I reserved a car through Expedia with Alamo, only it wasn't Alamo. They sub-contact with a local rental car company Locauto that operates at the Milan Linate airport. When we picked up the car, the guy at the kiosk didn't bother pointing out the existing damage to the car - we had to ask about it. But lo and behold, four days after returning the car (we checked it in afterhours), we get a surprise $500 bill via email for "damages" including a $80 penalty. No explanation, no photos, nothing. After multiple requests, they finally sent us photos which were close-up pics of small scratches that we have no way to dispute. We took photos at dropoff but not extreme close-ups of every square inch of the vehicle. Funny how meticulous they were after the fact. Seems like charging American tourists is a profit center for them as we have zero recourse now we're home.
