I had my left side 2 wisdom teeth pulled yesterday. I went in nervous and the heart rate machine proved it as the nurses calmed me down. Everything went smooth and I have yet to feel any pain. Dr Shelhamer numbed me long enough throughout the day and they advise you to take pain meds before it wears out. I did just that. I highly recommend this office. The woman who answered the phone (Linda, I think) was so sweet and kind when I called. I was a nervous wreck when I called- worried about my sons jaw. From the first call until the final appt. we felt like family!!! We received his name through a friend referral and was not disappointed. Nancy in the office made sure we knew about appt times, paperwork, and MOST important that we could call with any question! We have the first appt to meet the doctor and he spoke very plainly to my 13 yr old who was having the surgery to make sure he was comfortable. My son was so calmed by this, that he was more than ready for surgery. The day of we arrived and my son was taken back and 45 mins later he was ready to go. No problems, the doctor even called that night to make sure all was well and he even spent a little time to answer some questions we had. Dr. Shelhamer just took out my daughter's wisdom teeth. They were impacted and trying to grow in and hurting her quite a bit. We had several referrals from our general dentist and I chose Dr. Shelhamer because of his proximity to our home and I am so glad that I did. I cannot recommend him and his staff more highly. Everything they did was kind, helpful, informative and caring. Dr. Shelhamer is the extremely well qualified, as evidenced by all of the name brand university diplomas on the wall, yet he took the time to explain everything to both my daughter and me. He doesn't have to take the time that he does or give his cell number if we have problems, but he does, and that is what makes him awesome, aside from his requisite skills. The whole procedure from beginning to end could not have gone better and that is what I expected after meeting with him at the first appointment. I expected things to go well but I feel sure that if things didn't go as planned, he would be ready and able to meet the challenge. My daughter felt safe and comfortable with him, which helped alleviate some of her anxiety about the procedure. His nurses were also really nice and they treated us kindly and gave very thorough information about what we needed to do and buy before and after the surgery. There was nothing left to chance and everything was explained clearly, but I never felt as though my time was being wasted with unnecessary items. His office is super convenient, right off of El Camino, near Bressi and its easy to get to. If you or anyone you know needs to have oral surgery, he's your man. read more

Dr. Shelhamer treated me a few years ago and just recently treated my husband for our wisdom teeth. We both had the best experience. Getting all 4 of your wisdom teeth taken out can be a little scary. Our experiences were so easy and comfortable. All of our questions were answered before we even have time to ask one. Dr. Shelhamer even takes the time to call you personally and check on you. 5 stars, great experience, great doctor who really cares and makes you feel at ease. Twenty years ago I had a bad experience with the extraction of my #14 tooth. Soon after the extraction, I had hypothermia and was sent to hospital emergency. My blood pressure dropped to 80/40 due to vessel dilation, almost fatal. This time I was diagnosed to extract #15 and I was very concerned that things will happen again. By searching all the oral surgeons in my insurance network in San Diego North County, I was impressed with Dr. Alan Shelhamer from his website. In a pre-surgery consultation, he patiently explained the procedure and demonstrated the monitoring equipment in his office facilities, including oxygen, nitrous oxide, EKG, body temperature, blood pressure, etc. He prescribed an antibiotic for preventing infection. Dr. Shelhamer is very friendly and confident in his profession. During the extraction procedure, he frequently informed me that it was coming fine. I even did not feel that the tooth was extracted. There was very little bleeding and no swollen. I started to eat normal food the next day. I also like his new morden office ficilities and computerized preregistration that you can prepare the form at home before coming in. His front office staff and technical staff are very friendly and knowledgeable. I highly recommend that you visit Dr. Alan Shelhamer if you need to find an oral surgeon. George H. I was referred to dr. Shellhammer by Dr. Hulse. I am extremely thankful for that recommendation. Dr. Shellhammer and his entire staff are fantastic. I had to have two dental implants done. Dr. Shellhammer put me at ease, was able to have the procedure with no complications and very little discomfort. Dr. Shellhammer is thorough with his work and covers every detail. I have a fear of dentist let alone an oral surgeon. From the minute you walk in the office,calming music,ocean waves on the flatscreen and a friendly person at the front desk...the staff immediately put me to ease. Then you meet the doctor and you realize why the staff is so great. They really like working for him. Dr. Shelhamer was great. Friendly, he explained everything in detail looked at options put me to ease. Can it be a doctor that actually cares about the patient? His vibe and the office vibe melt away the fear. I had an extraction cracked tooth I made it through with NO PAIN MEDS..I had no swelling a little redness on my cheek the day after. This is the difference between a good doctor and a medicore one. He looked at the best way to extract with causing minimal trauma. I have a follow up next week that would normally give me anxiety...no anxiety here. Dr. Shelhamer is amazing! He removed 5 of my son's baby teeth many years ago and removed my wisdom teeth a few weeks ago. The front desk staff were wonderful and Dr. Shelhamer was fabulous! I thought long and hard about leaving this review but feel I should let people know about this man. My husband went in for routine wisdom teeth removal. They weren't bothering him other than our usual dentist recommended the procedure to prevent future issues. Dr shelhamer performed the surgery and my husband was left with severe nerve damage and has no feeling in his lower lip. It's been 2 years and we tried acupuncture and various other things. Dr shelhamer did nothing to offer support or compensation in terms of paying for laser therapy. While there are always risks, this is more a comment re the way it was handled. My suggestion would be to avoid this guy if you can. Reviews are good if nothing goes wrong but ask about his policy if things do happen. Terrible!! Choose somewhere else. read more

This has to be the absolute WORST customer service and client care I have ever experienced! Leslie in the office is a MONSTER. I have no idea how she is allowed to do any job dealing with people. I scheduled my daughters wisdom teeth to be removed and the day before surgery, which was already scheduled late morning. Leslie calls to tell me her surgery had been moved back by 2 hours. So now my daughter can't eat until 1pm, and then she won't be able to eat for several hours after oral surgery. But honestly, we probably could have dealt with that it was the awful way we were treated. When they called to move her appointment back, in the rest tonality possible, they told me that the office aids weren't going to be there? How about you reschedule your office aid to be there when your patient is? Novel Idea! This treatment was not just on this phone call. Every. Time. Dr. Shelhamer is nice, but 90% of the time you are dealing with the horrible front desk minions. We had already paid several hundred dollars for the initial consult, and I chose to go to another dentist and pay the fee again just so I wouldn't have to deal with these front desk workers. read more

I visited Dr. Shelhamer on numerous occassions to have a tooth removed and a screw/post implanted for a false tooth. He was very patient with my many questions and thoroughly explained all procedures and risks. Dr Herford and Dr Jacob's was outstanding on my visit today. The office staff was so friendly and all looked like they enjoyed working with each other. Dr Herford explained everything very simply and gave me different options for my problem. I loved having the residents helping with him and answering questions for me also. After a bmx bike accident sent my son to the emergency room, I made an appointment with Dr. Shelhamer to follow up on my son's fractured cheekbone. Dr. Shelhamer was extremely knowledgeable and took the time to explain everything to us. During the consultation, he thoroughly examined my son and even took an additional xray at no extra charge.
