Dr Ruttenberg ruined my life. He prescribed a medication that I later found out he was giving out like candy, and I didn't even need it. It caused aseptic meningitis which destroyed my quality of life and left me with brain damage. I lost everything because of what this medication did to me. Earlier this year I found out he lost his practice and his license because he was doing the same thing to others. The staff at this office are THE BEST I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. The two receptionists are exactly who you want welcoming individuals, talking through their coverage options, and any insurance hurdles they might face (which is inevitable with healthcare!) If/when this office transfers ownership, I hope they can keep these diligent and meticulous women around. Finding good mental health help is difficult, but finding such compassionate, scrupulous, and knowledgeable individuals who are willing to work with you on everything surrounding healthcare is somehow more impossible. This psychiatrist did more for me than insurance and copays could explain. After 5 (FIVE!) antidepressant trials over the years, battling the stigmas of "it's all in my head" or "man up!" he was willing to start me on a medicine that came with serious risks, but allowed me to live a normal... happy life! It was a long road of shame and confusion before I found a psychiatrist that was not afraid to use his full arsenal of medications. Yes. He is blunt and to the point. He has many clients. He is not a therapist. And yes, his staff is very busy so try not to not take it personal when they have a distraction or "tone" people seem to complain about. In fact, the receptionists are some of the most helpful, hardest workers I've seen in any medical office setting. Dr Ruttenberg is the best psychiatrist I have seen. I saw Dr. Ruttenberg yesterday after my last psychiatrist pretty much told me she didn't know how to help me. I suffer with Debilitating depression and severe anxiety. I was a patient of Dr Ruttenberg many years ago, then just went to my primary physician for my medication. After my psychiatrist pretty much gave up on me that's when I decided to see Dr. Ruttenberg again. He was very warm and easy to talk to. Very soft spoken and kind. He assured me that we would find the right medication to make me well again. I will definitely not be going back to my old psychiatrist and will stick with Dr. Ruttenberg from now on. read more

Carmen the office manager is one of the dumbest people I've ever spoken to in my life. She basically stated that there's nothing special about Dr.Ruttenberg & to go to another DR due to his busy schedule. I'm sitting here in disbelief on how someone can be a receptionist at a psychiatrist office & not understand the importance of picking the right psychiatrist. Sweetie this is not Mc Donald's this is my mental health. She was extremely rude & ignorant. Bad for business! Quite possibly the worst staff with whom I have ever come into contact. Dr Ruttenberg himself is the only reason I am not giving the office 1 star. He is a fine doctor with a kind and gentle approach. He is knowledgeable and experienced. His staff, however, consist of two of the rudest, most abrasive, and most demeaning women I have ever encountered. They do not listen to their patients; they are constantly impatient, with no respect for people or their conditions. I have no ill will towards this doctor or any hidden agenda for writing this. I chose to leave because of his receptionists; there is no reason for me to intentionally bash his staff. I only stayed for three years because of Dr Ruttenberg. Finally, one day, I decided I had had enough of Carmen and her companion. I do not understand how they are still working for him. I see other similar comments on here. I only hope he reads these comments and rethinks his hiring choices. I doubt he will, but I want to warn anyone who thinks of seeing him that he/she will have to face the wrath of his receptionists. If you believe you can deal with it, then by all means choose Dr Ruttenberg, as he is an easy, kind, straight forward, and to-the-point doctor. read more

The Doctor is caring and seems like an excellent person. That's the ONLY reason for the 3 stars. However, like many other reviewers have said, one just can't get past the rudeness and condescending attitude of his secretary Carmen. If we didn't have to interact with her, I would love to stay. She feeds him BS and the poor doctor buys it! She is the Gestapo incarnate !!!!! She bullies you, LIES , rude, condescending, I have NEVER ran across such a VILE woman in my life! She tells the doctor her own version of the story which is way different from what took place on the phone. He is in COMPLETE denial about Carmen ... I was told over 2ms ago after I canceled an appointment, that she would not make me another appointment. Today I received a telephone call from the Dr. wondering why I didn't keep my appointment. Well, it's Carmen's fault! She NEVER made an appointment for me. Or notify me she had. It was for 9AM on a Monday, I would have never taken an appointment for a Monday morning. He said we could have a phone consult, which we did. The doctor is so nice and knowledgeable. He prescribed me a new medication, after taking a history of my previous meds and level of depression. It was not called into the pharmacy, so I called his office. Carmen told me that he will not fill it until my next appointment a month away. I asked her if she had spoken to the Doctor, since he wanted me on the meds. ASAP. She said she didn't have to speak with him, she knew what to do. This wonderful Dr. is in complete denial about CARMEN! He called me and this time he was onboard with Carmen's rules. So disappointed. I would love to see him as a doctor but I just can't get pass the complete insanity of abuse by Carmen. read more

I've really warmed to Dr. R, and I'm glad I came back to him after many years. So far no one has compared. He is very straight and concise in demeanor. Not very warm, but I think that's how it's supposed to be in his line of practice. He's been the first to get my diagnosis under control in over a decade. And Im sad I wasted so much time bouncing around, because he nailed it and it changed my life. I can always call for a telemed to make minor adjustments that improve my well-being greatly. His staff is absolutely lovely, though I admit it has not always been that way. These days that whole crew is efficient and pleasant. Dr. Ruttenberg is a gentleman who does listen to your problems that you are experiencing such as anxiety, social anxiety, panic attacks, ADHD and whatever your concern might be he'll make sure it is addressed properly and to make sure it's taken care of. Dr. Ruttenberg is not going to therapize your problems away. He sticks to the M.D. side of his profession. If you need therapy, talk counseling, or cognitive help (most of us do) seek a therapist of whatever credentials you prefer. Dr. Ruttenberg will listen to your behavioral health symptoms and medicate if and where he feels is appropriate and after you inform him will or will not help. As with most kinds of medicine, you've got to be accountable for your own welfare. Doctors never have all of the answers. Mental health is dynamic. I'm all too aware that mental illness can gravely impair one's ability to defend one's well being, but there are many types of mental health professionals for many different needs. Dr. Ruttenberg is fantastic for those of us who know what works, or doesn't work, and are simply needing somebody to listen to our experiences with medication and prescribe (or not) based on what he is told. He responds well to assertiveness. He does speak slowly in a somewhat singsong voice, but it's is very likely from years of dealing with persons who have to listen to him while trying to filter out their interior stirrings. After several years of being a patient in this office, I will admit that his staff is definitely cranky and at times, downright nasty in their treatment of the mentally ill. I know what it's like to deal with a clientele that taxes one's kindness but repeated occasions of hearing them speaking to obviously impaired patients in tones that I wouldn't use on a pervy gas station accoster has left me leaving the office with a conflicted heart. read more

One of our children is served by Dr. Ruttenberg. I'm not sure that he knows how important his choice of customer-facing staff is to his patients. I can tell you, as a parent, that it has has a huge impact on my impression of his practice. I have never in my life endured the type of verbal abuse that I was given yesterday, by a woman half my age, no less. When you deal with the front office for this provider, be very careful how you choose your words, you may become her target too. My mistake was getting the name of a medication wrong when I dropped by to pick up samples for our child. Rather than look up my daughters records and/or talk to the Dr to verify, she chose to be sarcastic, abusive and vitriolic. Sarcastic from her very first words, she began by dressing me down about controlled substances and how they are distributed. I actually had to call my wife to get the correct medication name, as the receptionist didn't take any initiative to look it up herself. She was relentless. Even after I received the correct meds that I had come for, she couldn't manage to restrain herself. Incredibly, the last thing I heard her yell echoed in the halls after I walked out the door... "things aren't going to go well for you in the real world". In the "real world", I am a 30-year veteran of consumer marketing, and I can tell you, your customer-facing staff are in fact, the lifeline of your business and at minimum, they MUST treat your customers with dignity and respect. I hope to meet this provider face-to-face in the near future, though can't even contact him without dealing with her. If his receptionist is no longer there, apologizes, or at the least I become convinced that she is not representative of his practice, I will gladly change my Yelp rating immediately. read more

Sorry, but I've only been to this office TWICE and EACH time, the front desk receptionist has had attitude with me, a patient. The first time was my intake appointment and this last time on the phone. The intake appointment obviously has paperwork that needs to be filled out, which takes time, but i work until 5pm and have an hour commute, so scheduling me for a 6pm appointment was risky. I told her I could try to make it, but that I'd have to fill out the paperwork afterward. When I arrived, she copped attitude with me, and bolted, saying that I had to fill out paperwork and was clearly irritated that I held her up. The last time over the phone, I asked her why she'd denied my prescription refills when Dr. Ruttenberg had *just* told me I could call them in. She heard what I guess was a projected tone in my voice, and asked me why I was upset - I told her that I was being denied medication that I needed to feel balanced and she still said it was too early. Uhm... I take Xanax as needed - it's not "too early"when you can't predict panic attacks. I'm finding another doctor - you can't treat patients like this, and Dr. Ruttenberg needs to find other staff if he wants to keep patients. read more

I was getting the runaround with other psychologists and psychiatrists (one literally had me playing with blocks like I was a child) and my therapist referred me to Dr. Ruttenberg- based on the recommendation of a colleague. The receptionist, Carmen, was super friendly and helpful on the phone and in-person, and Dr. Ruttenberg was calm, kind, and direct- exactly what you want in a psychiatrist. Dr. Ruttenberg's office charges 50 dollars UPFRONT BEFORE YOU EVEN SEE HIM JUST TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT. I have been told numerous times by my insurance that this is ILLEGAL, they claim it's "just office policy" ... The Doctor arrived 15 minutes late and his secretary was 30 minutes late, causing me to wait and have to fill out forms after my horrible 10 minute evaluation by Dr. Ruttenberg Dr. Ruttenberg constantly cut me off, and had an overall rushed, brief, and rude attitude toward me. His explanations about serious inquiries would usually be very ambiguous and vague. At the pinnacle of the experience, he tried to force me to take some anti-depressant that I had never heard of and was NOT COMFORTABLE at all taking. He then went on to say if I denied the medication he could not help me any further and would not work with me any other way. In short, THIS DOCTOR IS A SHILL FOR ANTI-DEPRESSANTS, if you need actual help for a psychiatric condition, stay as FAR away from DR. ALAN S RUTTENBERG as POSSIBLE! read more

Dr. Ruttenberg in my opinion does a fine job. He listens carefully to your symptoms and takes a lot of notes, asks a lot of questions, and based on that he prescribes medications. He is not there to provide therapy and listen to our childhood issues and hug us, that's not really his job. His staff is effective, and in my experience always accommodating. Staff sucks! Save your time & avoid the hassle from coming here. Conversation earlier this morning [6-1] with I believe to be Carmen: The Doctor wrote me 3 prescriptions in advance all for a lower dose taking them couple times a day. And I didn't want that. I wanted something higher and to only be taking them once a day or even go back to my 30mg dose. So I tossed them. And I told her that. She goes "oh you just threw them out like nothing? Like they're trash? Would you do that to your own clothes your own stuff?" Going on and on as to why I should have never lost my prescription. That it is now my own fault that I'm without my medicine. & Bc it's not a medicine that doesn't support blood pressure that it's less important. She's like: "you can't get another prescription until August" bc that's when my next appointment was. She says "you won't get anything bc you threw them away like trash." I said well I'm not from California. I'm from Texas and I've never had this problem with any medications. If I lost something or wanted a new medicine I would just go in their and get a prescription: hassle free. I said why would I keep taking a medicine that wasn't helping me? Why would I think to hold onto a prescription for 3/4 months that wasn't doing anything for me? She's like so you tossed it out? No. You keep it and all this rude shit. I just told her to cancel my appt in August before I get charged 150$ for not showing up. This all blows my mind bc a couple months ago I called and got a prescription over the phone. Walked in their picked it up. Left. Then went to refill it. Now this bullshit. Moral of the story is: regardless if I am wrong or right. I am a client contributing to you. You shouldn't treat me like scum. Nor make my visits harder then they ever should be. Simply try & solve this solution. You know...the only job you gotta do. Clients/customers are always first. Dr. Ruttenberg is a great Doctor. He briefly listens to what is wrong, makes his assessment and follows up with the patient. I would give him 5 stars if this review was based solely upon him. He cares about his patients; which is why I don't understand why he allows Carmen to continue to work for him. She is rude and insulting to patients. There are some staff in the office who are very kind, but she is not one of them. I am actually considering finding a different Doctor because I cannot stand the way she speaks to patients. There have been times when she is nice and actually does her job in a professional manner and then there are other times when she is just plain unprofessional to patients and crosses the line. I am so grateful to have found Dr. Ruttenberg. After years of being misdiagnosed with only depression and being medicated for it, I wondered why I was still struggling so much. The first time I saw Dr Ruttenberg, he asked me all the right questions and was kind and understanding and diagnosed me accurately.
