May 16, 2025 Carnival Cruise excursion- Bike, hike and raft. About 11 miles total. The staff guides are incredibly knowledgeable with the history and they take pride in sharing it with guests. We biked with Gabriella, Abby and Colin. We also encountered Danny and Rachel for the hike and river float; thank you both so much for the enthusiasm and guidance through Saint's trail. Just an amazing raft tour if you are ever in Skagway. It's like taking one giant lazy river ride for two hours with a tour guide in a rubber raft. If you're looking for a relaxing excursion to see the sights of Alaskan flora and fauna this is a terrific choice. We had a perfectly sunny day for our river ride down the Taiya River. Our tour guide was so much fun, gave us a lot of insight and history of the river, pointed out things to see, and answer any questions we had. He knew his stuff, and made our ride enjoyable. They gave us waterproof boots to wear, life jackets, and went over the details of the ride. Afterwards, there were drinks and snacks available. We did get to see bald eagles and harbor seals along the way. No bears though on this trip. Good thing as I didn't want to become a bear's lunch. read more

If you cannot walk the Chilkhoot 2mile trail (a beautiful hike with possible bear and eagle sightings) which does have a lot of steep, rooty, muddy steps, you can ask Skagway Float Tours for the flatter Nature walk instead. The Chilkhoot Trail and the Nature walk end up at the same place where you float gently down the river. No, you don't paddle at all. The guide paddles to guide the boat because it is a very gentle float down the river. They provide some small snacks at the end of the float tour. If you buy directly through Skagway Float Tours (which is the exact same as the ship excursion), you will be supporting Alaskan locals directly AND saving yourself some money! Excellent, Excellent, Excellent. If you are a nature person this is it for you. We biked, hiked and floated down river. Sophia was absolutely well versed on the history while biking, very accommodating, patient and of course friendly. Sam, was our guide on the hike and float down river. We loved him and if you are especially interested in the plant life he is exceptionally versed in this area and pointed out seasonal flowers, herbs and mushrooms. If you go through the cruise company you do pay more money than going locally. Locally you do support these people directly, however, if you book through the cruise company they will not leave port if you are late (reasonably) and booked through them. But you pay $$$$ If you book locally you run the risk of the tours being fully booked and not available unless you very well planned ahead. Choose what is more important to you and enjoy it either way. read more

We booked this shore excursion via Viator, opting out from the cruise line. It was less expensive and offered more time choices. Viator also offered a guarantee to be back on the ship. Seeing how small Skagway is, it was hard to be late. The confirmation asked to meet near the the ship, but with a call to their office they were willing to pick us up in town. The tour provided just what it advertised and more -- a drive to Dyea, a moderate hike through the Chilkoot Trail and a relaxing float trip down a river. The weather was ideal as well. Before setting off for the hike, they had walking sticks and water for us. They took us on the first stretch, one that was mildly steep and uneven and checked to see if it was manageable. If you take this tour be sure to wear good shoes or hiking shoes. If it is rainy, the trail will likely be muddy and slippery. I think our guide Nate made the trip. During the hike he was a wealth of information about the plant life of the area. What can be eaten, what should not. He pointed things out that a novice would not bother to notice. We found some bear scat, and he talked about what likely was in the bear's recent meal. With his background, he could survive weeks in the forest. He always made sure that everyone was safe and assured the worry wart me that I did not touch anything poisonous when I landed in moss to break a fall. During the float portion we were outfitted with boots and life vests. Nate who had experience with rapid river rescue offered a thorough safety lesson. The ride down was peaceful. We saw a seal and an eagle's nest. You couldn't count on animal sightings, but the views were amazing. During the ride down, Nate pointed out the names of the mountains, the West Creek glacier and even the different water sources. It helped you appreciate your view even more. Skagway is a historical town. This hike was part of its history. Be sure to get outside the main drag. With Skagway Float Tours you can't go wrong. read more

Took the hike & float tour led by Becca today and it was absolutely breathtaking! The hike takes you through a rain forest and is easy for all ages, about 2 miles. Then floated down the river with spectacular views of glaciers, mountains, and wildlife. Becca gave a great lesson about the history of Skagway while also teaching us what plants were surrounding us during the hike! Had an amazing time on their excursion. Ryan was a highly knowledgeable guide and was absolutely fun to be around. The float trip was absolutely scenic and amazing. Really enjoyed the hike as well. I would put the hike at a easy/medium difficulty. It isn't suitable for young kids or the elderly due to the jagged rocks, but for someone of average ability should be just fine. I will definitely book a hike with Skagway Float tours again. Also, bonus, they have a super sick vintage van they bring you to the hike in which was awesome. read more

Our afternoon was spent floating down the Tiala River. We chose the Skagway Float Tours. Our guides were Andy, Aaron and Nate. Our afternoon was fabulous. They are delightful ambassadors of their business and of this region. They are well informed, experienced and humorous. They immediately secure you with a sense of trust that they know what they are doing, they take this very seriously and are committed genuinely to you having a great experience. Andy had the pleasure of rowing and guiding our floating raft down the Tiala River. He shared great stories about the environment, about the people and about history. We learned about the legend of Face Mountain and Face Glacier. We learned about the color of the river and how it is impacted by the silt of the Glaciers. Andy had fun with us and we even tricked him into to singing a few bars of Michael Row Your Boat Ashore...we substituted Michael with Andy. Later when one in our party announced her butt had fallen asleep, Andy broke out unexpectedly with an 80's song "you have to wiggle it, just a little bit..." This sent us into roars of laughter and became the cornerstone of our pledge to share our experience with future floaters. We had a great time. We exclaimed delight with the spread of "snacks" provided to us at the end of our journey. Among it was cheese and crackers, smoked salmon and oreo cookies, water or a juice bottle. Our day in Dyea was delightful! If you miss this while in Skagway, you have missed a lot. read more

We went on this great hike (although definitely quite physical, but manageable for our whole group) and then floated down the river where salmon jerky and cheese was waiting for us. We booked this tour through Expedia shore excursions. Our tour guide, Joe, was on time and easy to find from our cruise. The bus ride was about 30 mins from town. It was a beautiful ride and Joe had lots of great info to share. The hike was about 1.5-2 hours, and was moderate in difficulty. Joe had a lot of information to share, but also knew when not up blab on forever. We had perfect weather, so I can't speak on what a rainy day on this tour would be like. But I think the excursion would still be doable. The float down the river was amazing!!!! The views are incredible, we saw a ton of Eagles, and the ride was really smooth. We did the Hike & Float. Best value excursion ever for us. The only other tours we've been on that we liked slightly more cost much more money (including the Glacier Point Wilderness Safari which we did last time in Skagway, and is awesome, but has a much higher ratio of transportation time to total time, and is about 3x the cost). Very well organized, considering all the logistics involved. Very detailed (and accurate) website. Small groups (we had 8). Plus its pretty sweet to be able to say you've actually hiked on the historic Chilkoot trail. Our awesome guide, Bob, shared a variety of information with us throughout the entire tour, and even recommended a great lunch spot (thai food). I recommend staying closer to the front of the group for the hike so you can hear the commentary. The hike was a bit tough for me, but more so with the downhill, due to balance issues and my (more worn out than I thought) shoes slipping on the leaves, than up hill where I expected to have issues (as I'm admittedly out of shape), as we took so many breaks. There is also an easier/flatter hike option as needed, but they prefer advance notice, as they need to get another guide. The treking pole they provided was great, and I wouldn't have made it otherwise - I highly recommend taking one. Actual seasoned hikers would call this hike quite easy though. The float was my favorite part - super scenic, and even though it was my first time in a raft, it wasn't nearly as scary as I expected, as our guide gave very clear instructions and was very safety-minded. And it truly is a float, no paddling (the guide steers), so its nice and relaxing after the hike. I recommend having good hiking shoes (boots would have been nice, but not really required), to put on sunscreen if desired before the hike for the float part (the hike is mostly shaded, but the float was quite sunny for us, and there wasn't much time between the hike & float, so I was glad I put some on in the van), bring sunglasses and a hat if desired for the float part, keep your camera out (its ok to take it on the float as there is very little splashing, ideally have a neck strap though), a bottle of water (as they don't provide anything until after the float, although note the only real facilities, an outhouse, is at the trailhead, although our guide had tp for the ladies for the hike), and a snack (they provided an awesome snack spread, but not until the end, so I was glad I had my own snack for earlier). They have a dry bag in the raft for backpacks so you don't have to deal with them with over the lifejacket, and also provide rubber boots for the float part (as you wade a bit to get in & out), a dry bag for everyone's hiking shoes, and lifejackets. read more

I am normally not one to post reviews but I was so impressed with their service I felt this was the least I could to to thank them. We booked this tour independently from the cruise ship and saved about a third of the cost. No worries about not making it back to your ship on time; Skagway is pretty small and the hike and raft ride are quite close to the terminal. We met the rep right at the cruise ship terminal. She was easy to find with her sign and she directed us to our guide. He was extremely knowledgeable, friendly and genuinely enjoyed his job. We went just about a week ago and we had the BEST TIME EVER!!!! Our guide, Owen, was phenomenal! He knew so much about the land. The hike was awesome... we wanted to keep venturing and exploring! Owen was so knowledgeable on everything Skagway! He taught us all about the vegetation and land. Those watermelon berries! YUM!!! We also had 2 kids with us and he was so so patient with them. My daughter really enjoyed herself! She was asking him hundreds of questions and he answered each one with so much patience! If you go, request Owen... you wont be disappointed!!!! We had 2 kids with us, the youngest couldn't walk the last leg of the hike so I threw her on my shoulders, she's 5. The 7 year old was a trooper! Kids will love it!!!
