Threatened With Higher Bill for Questioning a Billing Error…read moreI've been a patient here for years. Before my September 2025 appointment, I specifically asked if I was in-network. Their office called Anthem, got a reference number, and confirmed I was covered. I even timed my appointment to make sure my x-rays would be covered. Weeks later, I got a bill--they said I was out-of-network. When I questioned it, they admitted: They had verified I was in-network before my appointment The claim was submitted under a provider I never even saw I paid the bill to avoid problems--before they even filed an appeal. Their appeal letter to Anthem acknowledges these errors and threatens to file with the Colorado Division of Insurance if Anthem didn't fix it. To my knowledge, they never followed through. Anthem denied the appeal despite their own error, but the dentist got paid either way--so they just passed the cost to me instead of standing up for their patient. When I kept asking questions, they told me they "reserve the right to adjust the balance to full patient responsibility"--implying they could charge me more for disputing their mistake. Also: their billing department has no phone number. Everything goes through a portal, making it nearly impossible to resolve anything. If you come here, get everything in writing. I did everything right and still got billed for their error--then faced pressure when I pushed back.

And the bonus... he actually recommended I not get the expensive and invasive crown and offered me a more appropriate treatment that cost me nothing! She and her staff are also skilled in periodontal maintenance and took care of my fairly minor issue within the hour. They were careful to check in about pain. His dental assistant, Salina, was also very attentive and made sure I was well taken care of. The collaborative effort of the whole team made me feel safe during my visit. I was scheduled for a two-hour appointment, and I was genuinely impressed that Dr. Smith was able to complete both the root canal and the placement of the final crown during that single visit--no temporary crown was necessary. They up-charge for fluoride which no other dentist I've been to has ever done. They add a 3% fee if you use a credit card. Current or future customers, do not believe their estimates from your dental insurance will be accurate. Call your insurance plans yourself since Boulder Canyon Dental will not! Get the correct price from your insurer and THEN decide if you want BCD to do the treatment or not. Our bill went from about $570 to about $1,100! BCD will not take the time to do a "special request" with your insurance company because BCD is a "small family-owned business" and cannot ask insurers specific questions about your dental history. By the way BCD had our dental history from past dentists, but also didn't have time to go over it, same excuse. The insurance person sure had time to give long, professional responses to my email complaints, mostly blaming our dental insurance for the estimate mismatch but she didn't have time to call them to see what the actual cost would be. We had already changed dentists before all of this occurred too. The bill came after we had our records moved to another dentist since BCD dropped our dental insurance and would charge us high prices for just fillings and X-Rays. I have felt BCD has been money hungry since starting to go there. Our friend was overbilled by $500 extra, but he fought and won a check back from BCD for the errant billing. Ours was unfortunately correct, just a bad estimate.
