a beef patty, cheese, bacon, caramelized onions, lettuce, tomato, and aioli. I ordered mine without cheese and added a fried egg and avacado. The burger was really good. The combination of ingredients was filling. I couldn't really taste the aioli but the burger was delicious regardless. The tortilla chips were a good side as they were crispy and I didn't mind eating them with the mustard from my pretzel. Overall it is a great place to go watch a movie. Went to the Invite on Friday and was extremely disappointed with new system of ordering. It is very distracting to have people around you on their phones constantly ordering or just okay to view their texts. The waiters were unwilling to get me a water because I hadn't ordered it on the app. When I did order it, it never came. I know that some executive came up with this brainstorm but there is no incentive to go to Alamo if the distractions are happening throughout the movie. Its like you get one shot to order something and thats it. I will be going to a different movie place that provides actual service in the future. read more

It's so cool to be able to see movies at this iconic theatre. The best part is seeing George Romero hanging in a hallway of Room 237 Doors. Pittsburgh represent! The seats are so comfy. Service is efficient and friendly. Food and drinks brought to seats are always accurate with order placed and yummy. The food and bev prices are pretty decent compared to what you'd pay for just popcorn and junk snacks elsewhere. Alamo has gone to shit. We have had a season pass for about a decade but cancelled it this week. In general, the new all-online food service is a disaster. We have had trouble with the app the last couple months, but this last weekend was the final straw. I used the infernal app like I was instructed. When my food and drink did not come after an hour I went looking for a human server. No servers. I went to the cashier at the front and she said there were only a few servers and they are scattered about all the theaters. When I asked how I was supposed to get my food she directed me back to the infernal app to make a complaint. I finally got my order during the final third of the film. I have cancelled my season pass and we have determined to never go there again. It makes me very sad. Each theater has been fully upgraded to comfortable seats with individual tables. They still show the majority of the films in limited release, so if your heart is set on something like that, this is the place you'll find it. They frequently have something unique from a studio promoting a film on display as well. This is a great theater to make an afternoon/evening in south Austin. Grab a meal and a movie! Pop into The Highball next door for drinks. It doesn't matter where you live in central Texas, you can plan plenty to do in the area around your movie time. Come to this Alamo! read more

If you're a movie buff, then you need to see a movie at this theater! This was my first time visiting this location. I did not realize it was recently renovated. There are so many photo ops in the hall and the entry is literally out of "The Shining." Say hi to a projection of the twins on your way in. We came on a Tuesday not realizing that all movies are $7 for BFD (Big F'n Deal) Tuesdays. Apparently there's no limit on how many movies you can watch. If you're on a budget, take advantage of this offer. The theater is connected to a parking garage and it's free. There are two additional parking garages in the shopping complex if you can't find parking in the main garage. This location is connected to a bar called The Highball. We didn't go in, but it looked fun. Our server was Tim and he was really nice. He explained the updates that they've made. The huge differences are the leather recliners that are clearly numbered, individual tables with cupholders that swivel in front of the seat (so glad they got rid of the long tables), and the call button to page the server. Each table has a light under it so you can see the menu and you still write down your order on a slip of paper located under your table. We shared a bowl of Bottomless Popcorn. It was plenty and we didn't need a refill. I also had a Raspberry Bramble and it was really good. Before the movie started, they announced that 18% gratuity is added automatically so you do not have to tip unless you want to. I've always been a fan of Alamo Drafthouse because it's quintessential Austin. Get there early for unique and interesting previews. They still offer cool activities like the Sing-a-longs, Brunch Screenings, and Master Pancake (a live version of Mystery Science Theater 3000). It's been many years since I've attended those events, but I used to go all the time when I lived in Austin. It's something fun and different to do. I don't go to the movies too often, but after visiting Alamo South Lamar, it's making me want to go see more movies. Saw the Elvis movie and the whole experience was great because they were still using the old paper-and-pen, no cell phones policy at South Lamar, at least as of that weekend. Took my wife and father-in-law to see the same movie at Lakeline and the experience was aggravating and demoralizing thanks to the new phone-ordering-only policy (check the recent Lakeline Yelp reviews to see what a disaster that has been). Hoping that maybe the powers that be are holding off instituting this at South Lamar at least, because it's my favorite theater in Austin and I don't want to have to consider a future of having to drive out to Flix Brewhouse. read more

Love Alamo Drafthouse and this location didn't disappoint. Been here two times and both times were as expected. The parking can be a bit tricky just due to the number of peeps around so get there early. The garage on the same side as the theater seems to be a bit larger with a couple of levels. Each time the service has been great, the ease of ordering while the movie is going and at the end paying the check is seamless. They do a good job of keeping the theater clean and chairs in good repair. read more

The theatre that used to shame phone users now has the audience using their phones to order in the dark?? Then you see a timer on the menu telling you to hurry up or you will not get your food and drink. In order to use a gift card you have to add in a 14 number code and passcode, all in the dark, along with your credit card. Then they add in a 18% tip and if you don't close out fast enough they add another 5%. Bye bye to the Alamo, hello corporate Sony. What a shame. read more

There's something special about this place that the big chains just can't replicate. It has that classic cinema soul with modern-day comforts. The popcorn is hands-down the best in the city (actually tastes like real butter!), and the ticket prices are incredibly fair. It's been a minute since I last hit up Alamo Drafthouse, but what better reason to come back than for the new SNL Movie? Spoiler alert: the movie delivered, and so did the Drafthouse. It's great to see this Austin staple still doing its thing post-COVID! First off, let's talk about the vibe--it's as cool as ever. Friendly staff everywhere you turn, with lots of smiles and "hellos" before and after the movie. As you walk through the hallway to your theater, there are plenty of cool photo apps; be it an old school movie poster or snapping a quick photo in front of the few ops of The Shining. My server was a rockstar: super friendly and attentive without being all up in my space, which I totally appreciated. It made the whole experience smooth and chill. The milkshake machine was broken, so I was a bit bummed to not be able to enjoy my favorite Brandy Alexander milkshake - a definite must have each time I visit! I grabbed some Peanut M&M's and settled for my giant ice water. Now, let's talk tech. Drafthouse, I love ya, but can we get tap pay going soon? I get the whole keeping-it-classic vibe, but tap pay is just so convenient these days. Let's bring it into the 21st century, y'all! All in all, great time, great staff, and great movie. Great place to be catch a movie and food! The food here is better than most dine in movie theatres and I love each location had their own theme layout and decor. Parking is an easy garage parking - tight turns though. Service was nice, but it was so uncomfortably hot in the theatre. 18% gratuity included in the total of food and beverage purchases. read more

This was an incredible experience at the movies. They recently redesigned the facility. If you're a fan of Stanley Kubrick and/or "The Shining," you have to check it out.
