The main guy is not the person who repairs jewelry, but I got my ring back fixed seamlessly AND shined/polished/buffed to perfection within a week. This place is really amazing! I had to get my sister's 14k gold chain necklace fixed, (one of the links snapped) and wanted to get it done for her as a surprise. A bit of backstory: Now my sister was gone all week, but when I'd go in the morning they were closed and I was too tired to go after work, because personally I like local, and I like small business. But since I was going for a friend's dress fitting, I asked Macy's for their rates and times, but they wanted 60 bucks and they wanted to take it for three weeks. It wasn't the price that turned me away, but the length of time. Three weeks seemed too long for me. Now true, it wasn't your typical chain necklace (it was one of those multiple link chains that are twisted, but still separate), but I thought three weeks was a long time. One week I'd understand, but three? Anyways, I figured I'd try Alco on the weekend. So, I just went this morning (Saturday), and they not only got it done for my by 5pm, but they also only cost 15 dollars. They fixed it like new (you can't even notice where it was soldered) and it looks spectacular. They even cleaned the necklace for me. The person who was there, is I presumed the owner, as Alco looks like a small family owned business, and he was a very sweet man who was very happy to please and assist. I was really worried that I would walk into a watch shop that would try and rip me off. And then I found Alco. The man behind the counter was friendly, smiley, quick, and charged me only $3! Just got my watch battery replaced here. The proprietor of the shop did a skilful job very quickly (in less than a minute) & charged a quite reasonable fee (less than I've paid elsewhere, to tell the truth). The place *is* a tiny bit hard to find--the watch & jewelry repair business is in a tiny nook of one of the smallest shops I've ever seen, most of which is dedicated to selling clothing staples (socks, T-shirts etc.). Blink and you might miss it. But for anyone who lives on the 7 train and has a broken watch or piece of jewelry, I'd strongly recommend this place. (Re the previous reviewer who claimed, somewhat wittily, that the shop "really takes it's time"--that certainly wasn't my experience. I pick up and when just get out from the business my glass pop up I told the guy what happend he told me left and came back in 1 hour I came back in 1 hour and he said he need more time and back tomorrow. When back next day he said is not working Bc those bulova are made in China and he try to sell me other watch half price. .he gaveme my watch in 1 plastic bag I check inside my watch was dismantled he said he can't do anything and good luck and left w his broken English .300$ watch .my wife is mad to me to trust in this guy ,i never will back for sure. read more

This shop is a hidden gem of the neighborhood! I've been bringing my watches and jewelry here for years and the owner has always been courteous, knowledgable and does terrific work. His prices are very reasonable and he has never charged me or tried to convince me to do necessary work on any of my watches or jewelry. I've gone to plenty of shops in Manhattan where they try to nickel and dime you to do unnecessary work just to add onto your bill. Typically, I get my battery and bands replaced and maybe a ring resizing but on several occasions, I stupidly damaged my vintage Omega and Seiko 5 watches - I CAN'T HAVE NICE THINGS!! Just a few steps from the 61st Street-Woodside Station, this quaint little repair shop really takes it's time replacing watch batteries. There is no sign (like you see in some watch & jewelry repair shops) stating that they'll try their best to minimize any damages. I first brought my watch to the watch repair in Grand Central Terminal where I had brought watches before. They told me that it needed a new movement -- that there was a short in the electronic part of the watch and that it would cost $250 to repair and that it was not worth it. So glad to find this place on Yelp. After reading all the reviews I paid my visit here to have two of my watches' batteries replaced. The result was more than satisfactory. The owner of the store did all the work himself, who is very friendly and extremely skillful. One of my watches had a missing insulator that caused the battery to die very soon after last replacement. He pinpointed the problem very quickly after examining the watch and explained to me how it should be fixed. He provided me with the estimation of the price and time before starting any work. I made the decision to repair them and love the outcome. According to the owner, he is a retired watch maker so he is more knowledgeable about watches than average jewelers. It is proven to be very true. I'm very thankful to his work and happy to find this place for all my future watch problems. If you have good watches that need to be taken care without you being over charged, this is the place to go. read more

The battery on my watch failed as far as I knew and on the basis of the Yelp reviews I took it to Alco. The man who runs the shop diagnosed it immediately as a failed battery and replaced it with a new one for a very reasonable price. He also found another issue that I was aware of but had forgotten about and quoted another very reasonable price for resolving it. All my questions were handled with patience and courtesy. This is my idea of what a local neighborhood shop should aspire to and what adds character to the community. I went here on a Friday evening to fix my watch. The door was closed but the shop looked like the owner was around. It was already past his normal business hours. But I waited because I needed the watch for the next day. When he came, first thing he did was apologize for the wait even though it was already past his hours. He then ushered me in, took my watch, donned his magnifying glasses, asked what I do to diagnose the problem and in 5 minutes, he had the watch working. To top this all off, he refused to take any money despite my insistence. What an amazing guy! His name, he told me was Ed and that he recently took over. Very reasonable repair cost for a ring that was badly damaged (crushed by a car). I think I paid $15 or $20 and he turned it around in a day. The hours are a fairly limited (don't count on the hours posted on Yelp to be accurate) but it's definitely still open for business as of Oct 2015. read more

I tried Alco after reading the Yelp reviews (& being tired of over-paying at Tourneau. The price on battery replacements was definitely better than Tourneau ($8-$12 vs $15 ea.), but I was slightly put off by the attitude of the owner / service tech. I brought in 3 watches, one of which was a Skagen w/ a scratched crystal. He told me I was better off taking it to an authorized Skagen dealer to replace it & so I decided if I was going to make a 2nd trip, I would just replace the battery at the other place as well. This really annoyed him, despite the fact that I was replacing the batteries on the other 2 pcs there. In fact, he was practically refusing to open the 3rd watch, b/c he thought I might change my mind & he just kept repeating "I already told you, it "might" be $12 or $15...I'm not gonna open it." He clearly wasn't understanding that it had nothing to do with price. Anyway, that was a few wks ago & the watches seem to be working fine, but note "free estimate" doesn't actually include the 10 seconds it takes to pop off the back of the case & check the battery size... read more
