One of the things that turns me off about cooking is that simple meals somehow turn into $80 trips to stop and shop. Part of it is because even if you only need a tablespoon of something, you have to buy a whole container of it. Not so at fiddleheads! Oats, rice, coffee, herbs, spices, you name it- you can buy as little or as much as you need. -the fresh local food. From salmon and beef to fruits and veggies, fiddleheads has a wide range of locally and responsibly sourced fresh food. Some things are seasonal, some things are constants, but the more you shop there you will quickly get an idea of what you can find and when. -of course, the staff. Every single employee I've interacted with in my many years of coming here has been friendly, helpful, and respectful. You see a lot of the same faces year after year, and I get the impression that people truly enjoy working there. They recently just celebrated 16 years in business, which is no small feat for a co-op swimming in a sea of big chain grocery stores. For me, it's certainly not hard to see why.

As far as I know, it is not certified organic, but the prices are higher than organic at stores like Whole Foods or Trader Joe's. A very small cabbage was over $4. A bunch of radishes was $5.50. A 10-oz tomato was $3.99. The prepared foods are equally pricy, and vary widely in quality. A small tub of their "schmear", a mix of dairy and scallions that I add to potato salad dressing (it works well) is $8.50. A very small (for 2) peach galette was $8.95, but delicious and perfectly baked. A berry scone ($4.50) was a heavy lump of underbaked dough, a huge difference from the light, flaky, golden scones I get from Dagmar's in Old Saybrook. A ginger-pecan scone was better. A raspberry thumbprint "cookie" fell into pieces when I placed it in my pastry box ($4.95) -- it tasted good, but the texture was more like a lump of cold oatmeal. A single slice of house pizza ($7) made me sad -- the concept was good, but the broccoli was burnt and chewy. Most of their baked goods are too heavy and underbaked. The staff is friendly, warm, and welcoming, as well they ought to be. The parking is hideous -- cramped and inadequate, with no handicapped that I could see. The actual farmstand building is small, hot, and crowded at peak times. To sum up: I think most people assume the produce is organic, but there are no signs to that effect. The refrigerated prepared foods are generally tasty. The baked goods are a crapshoot, and at the prices, it's not worth the risk of their not being worth the money.

We were able to cut our own flowers fresh and they also had some already cut for us. They described options for greenery, how to cut certain flowers and just let us loose to pick and start arranging. We also had delicious morning glory muffins and coffee while we worked. We appreciated that assistance was available as needed but the class was not too instructional. Overall it was a really fun experience. Hopefully I'll be in town at a time we can take advantage of a farm dinner. Loved learning about the many options for outings at this beautiful farm for activities and appreciated they have opened up the property for activities.

There are a few differences between the two stores, New Morning Market offers some more healthy options, such as probiotic items like sauerkraut and yogurt drinks. I found the prices to be comparable to Whole Foods, and some of the Primal salad dressings & BBQ sauces happened to be on sale, so I saved a couple of bucks on each one I purchased. Also, I picked up a High Heat Olive oil "On Special" as soon I had walked through the front door, that was a great deal too. I also noticed they have a fairly decent stock of supplements too. Staff was very friendly and helpful, I will be back occasionally to pick up speciality items in my diet.
