They had a wide selection of pies, food items, and produce to choose from. The spot feels like it would be especially fun to visit in September and October when the pumpkins are in full season as well as the apple trees and other offers that the property offers. They have a fun little train set up and large natural slide for kids as well. One of the things that stood out the most to me was their beautiful Xenia flowers on the front porch welcoming everyone in. The staff was all very friendly and helpful. A lot of the newer stores are well-organized and easy to navigate, whereas the old stores were difficult and chaotic. (I can't think of a location that would be terrible in New Paris but I still remember the smell of some chicken place that burnt to the ground just north of here but the smell is thankfully gone after all these years.) In small towns like New Paris where there is no grocery store, Dollar General wins. They have a big chain with loads of distribution capacity, so that they can offer good prices in contrast to the mom and pop grocery stores that have to charge more to sell you anything. I found this one to be a good store and the clerk was friendly. The $5.00 off coupon introducing the store was mighty helpful. If the many other locations are any indication, this New Paris location should be active for many years.

Aldi is amazing, wherever you happen to be…read more The more and more I shop for groceries, I find myself returning to Aldi. My mum loved the breakfast cereals and the chocolates. I love the meats and cheeses. When you really think about it, how often can you get items from Europe at a discount? Aldi has them, though not everything is from Europe. Of course, they also have the everyday items that you would buy from a typical American grocery store, including some rather inexpensive and fresh produce. They cover every category the big stores do and have some other items, such as small appliances and outdoor furniture, on occasion. Their skin care line is not only inexpensive, but it's apparently highly rated. When they were entering the Orlando, Florida market, they worked with tv news to provide a glimpse into their way of doing business. They constantly have taste testing of their products against national brands. If they don't feel their brand is good enough, they carry the national brand. In two or three cases, I think it's not so true or they're testing against the wrong brands. e.g., the Hot Pockets alternative tastes exactly like the WalMart brand, which is to say that it doesn't taste anywhere near as good as the Hot Pockets brand. On occasion, you'll see Hot Pockets and other Nestlé brands in the store as a special purchase. The people who work there do double duty. They stock the shelves and cashier. They're also incredibly friendly, no matter the circumstances.

What more could you want for your dollar...store?…read more Okay, so it's not the most amazing store on the planet and the cognoscenti, in this case, are on a lower budget than most but Dollar General has a lot to offer if you're careful. This is one of their older stores, which means that it frequently looks a mess. In this area, they have quite a few stores and are building more. Since 2008, the economy has been good for dollar stores and the dollar stores have been hurting Walmart, as Walmart hurt discount stores like Kmart and Woolworth. Dollar General has good deals, sometimes, great deals but you have to be willing to search and you have to be willing to move things in this store. I'd say food is their big draw. They accept food stamps and they provide their own lower-priced brand. They also have big name brands, but in quantities which aren't always the same as your typical grocery store. Calculate the value, as always. Dollar stores are sometimes more expensive than other types of stores but they confuse by using unique sizes. I started buying from Dollar General because they had grated parmesan/parmagiana cheese that I liked better than Kraft or 4C, but now, I go there for other food items and greeting cards and household items. They also have clothing, and some of it is name brand. For a store its size, the health and beauty items are plentiful. At this store, you'll even find some DVDs but you'll find them near the clothing for some reason. They've got a small refrigerator for milk, eggs, and bacon. Unfortunately, I can't find everything I want, so I end up shopping there for things I can't find elsewhere or coupon bargains. They've been running "Super Saturday" deals where you buy something during the week and take your receipt on Saturday for a 15 % (I believe) discount on your total. If you shop regularly, you'll do well. Of course, you can go to the store at the south end of town, which is much more organized since it's newer, the west side of town, or who knows where they'll build a new store soon.

They said, and I quote "we only have (2) $10s and (10) $5 and won't break a $50 this early in the morning." I was putting $25 on the car to fill it up. This is absurd. Absolutely absurd. Meijer, get your ish together. It was 8am on a Sunday. They said I could go into the store and break it and come back. Well, can't you just ask for change from the cash window then? Yes, yes you can. Drove to Casey's. They broke my $50 no problem.

I may move to Fountain City, just to be closer. Fountain City is run by local Amish. They produce and sell just about everything including furniture, dry goods, cheese and other dairy products. The shop is immense and immaculate. The shelves are filled with colorful candy, locally produced grains and flour, pasta galore, and more. At one end of the store is a bakery selling fresh donuts, pies and fry cakes. At the other end is a deli, making fresh sandwiches to order. The sandwiches are amazing. I had a turkey and ham sandwich on rye. The sandwich was packed with meat, cheese and fresh toppings. This was the best sandwich that I have had in a long time and it was $3.99. There is no place to eat inside, so you must take your food to go. The staff were friendly and efficient. The cheeses are amazing and flavorful. I picked up horseradish and bacon cheeses. The prices are reasonable. You can even buy chicken coups and outbuildings. There was an extensive collection of bird food and custom feeders. There is plenty of mid week parking, but probably crowded on weekends. Bring a cooler. This shop is fabulous.
