His consultation was so incredibly precise and explanatory that it made my prior consultation seem very inept and rushed. I truly appreciated his opinion on whether the implants were really needed in my case or not. I'm used to dentists pressuring me to spend money but he didn't. First let me say this. This place is all about customer service. They don't sell you stuff that you don't need and put the decision in the customer's hands. What I like is how clean this place is and the technology they use. I have never seen or heard of 3D scanning to clean teeth or do surgery. I had deep cleaning and it was true deep cleaning. I also had dental implant and I am pleased with the results. From the front front desk to the hygienist, this place is worth the 45 minute drive on I-5. This place is all about quality of service. Believe me, I wouldn't be taking time off to get dental service, if I didn't like it. Another note, they don't give you exotic pain killers or unnecessary numbing solution like other places. I was referred to Dr Chun by a friend I surf with in Encinitas. I needed an implant to replace an old root canal that had failed. After checking around with half a dozen different specialists in north county he seemed to have the best price and would work with my Delta Insurance. The office is new and outfitted with state-of-the-art equipment. The staff are friendly, pleasant, and good at their jobs. Best ever! My dentist referred me to other implant specialists considered the "best" for handling my molar implant after I needed it extracted. They were either $1000+ more than Dr Chun, or charged $95 just for a consultation, followed by the "pressure" to proceed right away with bone grafts and then the implant process. I found Dr. Chun by accident in a small strip mall in Oceanside. Immediately, I was taken aback by how clean and hi-tech the office was. The staff exuded professionalism to the highest degree, coupled with a proficient knowledge of the state-of-the-art equipment in 3D. I searched and searched for affordable implant dentistry. i live in San Diego but settled on m aking the trip to Oceanside and Dr. Chun. The office is tucked into a little strip mall. I was very impressed with the service I have received so far. (I have had the implant and I am being fitted for the crown Tuesday) Everything was explained to me, and almost painless. I am giving my son a new tooth for Christmas! He goes in for the initial post implant on Tuesday (6 days from now). His previous general dentist cautioned him to be sure he had a qualified Maxillary/facial surgeon to do the procedure. We have been researching (six alternate consultations) to get him the right advanced, low pain, affordable tooth implant since he was 16. He is now 34 and still wearing the removable flipper/spacer prosthetic the Orthodontist gave him way back then. This is a before comment, prior to the actual... implant procedure. I must preface that James hates going to the dentist, hates pain, is scared out of his wits that he won't tolerate the procedure well or that something may go wrong. I came to this dentist because of the great reviews on Yelp. The office was very kind to me, but unfortunately the main Dr. provided incorrect information of care needed. Long story short I had a root canal done years ago and the tooth was bothering (so I thought) he advised me that I had a big infection, that I needed to do an implant and also proceed with gum surgery because I had bone loss and the implant wouldn't hold. I was so frightened and especially concerned about the costs. Well, I visited 2 other dentists and one of them being an endodonist specialist. Well both advised me there was no infection!! The tooth was actually just fine and there was NO need for an implant. Come to find out I was grinding my teeth at night and just need a night guard! So if I were to proceed with Smilewave I would have paid $1000's of dollars not needed. It makes me feel they just wanted my money and in our economy right now everyones money is tight and valuable. Based on what the website indicated, I anticipated a price of under three thousand dollars. The appointment was very pleasant. I even received a "gift" which include a new toothbrush. The quote came to $4400. I am currently in the process of getting an implant/crown for half that right in San Diego County. It was more than 10 years ago that I started having increasing dental issues. So I began the search to find a reasonably priced and highly competent dental experience provided by a dentist that instilled trust and confidence, and made it a relatively painless and comfortable procedure! However, it was my lucky day when, after investigating dental practices and offices in and around not only San Diego, but Tijuana, as well, that I came upon this highly competent and experienced implantologist, Dr Chun and his friendly, professional and amazing team in Oceanside, CA. Throughout 10 years of 5 implantations, laser treatment and teeth cleanings with Smilewave, they have treated me like family when I arrive for treatment. When I was recently in need of dental attention and preparing for a motor home trip from my home in Bend OR to Phoenix AZ, I scheduled Dr Chun into my trip. Dr Chun found an impaired crown abutment and while I paid for the crown ordered from a local lab, he would not charge me for his services; nor did he charge me for a second laser treatment on a molar needing that attention. My dental experience has been nothing short of unsuspectingly incredible in all that time with them and I would be hard pressed to ever consider going anywhere other than Smilewave! And, those of us "in the know" from our experience with Dr. Chun, can tell when one's work is a matter of the heart! I had an endodontist mess up a root canal. He said it must be pulled and I would need a bridge or maybe an implant. Dr. Chun had done a wonderful implant several years ago so I went for a referral. He looked at the x ray and said not to give up on that tooth just yet. I can only attest to my experience getting an estimate & treatment plan. I liked the Dr. and he seemed thorough in his explanations. The office and examining room appeared spotless. However, his "lower costs" are non-existent as he starts finding all kinds of add'l items that needs to be done which double and more the basic implant charges. Following him, 3 other specialists totally disagreed with his assessment of all the extras he claimed I needed. In addition, I wrote to SIX of his former patients that wrote reviews here (out of 18-20 reviews at the time). NOT ONE returned my message or replied. When I've done this before, I have easily rec'd back an avg. of 60-75% or more replies from other reviewers. That really makes me question who these reviewers are! I also didn't like his advertisement book in the front waiting room for the specific brand of veneers he offers - I think it was Lumineers. If you read throughout the book, it constantly emphasizes over and over again and prominently how "normal" veneers are PAINFUL, PAINFUL !!! but not Lumineers. I've done regular veneers and they are NOT painful whatsoever - the over-emphasis of extreme pain one would endure with traditional veneers as opposed to Lumineers that this Dr. offers is ludicrous and would frighten anyone into assuming ONLY Lumineers are not painful to apply - that's garbage! I went in for a free consultation on the molar which had a failing root canal. They took panoramic x-rays and then Dr. Chun spent time explaining the problems and the treatment. This was the first time ever in a dentist's office I felt the dentist cared for my well-being instead of upselling unnecessary procedures, not to mention all the cutting edge diagnostic software such as 3D simulations of the entire mouth. I ended up having the tooth extracted and a bone graft done for the future implant. Compared to the $300 I had to pay out of my pocket just to have a consultation and panoramic x-rays done before the previous oral surgeon even touched my wisdom teeth at Mission Valley Oral Maxillofacial Surgery, Dr. Chun's dentistry truly demonstrated high level of medical ethics. I went to Smilewave to see Dr. Chun for some extensive dental work (4 crowns and an implant), after referral from a colleague who had implant work done there. Initially, My wife and I had gone to see an endodonist specialist in San Diego for two estimates. My wife (who needed two implants and crown work) got an estimate for $26 K. I received an estimate (crown work and 1 implant) for $24 K. Needless to say, I was staggered by both estimates from that specialist, what a rip-off! . When I visited Smilewave in Vista, I was immediately impressed with the professional and friendly staff, as well as the excellent state-of-the-art dental equipment used for precise placement of the dental inserts. Dr Chun gave me a reasonable estimate for my dental work (under $7 K). Dr Chun does excellent crown work, one of the best I've ever seen. My crowns were perfect! My dental implant was precisely placed and I was able to use that side of the mouth to chew that same evening. I had no complications, everything went perfectly and the best part - my wallet didn't hurt. I was so impressed I brought my wife to Smilewave for her major dental work. She received a very reasonable estimate (under $9 K) and her 2 implants were also precisely placed. She had no complications and was using her new implants to chew meat the very next day. Back in 2011 I called this Smilewave. I was quoted a price over the phone and would be given a 10% discount if I paid cash/check. I did call a number of implant dentists and only this office would give me a price. I made an appointment and all went well as quoted. A loose tooth was pulled and bone graft was done with implant done. The price was like $1550 or so. No problems. In Feb of 2019 I called about price and would be given a 10% discount if paid cash/check. Made my appointment for a price of around $1785 and was told the price would be more due to extraction and using my own DNA for bone graft. I said fine as I wanted the loose tooth pulled. I wrote the check for $2739.90. Came back in 4 months later to start the implant. I asked Joon Chun, DDC why the difference in the increase in cost when first quoted vs what the check I wrote was. He then told me I did not need an implant due to the tooth being in back and a number 32. I thought it at was # 31. What do I know. Dr. Chun said he would send some refund to me. The refund check came out to $1606.40. Sounds like we got you now. Do your home work before you write a check. Not a happy camper. New: Dr. Chun called me about my review the next day and apologized. He said he would give me a larger refund and his reasoning was it was a busy day and he should have said an implant was not needed on the first trip in Feb. read more

When I needed a few teeth pulled and an dental implant, I went searching for a general dentist as well as surgeon. I was so fortunate to have found Dr. Joon Chun in Oceanside. This year, I decided to replace a very old bridge which entailed pulling 2 teeth and placing 2 dental implants with crowns. You know how nervous one can get prior to having this type of surgery. One week out of surgery, I am healing with no problems at all. It was a very difficult time for me since I just had experienced a great lost in my family. He was very professional, very patient and very honest. I had three cracked and rotten teeth that needed dental implants badly. The first tooth was implanted by my former dental surgeon and the cost was enormous. Consequently, for the remaining two teeth, the economic consideration became the number one priority. Smilewave Implant Dentistry's internet posted price was a mere half the cost of what I had paid for the first one so I was obviously skeptical at first but willing to check them out with a free consultation. I walked into the office and was greeted by a friendly and professional receptionist and then a knowledgeable technician who scanned and photographed my entire teeth with a cool 3D state of the art X-ray machine. In the operating room where my x-ray picture was already displayed on the screen, I was given a DVD implant tutorial which was brief but concise and actually entertaining as well. Promptly after the video tutorial, I met Dr. Joon who introduced himself in a warm, friendly and professional manner which made me very comfortable to talk as well as even joke with him. He calmly went over each view of the x-ray photos and ensured me that there would be no complication performing the implants. At this point, I was not only impressed by the state of the art Hi-tech equipment in the office but also by the remarkable professionalism of Dr. Joon and his staff. Subsequently, after feeling my initial skepticism and doubts about Dr. Joon had been extricated, I decided to have the implant done by Dr. Joon. The implant procedure took about an hour without any pain or discomfort and moreover what astounded me the most about the Dr. Joon's surgery was that even after all that drilling and screwing a metal anchor into the bone, there wasn't a single drop of blood anywhere in my mouth. I was even more amazed by the fact that there was no swelling or any sort of pain after the surgery and I didn't need to take any pain killer medication. About six months later, the abutment and crown were put on the implant and a minor adjustment on the crown was performed by Dr. Joon. From all my previous experiences with crowning teeth, I had expected at least one or two more visits to the office would be necessary for a proper adjustment of the crown but to my surprise the first adjustment was done so perfectly and precisely, no additional visit was ever needed. Face it, who would want a frequent visit to a dental office for anything unless you work there? I still have many more good things to say about Dr. Joon and SmileWave but to make a long story short, I will say this: what you will be getting from Dr. Joon is like getting Nordstrom-like top quality products and professional services at a Wal-Mart price. I was told twice at the desk that I could come in for a free 3D reassessment for some dental implants. I need 2 and possibly 4 implants that I now have funds to accomplish. I set up the appointment and came in after I confirmed the appointment ahead of time the day prior. I was required to give more than $2700 dollars up front for my dental procedure. After my insurance paid Dr. Chun and told me that my portion was less than the amount I had paid... it seem to take a wrong turn...I have not received my refund (months have passed) the office manager stalls on returning my refund or informing their accountant that I am due a certain amount.. after months the accountant sent a check in amount short more than $500..and it is unknown when this dental office will send the correct refund. I do not know if Dr. Chun is aware of how his office manager is handling this problem...after meeting with her and trying to take care of this problem more than 4 times I am still waiting for a resolution. read more
