I have seen Dr. Michelle Chen and her assistant Ying for over thirteen years now, as have our daughter, our son, now my husband: I expect she will be our dentist for many years to come. I first met Dr. Chen when she worked at another dentist's office in El Cerrito, and once she left, I tracked her down as we had each received the finest dental care from her. Whether it is for a regular cleaning, a deep cleaning, a crown or a root canal, Dr. Chen is attentive, warm, kind and sensitive; a most efficient and thorough dentist. She and Ying, her assistant, create a relaxed and friendly but most professional environment for excellent dental care. My brother is disabled. They kept calling and requiring my brother to move around his schedule for them. Like, an appointment is only an appointment if they don't have anything better to do. My brother tried to tell them that the scheduled time worked best but that wasn't good enough for them. Apparently they can plan for emergencies 24 hours in advance. Never heard of an emergency you can plan for. This happened more than once so this is a regular thing with them. My Dad is 94, cute, and really rather frail. Dr. Chen told me they needed to fill a cavity and put it off for a few months. A cavity is good enough to put off for a few months? I don't like Dr.s who don't listen to their patients, bully them into changing their appointments but are fine with letting cavities grow, so I moved the family to another dentist right around the corner. When I took him to the new dentist, he called Dr. Chen because he couldn't find the cavity they were going to fill. Dr Chen told him it was a crown they were going to put on a perfectly fine tooth to create a bridge across the top of a gap. The gap would still be there, but food wouldn't fall down from the top. Just squish in from the sides and you would never be able to floss it.Like that's not going to cause cavities. So Dr. Chen misrepresented what she was going to do and the new dentist recommended against it because of my dad's age. It would very hard on him. Funny, Dr Chen didn't care about that. She just cared about billing for a crown which she called a filling for a cavity that doesn't exist thereby creating a cavity that would so she could then fill it. read more

I can give Dr Michelle Chen all the credit for alleviating my fear of getting dental work done (at least by her). I never thought I would say that! Because of my fear, I kept putting it off - even though I had insurance coverage! My husband actually introduced me to Dr Chen after he saw Dr Chen for a 2nd opinion. He was so impressed by her exam, diagnosis, and treatment that he raved about her and encouraged me to go see her. As a result, I have had a lot of work done (a few cavities, 2 root canals, crowns, and a bridge) including cosmetic dentistry (veneers to my front teeth)! She's thorough, fast, and does great work. I've received so many compliments on my new smile. Her practice utilizes the lastest digital imaging technology so the radiation exposure is greatly reduced. She's friendly, sensitive and takes the time to explain the work that needs to be done and the health of your teeth and gums. Since I had a lot work to be done, and knowing what kind of dental coverage I have, she was able to tell me what work was a priority and what could wait till next year. I really appreciate that since dental work can be expensive. I believe she also offers payment plans. I also must commend her on her touch. Her novacaine injections do NOT hurt! I used to brace myself for that first 'pinch" but not anymore! If I feel any part of the injection, it is the slightest poke - not enough to make me winch! My 11 year old son and 6 year old daughter also see Dr Chen. She's great with my kids, explaining just the right amount of info to let them know what she's going to do to their teeth. When I've asked them how their cavity filling went, both have casually answered, "good" without any mention of the injection they had received! They actually have no idea what it's like to be scared of the dentist! My daughter had a cavity filled and teeth cleaning done a few months ago. Dr Chen was able to determine whether or not my daughter needed any novacaine. In this case, she did not. My daughter did not feel a thing. She also loves how white her teeth look and how clean they feel that about a month after, she has asked me to take her get her teeth cleaned again! Her practice also has a flat screen TV in front of each chair so you can take your mind off the dental work that's being done. I've been seeing Dr Chen for the past 4+ years. This location is her private practice which she started up about a year ago. She used to work for a dentist in El Cerrito but once she left, I just had to look her up and follow her! Dr. Chen is our new dentist, and I expect she'll be our dentist for many years to come. I went to her last week I explained my situation, obviously distressed, and her office was able to fit me in quickly. Her staff is warm and welcoming, and the atmosphere in the office is calm. She was friendly and professional, in no way critical of the other dentist, but after a thorough examination she was able to reassure me that I'm not in immediate need of *major* dental work. What a relief! I noticed that the people in her office seem to enjoy working there, everyone is upbeat and efficient, the equipment is modern, and the place is scrupulously clean and nicely decorated. Before I left I made appointments for check-ups in a few months for my wife and myself. It's been a long time since I felt so much confidence in a dentist. I'll update this review when we've had more experience with Dr. Chen, but I have a strong feeling it will be five stars all the way. read more

I have seen Dr. Chen a handful of times over the last few years since moving to the Bay Area. Thankfully, each visit didn't involve anything major. My visits have been either for a cleaning or to check something that I was concerned about, as I've had some pretty severe dental issues in the past. I have always been able to get a convenient appointment since their office hours accommodate the 8-5 or 9-5 worker. A huge plus for me! The office is clean and pleasant. I always have wonderful interactions with both the front office staff (Karen) and with Ying. My cleanings are not too harsh and I never have to wait very long (if at all) to be seen by Dr. Chen. Just recently I went in for a cleaning and check up. At the time I was 4 mos pregnant and let them know ahead of time so they could prep to do x-rays properly. I was pleased to hear that I could get my cleaning, but that based on my exam I could hold off on x-rays until after I deliver. That was actually a relief to me because even though my doctor said it was safe (as long as you wear the lead apron), you just never know. Hopefully I don't need any major work while I'm pregnant, but it was nice to know Dr. Chen had my best interests at heart. During that last visit, I failed to make sure my new insurance was in-network with Dr. Chen's office. I misunderstood the type of plan we had and didn't realize it until after I had paid my portion of the visit and gone home. Karen spoke with my husband (the primary subscriber) and she handled the situation with tact and professionalism. I highly recommend this office! read more

Dr Michelle Chen and her totally capable assistant, Ying, are super in both competency in their work and communication of expectations of both Staff and customers! I've known Dr Chen for over 20 years, and she has always met my smallest of expectations! When I enter her workplace, I am made to feel both welcome And relaxed! In my 20's I suffered from gingivitis and she miraculously treated that and all the affects from that! I have totally had a win win relationship with Dr Chen and Assistant Ying! read more

I recently discovered Dr. Chen because I was calling around to look for a dentist who does *not* refer patients out whenever they need a root canal or other procedures (most do) These days, almost all dentists seem to specialize in doing only do one thing, and then they refer patients out to another dr. of their choice (which is a real hassle/expense for the patient). Dr. Chen is different. She does everything in her office (root canals, implants, oral surgery) and she is very affordable. I am especially impressed at how quickly she works. She even gave me a discount for prepaying since I don't have insurance. Twice she met with me and only charged me for xrays. Her staff are very kind, her office is immaculately clean, and the overall feeling I had when I walked into this business is very relaxing environment. It's not hectic and the staff don't seem stressed out by multitasking phone calls etc. It's also the only dental office I've ever visited that gives you the option to watch TV while you are being treated. I've had extensive dental work in my life, and this office is one of the best I've seen. I'm so glad I happened onto it. read more

I normally do not post reviews but after another great experience with Dr. Chen at Albany Bay Dental, it's time! I have been going to Dr. Chen for over 15 years. I have moved out of this area and there are probably over 100 available dentists more closer to where I live but I still come back to Dr. Chen. She truly cares about her patients and only provides the dental care that is of true benefit to each patient. I can tell you that I have switched dental plans over the last 15 years and Dr. Chen has ALWAYS customized a personal treatment plan that works with whatever level of coverage that I had at the time. I 100% trust Dr. Chen's professional advice and guidance. I will not go to another dentist as long as she's practicing! read more

I have been going to Dr Chen for several years now, and my family also sees her. She is honest, fair and thorough. The office is clean and modern. The staff is nice and helpful. This is the only dentist I've been to in years where the actual dentist does the cleaning, as apposed to just walking into the room at the end to look in your mouth! Dr. Michelle Chen, aka Xiaoyan Chen, is the best dentist I have ever come across. She is confident, professional, caring and straight forward with her findings. Her diagnosis ability is excellent, she explains the problems and informs you of all the solution options. Her assistants are also excellent doing what they do. When I first started looking for a dentist in the area, Dr. Cheng's staff was very kind and helpful in answering all my questions. They make you feel like family! The office is very welcoming and parking is not a problem. They are punctual, fast and do the job well. In a couple of visits Dr. Chen gave me a dental make-over. My teeth look nicer and I feel confident that she is doing a thorough job. She also made time to see me for an emergency visit almost immediately (on her day off). My family and I see her regularly and I would highly recommend her to anyone who wants a knowledgable, caring and affordable dentist. read more
