Go early! I recommend going early on the first ferry to the island. Customer service was professional and friendly. We arrived around lunch to the island and it was packed! What an amazing place to visit with amazing view of the city. The ferry ride was short, about 10-15 minutes with breathtaking views of the bay! Plus it was a sunny day, we were able to see the entire bay and golden bridge without any problems...the entire tour takes about 2-3 hours with audio tours available. A lot of history to learn from here, kids were happy to see this place. Restrooms are available as soon as you arrive the island and throughout the island. It's an island with hills, may not be very friendly with tourists with mobility issues. I think last ferry service to leave the island is around 4:30pm, please check the ferry schedule as soon as you can in case it changes from time to time. I learned that night tour is available, but I don't know if I want to do that... might be a little creepy... read more

My two friends and I did the night tour at Alcatraz. It was awesome! It was everything I hoped it was going to be and more! If you do the night tour, make sure to dress warm, because it gets cold at night. Make sure to bring a camera for all the great pictures of Alcatraz Island and San Francisco on the ferry to Alcatraz Island. The staff is very knowledgeable and friendly. Tours were sold out online for weeks, but took a chance to buy them at the actual booth and was able to go that same day! Every time I've gone to SF is on a summer, and never would go to Alcatraz because tickets get sold out weeks in advanced. But, you don't have to buy them online. You can just buy it at the booth and go on the same day. However, you just gotta be there early in the AM. I got in line at 6:15am, and easily over 20-maybe 50 were ahead of me. Around 7am, one of the employees passed out tickets and told us that everyone in your party must be present. If not, you must go to the back of the line. And, if you don't have that ticket with you when it's your turn to buy tickets, you will not be able to buy tickets. Doesn't matter how long you've been in line. So have your entire party there. I saw some people that tried getting a ticket for someone that wasn't there. But they didn't give it them and forced them to go at the back of the line. Around 7:30am the ticket booth opened to sell tickets. It sucked getting up early and waiting in the cold (during the summer so dress warm and comfortable), but it was worth it because I finally got to visit Alcatraz and you can find free parking on the street. I parked in Bay Street, which was awesome because it's close to pier 39, where there are tons of restaurants. Anyway, when I finally purchased my ticket, they don't give you a choice of which tour you wanna do because they have several different ones. So the tour you'll be doing is the one for just Alcatraz. Usually, the description of this tour will say it is like 2 hours long, but it's really at your pace. There isn't a tour guide, it's an audio tour that tells you where to walk and where you need to be facing. As I was saying, I paid the tickets with a card. Even if you pay cash, whoever is buying tickets for the group must present an ID because their name will be printed on the ticket. My boyfriend and I got the tour at 10am. We were told that was the only tour available. So parking nearby was convenient because we just walked up to pier 39 and had breakfast at Eagle's Cafe and had lunch after the tour. We were told that we start boarding at 9:30am. But, we got in line a little bit before that. We got to Alcatraz around 10:15ish am and left around 1:30pm. They have scheduled ferries riding you back to the mainland whenever you're ready to head back. So you can take your time. read more

Not sure what this listing is actually for as only Alcatraz Cruises at Pier 33 (near Bay St on The Embarcadero) actually goes to the island.

We had huge problem with tickets for Duck Tour sold by Alcatraz company. Confirmation order referred to the boarding location at pier 33. We came there 1 hour before tour time. In the ticket office nobody knew where Duck tour boarding is. We called Duck Tours customer support and were told boarding is across pier 43 1/2 which was 30 mins away by feet from Alcatraz boarding. We made it 5 mins to 11, our Duck tour was full and about to leave. Luckily the representative allowed us to board on next tour at 11:30. Advice: Do not buy Duck Tour tickets thru Alcatraz web site. read more

Get on early bird tour, this place is busy. They have several tours during the day. Night tour is highly recommended. Buy tickets online to save time - long lines. Eat before tour, you can only eat on the cruise ship. Bring comfortable and nonslip ship it's wet and slippery and lots of walking to get around. read more

I had bought tickets a few years ago for an upcoming trip to San Francisco. Unfortunately due to an unforeseen illness and hospital stay, I was unable to make the trip. Okay, we should have checked more sites, but the site looked above board. We got in touch with them, but - as expected - they don't refund. You will be charged ticket processing fees, $8 per ticket AFTER your order goes through. You then learn that the inclusive fee is broken down by park ticket price,$30 and a separate fee for processing. Considering it is all online, and E tickets are printed at home, this is pure profit, ripoff. The park official vendor is Alcatraz cruises which charges no processing fees and has senior rates. The official park site is also more flexible regarding returns and exchanges with a telephone and a CSR to speak with, as I learned when I spoke with them.
