It was worth it though because the place is beautiful. Our amalfi coast tour guide told us that the place is divided into roughly 5 sections with a glamorous wealthy people area behind the big main town. The island is also closed for a few months after Christmas because not very many visitors go during that time so everyone gets a break. He explained that amalfi pretty much survives only because of tourists. The area is known for their lemon products..especially the limoncello. The main area has quite a few shops and eateries as well as a few name brands. I got a lemon gelato at one of the gelaterias and I'm pretty sure they overcharged me at 5 euros. None of the gelaterias had pricing available though. There's a public restroom right outside the main area but other than that bathrooms are a bit scarce unless you dine or have coffee somewhere.

Stretching along southern Italy's coastline, it delivers a mix of natural beauty, historic charm, and Italian elegance. Each town along the coast has its own unique personality. Some of the cities include Amalfi, Positano, Ravello, Minori, Maiori, and Cetara. Winding coastal roads, lemon groves, and sparkling blue water create scenery that feels absolutely spectacular. Boat travel is one of the best ways to experience the coast. Ferries connect many towns and islands. The Amalfi Coast is a destination that lives up to its reputation. It's romantic, visually stunning, and rich in culture.

Warning! There are about 120ish (I never counted) stairs to get to and from town, hauling your bags down is tough work but it is so worth the effort once you get to the Villa and see those views. The rooms themselves were on the small end but very clean and well stocked, and the room prices were very reasonable compared to places in Amalfi proper. Francesca, our host, was so kind, friendly, and funny. The rest of the staff were so willing to help you and I loved when we would ask for something, and they'd say "of course, this is your house." Just a wonderful atmosphere. You get breakfast every day of your stay, on the first day you fill out the menu of everything you want. We accidentally ordered way too much, depending on your appetite. For a single person: I'd recommend: a coffee, a fruit tray (it's big for sharing), eggs/bacon/toast and maybe one more thing. We also were graciously allowed to take our wedding photos all around the property, and views were so stunning from every angle! We had a lovely time staying at Villa Santa Maria and I hope you do, too!

Would have been 5 stars if the walkway was open down to the private beach and if the hot tub and sauna were open. Be advised the only parking is on the street. It's hit or miss if you can find a spot.

Truly the best of the best as far as boutique hotels. The restaurant is amazing for both lunch and dinner, and then promontory that the hotel sits on has the best view in all of Amalfi. A refuge from the bustle of nearby towns and just steps from traffic on a main artery yet in a hushed world of its own. Rather than repeat many of the same phrases and thoughts found in other reviews, 2 words come to mind: Gracious and Intuitive. During our brief 3 night stay between a week in Cinque Terre and a week on Sicily, my wife and I felt saved as an injured person might upon entering a hospital. Serenity abounds. In a most understated manner, the staff - Reception, Housekeeping, Restaurant and Pool - could not be more helpful and, yes...gracious. Needs and wishes were anticipated. It all reflects well on the training and selection of personnel. The only minor skirmish occurred at the end of our scheduled spa treatments, but that was quickly resolved. The spa, as almost everyone mentions, is a sight to behold and experience. Our only regret? The need to fulfill obligations in Sicily after just 3 nights.
