Very reasonable pricing, no contracts, tons of class times, and great people. All levels, from beginners to black belts, train here. The environment is very welcoming. Competition is encouraged but not required, and there are many very successful competitors here in different age ranges, weight classes, and belt levels. Focusing on the kid's side for this review: Started about 3 years ago with my 4 year old daughter. We came for a trial class and enjoyed it, so decided to keep training. Another big factor was the female ownership and strong female membership. I wanted my daughter to have those examples to look up to. We have never done any martial arts or wrestling before, so I wasn't sure how either of us would fair. My daughter loves her coaches and they really do a great job of keeping things fun yet disciplined and engaging. They all genuinely care about their students. They make sure everyone is safe and working together in a controlled way. Coach Jen and Coach Kat started her off with Wee Warriors and the basic skills. She has been able to move up and promote into the more advanced classes with Coach Kari and Coach Eli. She also loves helping with the younger kids whenever she can with Coach (and owner) Karen, Coach Eli, or Coach Jen. It's nice that all of the coaches generally work together and help eachother, and there are many other coaches that I am sure I am neglecting to mention who have contributed to my daughter's progress. The lessons are consistent no matter who is leading the class, and generally build on the previous lessons or review skills already taught. Plenty of private and small group lessons available as well for extra training if desired. The more my daughter participates and engages with her coaches, friends, training partners, and other competitors, the more she enjoys being at Genesis Jiu Jitsu. Every class the instructor comes up to me and tells me what he did wrong in class, which I appreciate the opportunity to work with my son in addressing issues so no problem there, but the last straw of his attitude was when he took his belt away, I asked what my son was doing because I was actually watching and for the first time mine wasn't being out of line and his response with a snark said "he's just being Ty" well i can't work on anything with him if you won't tell me but the attitude is very telling of how you feel about my autistic child, mild but that doesn't matter, and he still feels your attitude because children are very intuitive. Either way, I've never met a 4 year old that doesnt wiggle. Another day before class the instructor addressed my son and i said "it's not an excuse but he hasn't slept more than 4 hours at a time in the last 2 weeks so it's a little rough" and the instructor literally told me "that's a home issue, give him nyquil" to a 4 year old. When we signed up the paper states $200 termination fee if leaving before 6 months but I was told in person by the lady in charge "but I don't charge that for kids because they change their mind a lot" no I didn't add an addendum the paper because I had a fussy nursing baby so no hands to write entire sentences. She charged it anyways to a card they didn't have permission to use but I used it in their business once to buy his uniform and pay the start up fee, and she tried the approved card first but it was declined because it was stolen recently. she sent a link when we signed up for future monthly payments that were to be charged on a completely DIFFERENT card and permission was revoked in writing to use original card they had on file. She's now saying the contract wasn't notated and initialed, either way you should stick to your word and not lie, but also verbal agreements are binding in the state of Texas.

I was invited to come to 2 days of classes to decide which style would suit me. The building isn't in the greatest neighborhood and the school was ok. The impressive thing about the school was the quantity and diversity of weapons around the school. Sifu Cottrell, the owner and teacher at the school greeted me warmly. Classes were in session and Sifu took the time to give me a tour. He Started with his lineage, who his teachers were and who his teacher's teachers were. In Sifu's lineage, Ip man had taught his teacher! We sat for a while, while he educated me on Wing Chun and how Bruce Lee was the most famous practitioner. I came the next day to see Praying Mantis style, which even for a lay person was vastly different than Wing Chun. I had never seen anything quite like it, especially after watching so many Kung Fu movies. Sifu and I agreed Mantis would suit me best and it has. The instructors are top of the line. So patient, will explain and demonstrate techniques 100 million ways until you get it. I always felt supported and inspired to learn from the community of students. I never heard anyone speak an ill word or treat anyone poorly. The community of students welcomed me and I felt safe to both succeed and feel failure. Truly, I could go on and on, but there really is no greater place to learn Kung Fu and to embrace your potential.

As fun as it is to watch, it's absolutely amazing to see the transformation of discipline, confidence and respect in just a few short months at school and home.
