I got all my paperwork finished beforehand so check-in was a breeze. The facility is extremely clean and sterile and I swear, the ladies at the front are some of the nicest people you'll every meet. In fact, that trend continues to all the staff! I'll admit, I hate going to the dentist. I don't like my face being touched with a drill and while I practice good hygiene, I grind my teeth so I always have a chipped tooth or something to fix. I called this practice to make sure they would accept my insurance. Not only did they accept it, they were very up front with coverages so I literally had no surprises. My particular issue was I chipped a molar, which I told them over the phone. No, problem and they accepted me within 2 days. Upon getting seated, the assistance was extremely fast, very friendly and knowledgeable about exactly what needed to be done. Xrays were completed within minutes. It might have been even quicker but I'm a former comedian so I prolonged the visit by setting up jokes; which they humored me in laughing. Soon after the doc came in and did a quick looksie and found another issue. Dr Steven Bates was about the nicest person I've ever met and quick to work. I said "hey doc, tell me something good while I know it's bad." His response was "this is a fast fix but the other tooth we'll have to refer you to someone that can do a root canal." Still his demeanor was professional, caring and to the point. What I really liked is he gave me the price up front so again, no surprises. He numbed me up and within 10 minutes that darn high pitched drill was whizzing in my ear. Truth be told, he was extremely gentle, even with the needle and the procedure. I was astounded by the speed at which he operated and lack of pain or general discomfort during the procedure. Literally it was only 20 minutes or so. Now I realize all cases are different but fixing a tooth always drives up my anxiety so one can imagine how happy I was it was completed before I knew it. The most humorous situation was I kept thinking I needed a seatbelt. Anyways, badda bing.. I was done in a jiffy. While I can't speak to a normal cleaning I am extremely satisfied with all aspects of my visit and it was very reasonably priced. This staff is very professional and there's no upselling, procrastination or pain. De Steven Bates is a very competent individuals which is reassuring when teeth and drills are involved. Do we not realize, these people are key to making kissing our lovers more palatable (bonus if you caught the play on words)? Considering I what I just wrote, I've pondered this dilemma many times. So in essence I'm more apt to cut some slack in these regards. At Old Trolley Dental Associates off of the namesake road, they will take very good care of you. That said the parking lot is very easy to get in and out of and it's in a very safe section of town. Walking in, it's very clean and sterile. Moreover, the people here are phenomenal! From the front desk, to the assistants and so on they're all extremely kind. Moreover, they were able to get me in very quickly, which I can't claim about so many other options in the area. When I first got in the chair they went over my issues, did xrays, did an inspection and had a quote pretty quick. This is important b/c dental work can get expensive very quickly. In other words there were no surprises while the assistant was extremely helpful and literally took measurements of everything. Literally the most comprehensive exam I've ever had. Next, enter Dr Scott Kibler. Of course, I had to throw the "anti-dentite B###" from Seinfeld in there. He had a great sense of humor. But what I really liked is he was a realist, not sugar coating (pardon the reference) my exam and treatment. As for the procedure, he's very efficient and will numb you up as much as needed. I never felt pain and was surprised how quick the procedure went. It was the smoothest visit I've ever had, even with getting a crown. Also this point is HUGE. They do the crowns on site via a 3D printing machine. This means, no temp crown and having to come back later. This to me was a most welcome surprise. Overall, the process was detailed and their work which included numerous xrays remedied my situation. The price was as expected and there were no "gotchas." The staff were excellent and I love the dentist. I believe you can have faith in this practice that they have your health in mind when taking care of you. For the first time ever, I won't mind going to the dentist.

However, I have some serious concerns about this practice otherwise. In addition to experiencing multiple botched procedures (a filling that resulted in permanent sensitivity, a veneer replacement that was prepped for the wrong tooth the first time around, followed by a finished product I only later realized was a replica of...the wrong tooth, and a questionable experience with a bite guard fitting)--my greatest concern is that I believe the practice positioned elective and/or wholly unnecessary procedures as critical to my health as a means to make money. In fact, I am deeply suspicious that they may have drilled one or more of my healthy teeth --which is a disturbing thought under any circumstance, and even more so given one of the fillings resulted in permanent sensitivity on a tooth with no issues before the procedure was done. What on earth would lead me to believe this? For starters, there was a pretty startling difference between the exam I had with my previous dentist--who gave me a glowing review of my teeth--and my first exam with Peninsula, where I was stunned to learn I had developed FIVE cavities in the roughly 12-18 months between the two appointments, which was more than all the cavities I had in the prior 30-odd years combined. That said, I knew I was overdue for a dental appointment, and I had been less compliant with daily flossing after having recently had a child, so despite my surprise, I didn't think too long about it. After the poor report and an impassioned pitch from the hygienist about my need for orthodontics if I hoped to maintain my dental health and facial structure (all news to me), I was sent home with a prescription toothpaste and a follow-up appt for fillings and a bite guard fitting, which went more or less as expected. At the three-month follow-up, imagine my surprise when, after using my prescription toothpaste and loyally brushing and flossing, I was told I had a new cavity since the last appt, and that there were several other spots they were watching closely. Again, I was scheduled for another three months out for a filling and cleaning, and in between, I also saw them for a less-than-ideal veneer replacement. When I was told YET again that I had a new cavity at that next appointment, I expressed my utter shock and dismay about my deteriorating dental health, despite following cleaning guidance to a tee, and never having had any such issues before. The hygienist suggested maybe the bacteria or amount of saliva in my mouth changed on account of the medication I was taking, or due to hormone fluctuations, and the dentist attributed it to the deep grooves of my teeth--which didn't exactly put my mind at ease, despite sounding feasible enough. At the time, I had an appointment scheduled for the braces they strongly encouraged me to get. But after the botched veneer, the sensitive filling, and the seemingly inexplicable spate of cavities that continued to develop between each appt, I felt increasingly uncomfortable with and suspicious about the entire situation, and I never returned. It took me a really, really, really long time to make an appt with a new dentist after my experience with Peninsula, and I was nervous about what he would find given how overdue I was for an exam, and how awful my reports had been at Peninsula. I finally got back in the chair again today, and was relieved to receive another glowing report and lots of compliments about my teeth and the care I take of them. Interestingly, neither the hygienist or the dentist saw any indication of cavities or any "areas of decay" that Peninsula was monitoring, nor did either make any suggestion about my need for orthodontics, despite the practice offering the service. After a very thorough exam, cleaning, and fluoride treamtment--during which I received numerous compliments about my teeth--they stressed the importance of me wearing the bite guard I already own, and told me to come again in 6 months for a regular cleaning. I am happy to find a dentist I trust in the area. But I left feeling more dubious than ever about my experience with Peninsula, which I gave two stars on account of the friendly staff and nice office. Given I have no solid proof of malfeasance, I will leave a sliver of room for the notion that I found Peninsula during a moment of rare and acute dental dysfunction, and the the massive amount of dental work they completed or recommended was on the up and up. But it strikes me as unlikely.
