Kroger's the busiest grocery store in town (there are only two as of right now, but Super…read moreWal-Mart's on its way), so don't expect a close parking space, especially when there's even a hint of impending snow or ice. Thankfully, there are usually plenty of aisles open and there are also self-checkouts for quick errands. Also, don't expect to find any super exotic ingredients; this is Connersville, people. They have a few select fresh herbs and some variety of cheeses, but the veggie selection doesn't get much wilder than bok choy and they don't have a meat counter to speak of. I suggest you start Googling substitutes for anything that might be out of the ordinary in one of your recipes... or head to Meijer in Richmond. Speaking of meat counters, this place runs out of chicken all the time. I go there to pick up some boneless/skinless breast tenderloins and that section is always cleaned the heck out, leaving me with nothing but some sad-looking thighs and gizzards to choose from. But it's a relatively clean store, the aisles are relatively wide, and the staff is relatively friendly. I also use their pharmacy due to its $4 generic prescription program and the proximity to home. I just hope it'll survive in the wake of Super Wal-Mart, because I hate that place with a fiery passion.

Paveys Country Store opened in 2023 . Paveys is a chain popular in eastern central Indiana. This store is fully stocked with groceries, has fresh meats (some local), fresh produce and a deli counter. They have a fried foods counter with chicken, tenderloins, potato wedges and fried mushrooms. People were lined up. They have a little counter in the front of the store where you can eat. I had a fried chicken breast and their deli coleslaw. The breading on the chicken was crispy and fabulous. The meat was a little dry and the coleslaw tasted like run of the mill grocery coleslaw. My husband had the breaded tenderloin, which was phenomenal. The breading was seasoned well and the pork, while thick, was tender and juicy. The $7 sandwich included two large tenderloins with all the fixings. The large bun didn't hold up, but they rarely do on a good tenderloin. It was a 5 star tenderloin. We also picked up some locally made hotdogs. The grocery offers a lot of locally made products, including deer summer sausage. Prices are great, not what you'd expect from a convenience store. Service was a bit indifferent. There was no engaging conversation or smile. But it was late on the day. The store is immaculate inside. There's plenty of close parking and the structure is accessible. You can pick up lottery tickets and there's an ATM in the store.

They have two arctic foxes cooped up in a corn crib, and a coati (kind of like a raccoon) in a tiny, dark cage. The poor thing was just pacing like crazy. It made me so sad that it was hard to enjoy the rest of our trip. I just don't understand why they'd have these animals in such small enclosures - or even have them at all, since they're not exactly petting zoo material. Oh, and maybe it's too early in the season, but the apple situation was not looking so good (presumably due to the drought we had this summer). The yellow jackets did not get the memo, however.

It's small, the cages are very small and it'a mostly goats, chickens, turkeys, pigs, deer, guinea pigs, donkeys and a porcupine. If it bothers you to see animals in small enclosures, don't go. If you do go, keep your fingers out of the cages! Those suckers bite!

The parking lot's a little awkward and has a pothole that badly needs filling. If no one's at the counter they have a funny squeaky toy to signal...instead of a bell as a lot of places have. If you really can't wait a minute or two, there's a self-checkout (card only).

They do take orders for the next day and will hold the items for you to get there. She was very welcoming and eager to engage customers. Everything is baked fresh every day. I got a Cherry Pie Cup ($3) which was so delicious and flaky, like a deconstructed cherry turnover topped with a mascarpone and cream cheese blend. So fresh and good with that wonderful homemade taste. Now I am sorry I didn't get two! You have to go up several steps to enter so it does not appear that the disabled can get inside this old building. The vibe I received from the owner tells me that they would not hesitate to come out to you if needed. Open Wednesday through Saturday. Get here early!
