I came in search of a fresh fried donut. This is a farm that offers fruit pickings and vegetables for sale. They have a donut frier along with 2 cider donut options- regular and apple cinnamon sugar. I tried the apple cinnamon sugar. The donut I bought was fried an hour ago and it was still warm. Delicious- although would have been better if I could have gotten it right off the frier. Not too sweet, the batter is well mixed so the texture was an equal sensation throughout the donut. Overall tasty experience and would recommend it! Parking outside, bathroom available, friendly staff.

The times they are a-changin. Going to the store and actually having a paid employee scan your items for you? Please, that was so 5 years ago. We'll not only pay for our food but we'll scan it and bag it for ourselves and you don't have to pay us a dime to do so. In these times where customer service usually comes in the form of a dissatisfied customer coming to complain about a defective product (I once overheard some lady complain: "Yes. I bought this cake last week and SURPRISE! It was half eaten! I want my money back!"), pick your own places are still loads of fun.For one thing, it's essentially a fruit buffet. I like to do the One for You, One for Me method: I pick up an apple and say, "one for me" and bite it and then grab another apple and say, "one for you" and put it in the bag. And besides, these are tough times for farmers so we may as well help them out and do their job of picking the ripest fruits for them. Not only that, but we'll pay premium prices for the stuff too! One word of caution though: don't walk into your neighborhood grocery store and take a bite out of all the produce to see if you want to pick any more of a specific item. A couple notes about this location: - The farm stand (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/txn2gSZYzmuYBORsmi8VdQ?select=sehbZQgcSm7jqPltbp1xog) is located on Rte. 1. I tried a bottle of the unpasteurized apple cider ($1.50) and it was as delicious as it was risky to drink. The corn also seemed popular here as several customers came in asking if there was anymore corn. The stand is open from April through December 31: 9am-5:30pm. - The pick your own/corn maze area is just down the street. It's close enough to walk to but not while carrying bags of apples. Strawberries: June through July Raspberries: July Blueberries: July through August Peaches: August through September Apples: Labor day weekend through late October Pumpkins: late September through the end of October - Wagon rides, a corn maze, and donuts are also available. - We picked apples and it was $18 for a 1/2 bushel bag. The apples were delicious, but the selection was limited compared to other places I've been to. My 8 month old daughter had a great time in the pumpkin patch. A great way to spend a fall afternoon.

If I could give WGF another half star, I would. The produce is beautiful and perfect and…read moredelicious. But oh, the prices! As far as I know, it is not certified organic, but the prices are higher than organic at stores like Whole Foods or Trader Joe's. A very small cabbage was over $4. A bunch of radishes was $5.50. A 10-oz tomato was $3.99. The prepared foods are equally pricy, and vary widely in quality. A small tub of their "schmear", a mix of dairy and scallions that I add to potato salad dressing (it works well) is $8.50. A very small (for 2) peach galette was $8.95, but delicious and perfectly baked. A berry scone ($4.50) was a heavy lump of underbaked dough, a huge difference from the light, flaky, golden scones I get from Dagmar's in Old Saybrook. A ginger-pecan scone was better. A raspberry thumbprint "cookie" fell into pieces when I placed it in my pastry box ($4.95) -- it tasted good, but the texture was more like a lump of cold oatmeal. A single slice of house pizza ($7) made me sad -- the concept was good, but the broccoli was burnt and chewy. Most of their baked goods are too heavy and underbaked. The staff is friendly, warm, and welcoming, as well they ought to be. The parking is hideous -- cramped and inadequate, with no handicapped that I could see. The actual farmstand building is small, hot, and crowded at peak times. To sum up: I think most people assume the produce is organic, but there are no signs to that effect. The refrigerated prepared foods are generally tasty. The baked goods are a crapshoot, and at the prices, it's not worth the risk of their not being worth the money.

We were able to cut our own flowers fresh and they also had some already cut for us. They described options for greenery, how to cut certain flowers and just let us loose to pick and start arranging. We also had delicious morning glory muffins and coffee while we worked. We appreciated that assistance was available as needed but the class was not too instructional. Overall it was a really fun experience. Hopefully I'll be in town at a time we can take advantage of a farm dinner. Loved learning about the many options for outings at this beautiful farm for activities and appreciated they have opened up the property for activities.

Then we walked down to the lovely tulip field to pick our own tulips. While there are only about 6 rows of tulips, they are absolutely gorgeous. You're also allowed to pick the bulbs and bring them home with you, so I can't wait to try growing my own next year. It's a great way to spent an hour or so picking your own flowers and supporting a local business. I'll def have to come back for if they do other food picking later on in the year!

However, the stars finally aligned this summer after he finally realized two things 1) We eat a ton (not literally...ok maybe literally) of vegetables year round and 2) He saw the diversity of produce one of his co workers' received each week from a CSA at Bishop's Farm last year. CSA programs provide a great opportunity that links the farmer directly to the consumer It's a great way to cut out the middleman, develop a relationship with a local farm and get weekly or or twice monthly fresh produce during the spring and summer growing season. Over the winter we signed up and paid a membership fee to buy "shares" for the spring and summer growing season. These membership fees do vary by farm and depends on things like production costs, what produce you receive, and growing season. Beckett Farm had the option of an early Summer Share and a Regular Summer Share. The early Summer Share ran from May to the end of June. Pick up throughout the entire season was on Mondays from 4-7pm. If they had "left over or extra" we had the option to purchase additional items. From the first week we knew that we had made the right decision - fresh asparagus, lettuce, radishes and beets were filled our first box along with lemon basil - a new to me herb. The difference between fresh picked asparagus cooked on the grill and what you find in the grocery store is like night and day. During the summer we opted for the Summer Share where received a box of produce every other week. We chose this option instead of the weekly share since it is just Mark and I we were not sure 1) how much produce we would get each week and 2) how much of the food that we received we would actually eat and how much would go to waste. I am happy to report that only about 5% or less went to "waste". The rest was happily eaten and some itemzs (like the snap peas and green beans) have been frozen for winter use. The produce varied from week to week depending on what was ripe and ready to be harvested. Some weeks we had a variety of different fruits and vegetables and other weeks we had a lot of the same thing. This was trulely an adventure and definately got Mark and I out of our comfort zone. It forced us to try things (like mustard greens and japanese eggplant) that we would probably not bought on our own. That's one of the beauties of Becktt Farm and CSA program in general - the ability to get fresh fruits and vegetables and a chance to expand your culinary horizons. I also loved the fact that I received an email each Monday before our pick up to let us know what would be in our shares. I can honestly say this was an awesome experience for Mark and I and we can't wait until 2013 to sign up again!
