I took the 6 hour tour which included a 2.5 hr train ride, panning for gold and sled dogs. What an amazing time w my mother who uses a rolling walker. As long as you can do a few steps you can do this tour. We had wild Jessie and he dresses the part. He's very knowledgeable about the history of Skagway. Since he lives in the town all year-round he gives great suggestions on places to eat and go. The sled dog demonstration was fun to watch. We got to meet the dogs and hold puppies. Plenty of dogs to go around. We then learned how to pan for gold. You get to keep it! They measure your gold and tell you what it's worth. Very fun. The water is warm so you don't freeze when panning for gold. read more

Our tour included the scenic White Pass Railway, Dredge Town gold panning experience, and slep dog experience. Klondike Mike was our tour guide and really made the railway experience over the top. Incredibly informative, personable, and fun tour guide. Enjoyed how he interacted with the group individuals, especially when he spoke engaging our 8 year old daughter when talking how these experiences will last a life time, the importance of memories, etc. Dredge Town gold panning was corny, but fun fun. The only downside was how the actors let you know multiple times before you ever start panning to expect miniscule amounts which really breaks the illusion of the gold rush and panning. The sled talk was great and the dogs were fun to watch. They dogs only ran one lap around the track, it would have been nice to see them go a bit more since there is not a lot of space to view them run the view is likely to be obstructed for many in the group. Lots of cuddle time with the puppies and a lot of interaction with the adult dogs. read more

Signed up for the Gold Fever - gold panning and sled dog experience through Princess cruises and was then told by guest services my 4 year old might be bored during this so we decided to cancel only to find out this company has a horrible cancellation policy and would not refund us!!! They said whoever they spoke to was rude and would not let us. No where in the ticket did it say cancellation policy. This place was incredible. First they talk you through how the Iditarod works and show you an old dog sled, and the current dog sled. They discussed the process of running the Iditarod and show you the way that they send supplies ahead so that they don't have to carry them all in the dog sled for the 1100 mile race. It is presented by one of two Iditarod mushers. Our presenter was very knowledgeable and she showed us many different parts of the race. After that, we got to go back and meet some of the sled dogs that had run the race. We were able to pet them and they were very friendly and came up and like the attention. They then hook them up and allow them to show us how they Run the race with a sled behind them. A very cool experience. After that, they allowed us to pet some puppies that would soon be running the race and become sled dogs in their own right. A great experience, especially when you are away from your dog for a few days. It's really nice to have the opportunity to meet these sweet dogs learn about this Incredible race and also just enjoy yourself. read more

It was one of the hottest days and I have to say- remember to dress accordingly, ughh it was hot and there was a lot of walking and waiting and watching, with that in mind I think this place should build more seats. I noticed a lot of older folks taking this tour (Well it's a cruise and most older folks take the Alaskan cruise rather than head to the Bahamas or Mexico), they can't stand 3.5 hours. You only get to sit in the beginning, the bus ride and back to the dock. Learning and actually meeting an Iditarod musher was really interesting, the pups were the cutest but they were 9-12 months and wanted to nibble on everything! We stopped here on our Princes Cruise excursion after the White Pass railway. Overall we had a good experience we enjoyed the gold panning but did not love being held in the gift shop for 30 minutes waiting for lunch when everyone was starving. Signed up for the Gold Fever and Sled Dogs experience on my NCL cruise. Was expecting plenty of puppy play time and a true-ish gold panning experience, and was sorely disappointed. I question the accuracy of explaining the gold rush experience when I asked how a piece of machinery was powered and was then told, "Well, this piece of machinery was from the 1940s..." So it wasn't part of the actual gold rush? How is that historically accurate? The dog portion felt like they crammed as many people as possible into the area. For the 'talk portion' to learn about sledding, people were sitting on the floor and they kept squeezing more and more people in. Then to see the dogs, you basically stood outside a little 'running area' for the dogs and then at the end, passed around a couple of puppies. I was very uncomfortable when they got out puppies that were two weeks old and allowed hundreds of people to pet them. These dogs are way too young to be vaccinated. Then the puppies you actually got to hold were about six weeks old. You got maybe 30 seconds to hold one, and I worried that people would drop them. I don't know, I guess I expected being able to sit on the ground in a little fenced area with maybe about a dozen other people where the puppies could run around freely. Definitely didn't get that. Then for gold panning, they basically give you a pan already loaded with dirt and probably a pre-loaded amount of 'gold.' At the end they tell you how much your gold is worth - I asked if they would buy it back from me and they told me no. But they would make it into a necklace for me. How kind of them (yeah, insert sarcasm here). So yeah, not the experience I was looking for. read more

I think there are other dog sledding and goal mine history excursions you can enjoy in this area, but I am thrilled with my experience here. Our guide called herself Mother Lode and she was quite knowledgeable about the history and methods, problems and potentials of being a miner and the 1890s. Three young people introduced us to a kennel of sled dogs and talk about what it's involved in being a sweater and a competitive brace slept dog. We got to put puppies and adults. My favorite part, by far, was watching a demonstration as as the dogs pulled a sled and rider around a short gravel track it was amazing. read more

We started off the day on a scenic train ride with the most amazing tour guide (Lenny) aka Tumbleweed. We took the Gold Panning, Sled Dog Experience, and White Pass Railway. Our guide was Klondike Mike- he was so knowledgeable! Brilliant story teller! I really appreciated his dive into detail and his genuine interest and passion for the history of the area! Our group of three was myself, husband, and 11 year old son. From the pier, the tour starts with a bus ride to the Alaska 360 tour base, which is the gold panning and sled dog experience. You get a strange but thorough lesson in gold panning, and then experience it for yourself at the panning tables. (At the start of the lesson I was so turned off by the stage-acting and ridiculously cheesy jokes, that I wished I hadn't signed up for the excursion.) Everyone is given a bowl with pre-placed gold flakes amongst first and rocks. You follow the panning directions to find your gold at the bottom of the bowl. It was definitely fun for our kid! In the next experience you are led to the sled dog area where you meet an Iditarod musher and her sled dogs. She gives a nice in-depth talk on her personal experience and the skill it takes to run the race. She then leads you to a gated area to meet the sled dogs. She releases them in a dog run and you are allowed to pet them behind the waist high fence. Her assistants then hook up the dog team and do one lap around the small outdoor arena. It's fun to see the dogs so excited to work. Then it's time for the puppies! There are six puppies they bring out and pass around for the group to hold. Adorable, and everyone loves this part! The next experience is a ride to the train by bus. After boarding the train you begin the hour long ride up to White Pass, and the turn around in Canada! There is a very small individual sized snack of cheese, crackers, and cookies- handed out airplane style. And Klondike Mike gives you a taste of sparkling Apple Cider for a toast after reaching the summit. Probably the most enjoyable part of the experience for me was the train ride as we listened to the stories from Klondike Mike and enjoyed the amazing scenery! The ride back down is about an hour and you end the train ride at the pier. The things I didn't enjoy as much: *The stage-acting by tour employees. *Time spent waiting for the group to gather and be herded to the next experience. *The gold panning- it's more of a kid thing. Very nippy but beautiful animals. I was surprised how small they were but very strong. The gold panning wasn't my thing but the kids in the group found about 32 dollars worth of gold flake. They enjoyed it. The railroad was really great. Beautiful views. Our guide was Klondike Mike as I mentioned. He was, by far, the best tour guide I've ever had. Food sucks cold, dried out ribs, and undercooked chicken. All the food supposed to be hot was cold, they force you to sit at tables with others that are coughing and sneezing all day, try to isolate from them , the management won't let you. We ended up leaving. They escorted us to the benches out front where the busses are parked, couldn't bring any food or drink with us, though they had nothing worth eating. Long Shot Liz was amazing!!!! She had moxy and was a really nice tour guide, taking care to interact with us guests and personally talk to everyone. Liz even gave us sparkling cider on the train! She took care to involve the young children, and was very informative on the train. The gold tour was very goofy, so it may be best for little kids. Long Shot Liz was THE BEST!! The dog tour was amazing!! The man who explained how the race all worked in the first big room (the one that had the dog sled and racing suit) was so entertaining and informative!!! The dogs were adorable, and the woman who actually did the race was super cool! We did the train ride and ended up here to finish the tour. You go through a corridor of the past as you come outside and see all the left over machinery that they used to find gold hack in the day. All the staff are dressed in period costumes and have interesting names. As much as we tried to get them to break character, they didn't. Very cool bunch of thespians. After our tour guide was done, another guide gave a lesson in gold panning. The actual panning was more difficult than we thought but was fun! I was able to get $13 of gold and my husband $18. At the end, I got the gold put in a round glass medallion. This was a fun trip. Good for anyone over 10 years of age. Definitely a must when on a cruise to Alaska! read more

We had such an AMAZING time on this excursion!! I'm not sure if Karot Top was my favorite part, but he was close, lol. He was so funny and kept the kids entertained while I soaked in the beauty of Alaska on the train. He also shared so many stories of the town and its history. After the White Pass Railway, we loaded up on a bus and drove through town for a few highlights. Then it was off to mine for some gold. Nugget and Karot's playful banter had us cracking up as we learned all the ins and outs of panning for gold. EURIKA, we found gold!!! Off to the asayor to see what it's worth. While we didn't get enough gold to retire, the kids were blown away to learn how much those little flakes were worth. The next part was my youngest daughter's favorite part... the puppies!!! After learning what actually goes into caring for and training these dogs, it's surprising to hear that they have any time for themselves outside their dogs. It blew me away hearing the first-hand stories of an actual racer of the Iditarod, unreal!!! We thoroughly enjoyed loving on all the sled dogs and their puppies. Our final leg of the trip was spent learning more about the gold rush; the trip to stake your claim, how they mined for gold, and seeing an actual drudgery that was used for decades. The only negative I have for this company is that they do not respond to emails or calls. Let me explain. This excursion sold out FAST, and I really didn't want to miss out, so I was calling and emailing, trying to get a few more tickets. Thankfully, another family canceled, and we bought them, but it would've been nice to get any type of response from them. All that being said, this was by far the best excursion, and if you can only do one, this is it, but book it fast!!!! read more

This was a fun tour and from all of the available options for Skagway, the most adventuresome that wasn't "extreme". The gold mining part was o.k. Panning for gold and the tour of the dredge were interesting enough, while waiting in line to get gold weighed was cumbersome. From there, the real fun began: -Tasting their own brewed root beer and beer. -Lunch-salmon, bbq ribs, chicken, potato wedges, salad. Solid meal. -Visit to the ice room (40 below F) to simulate what the Iditarod racers experience. The highlight was the time spent with the Iditarod racers and dogs. The racers were informative and entertaining, while seeing the dogs in action was great. The 3 week old puppies was a nice touch as well. A well run tour that isn't heavy on physical exertion, but you get a good idea of the Klondike area's highlights. read more

Our adventure started with Longshot Liz! She was our tour guide, and entertained us with facts about Skagway on the way to Alaska 360. She is a seasonal employee like so many other guides we encountered while on the Princess Cruise. Upon arriving, we met Slim Pickens who instructed us in the fine art of panning for gold. He regaled us with stories of panning for gold, and then gave us a pan with which to try our own luck. Fortunately, both he and Longshot Liz provided assistance; and we had something to take to the assessor's office. We had a few minutes in the gift store before we were escorted to the area to learn about mushing and the Iditarod. I actually saw the start of the first race in 1973 while living in Anchorage so it was interesting to hear about Therese's experiences. She was quite informative in her presentation. She explained the essentials you need along the trail, how to control the sled when traversing a tree covered trail, explained the attire required to combat the freezing temperatures, and explained dog selection to get the perfect team in the right order for the run. Her husband, Peter, has also raced in the Iditarod; but unfortunately was not present. I heard from follow passengers who attended a later tour that he was there. Her lead dog, Bella, was introduced to the group; and graciously accepted treats from some. After wards, we headed to the kennels where several dogs were released for us to meet and pet. As soon as they realized it was time to be hitched up to the sled, they were all singing in anticipation! Once they were ready, the gate was opened, and they were off! Quick demonstration around a small track, and then the puppies ;). We got to hold puppies which were only 2.5 weeks old - not even named yet. We learned that they are named in theme in order to know to which littler they belong. Not sure what theme they'll go with since mom is Chloe . . . . Then we were returned to Longshot Liz who toured the facility, and talked about some of the apparatus used in mining.
