If I could give WGF another half star, I would. The produce is beautiful and perfect and delicious. But oh, the prices! As far as I know, it is not certified organic, but the prices are higher than organic at stores like Whole Foods or Trader Joe's. A very small cabbage was over $4. A bunch of radishes was $5.50. A 10-oz tomato was $3.99. The prepared foods are equally pricy, and vary widely in quality. A small tub of their "schmear", a mix of dairy and scallions that I add to potato salad dressing (it works well) is $8.50. A very small (for 2) peach galette was $8.95, but delicious and perfectly baked. A berry scone ($4.50) was a heavy lump of underbaked dough, a huge difference from the light, flaky, golden scones I get from Dagmar's in Old Saybrook. A ginger-pecan scone was better. A raspberry thumbprint "cookie" fell into pieces when I placed it in my pastry box ($4.95) -- it tasted good, but the texture was more like a lump of cold oatmeal. A single slice of house pizza ($7) made me sad -- the concept was good, but the broccoli was burnt and chewy. Most of their baked goods are too heavy and underbaked. The staff is friendly, warm, and welcoming, as well they ought to be. The parking is hideous -- cramped and inadequate, with no handicapped that I could see. The actual farmstand building is small, hot, and crowded at peak times. To sum up: I think most people assume the produce is organic, but there are no signs to that effect. The refrigerated prepared foods are generally tasty. The baked goods are a crapshoot, and at the prices, it's not worth the risk of their not being worth the money. read more

We have visited this farm for organic produce previously and were very happy with the quality and selection. Recently we attended a flower arranging class and had a wonderful time. We were able to cut our own flowers fresh and they also had some already cut for us. They described options for greenery, how to cut certain flowers and just let us loose to pick and start arranging. We also had delicious morning glory muffins and coffee while we worked. We appreciated that assistance was available as needed but the class was not too instructional. Overall it was a really fun experience. Hopefully I'll be in town at a time we can take advantage of a farm dinner. Loved learning about the many options for outings at this beautiful farm for activities and appreciated they have opened up the property for activities. read more

Stopped by White Gate for their FarmFest Saturday's. Packed the kids, our drinks, beach chairs and a blanket and made a thing of it! It was a beautiful day for pizza and live music outdoors. The farm has immaculate lawns - perfectly manicured. It felt so posh to just be outside enjoying each other's company with live music and food! Onto the food, the food was delicious (crispy thin crust and no burnt spots) but pricey. The cheese pizza we had was 14" for $18. (14" pizza is probably a medium pizza in most places.) We had the sugar snap pea limeade for $4/cup. And, a large chocolate chip cookie with flaked salt. I forgot how much the cookie was. It was tasty and the salt gave it extra oomph. The pizza was cooked in about 10 mins. There was also Jon's Fish, a local seafood vendor, serving raw oysters and other yummy seafoods. (I've had their offerings many times before but didn't have it this day.) For vendors, there was a small clothing shop, two soaps (one CBD based) and pretty seashell type knickknacks. Their farmer's market was open. I was hoping to find some baked goods (like a crusty bread and cheese?) to eat with the pizza but didn't see much this day. Only saw a loaf of sliced sandwich bread. There was some dips and homemade popsicles ($4/ea) in a small fridge but the rest was fresh seasonal veggies and fruit. The kids had fun running around the lawn and checking out the chickens. Oh, they have suggested donations to help the band out at $5/couple and $10/family. read more

Just went today to their Wednesday Farm stand. I LOVE this place! The people that own it and work here are so wonderful- warm-smart, etc. The food is all organic and gorgeous and delicious. The produce and baked goods and eggs they sell are not cheap but you get what you pay for. The tomatoes are fantastic- no way you would buy one from the grocery store if you tasted these. I bought scallions and squash and lettuce and beets. The beets I just roasted and peeled and they are yummy. Take your kids do they can see a quaint family owned farm. I believe you can sleep over in the guest house, too. I attended their " Dinner on the Farm" event in August and it was spectacular- definitely go next summer if you can. It's a benefit dinner that all the food comes from either this farm or other locally sourced farms and fishermen. If you can't grow your own- go to White Gate. read more

There's something magical about this place. Hidden in back down a country road, moments from busy central East Lyme, convenient to major thoroughfares. But it takes you back - to the simple life, when food was REAL, had flavor, and nice folks grew it and sold it to you. Not that owners/farmers Pauline and David have it real simple. They work so very hard to provide the area's most amazing organic produce. When was the last time you tasted a REAL vegetable? Treat yourself to their free samples of their splendid turnips and carrots and Wave hill bread with homemade preserves and salsas, and help yourself to the fridge for organic eggs, and the freezer for chickens and lamb. Why I don't like this farm restaurant very much. Maybe its just my home particular experience, which most people who live around this area do not share; but having lived in Vermont where family farms are commonplace, are all different in the aromas of the usual potpouri of cow manure and cheese; and fast food restaurants are unknown, I find this business to be not a little contrived, precious and pretentious. Its as if hundred of years of a humble family subsistence farm, imbedded in a community with altruistic and unselfconscious pride could be simulated by an Urban yuppie couple, producing perfectly organically certified perfectly symmetrical apple pies, Frenchified fancy bits, open 2 or three days a week. At the register, the soft uncalloused hands of the boss's nice guy hubby, who looked like he could not wait to get back to his winter digs. kicking back with a single malt, and his New Yorker. Look there worse things going on in this state, where weapons production is the sole growth industry, and the fortunate scions of idle rich, cavort, and preen in their enclaves, so close to the desperate lives of those trapped in dying cities It's just that find it hard enjoy the privileges of this normalized dystopia, that I share the responsibility for creating. read more

Delicious meals to go like lasagna (gluten free), amaranth bowl, chicken salad. Fresh pesto and bone broth, pizza slices, frittata slices. Wonderful produce too. Early spring and we picked up Asian greens, garlic, shiitake mushrooms and bone broth. My wife and I usually eat a "to go" meal there sitting in a field or on a bench and get lots of extras and produce to go. They also have a nice selection of pastries and goodies. Some gluten free, some not. We drive about 25 minutes from Essex to get here and it's more than worth it every time. The farm manager and owner are lovely people and they have dinners and cooking classes too. Highly recommend. read more

You may know by now that White Gate in East Lyme is one of my favorite farm stands, and a trek over is on my to-do list come Saturday morning. This year I found some fun new developments among the bags of carrots, kale, and greens (it's still early after all). Lesley Moore, whose cupcakes adorned my newsletter a couple of weeks ago, is setting up shop in the Farm Kitchen and all her treats (gluten-filled or free) will be available at the farmstand and by special order. I'm a girl who gets excited about a smoothie, so I was thrilled to find Carolann of the Lyme Juice Company squeezing away in the "tomato" room. She handed me shots of healing, anti-inflammatory elixirs (fresh organic turmeric, ginger, pepper), as she blended my dairy-free delight of wild blueberries, pear, apple, lemon, orange, ginger, flax and hemp seeds plus freshly picked kale ($8). A filling, protein-filled and delicious breakfast potion. Carolann's devotees queued up for her organic concoctions created from as much freshly picked farm product as possible (see above, it's still early!). You've probably heard me wax rhapsodic about the farm bakery's Gluten Free Cookies (chunky, slightly sweet, so satisfying), and combined with a smoothie on a beautiful morning at the farm made for a perfect and energizing start to the day. Had a rare opportunity to visit the Farm Market this weekend and soooooo grateful. We had some delicious eats and bought some amazing ingredients for later. Fresh organic food is amazing.
