There is something quite charming about this old school style opticians. The people that work there are very warm and friendly. It differed from my specsavers experience in that It didn't have that cattle market feel. The lady Kathy who tested my eyes was lovely and the gent that helped me pick my glasses too. I highly recommend going to this shop. Very good service and it felt that the people working there genuinely cared.

This is a small specialist optician, with a very personal service and great selection of frames. Very professional staff across the board who appreciate that good service leads to repeat custom. They always give whatever time is required to any customers I have seen during my visits. This may result in a small wait, but at least you know they will deal with your query through to resolution. Would strongly recommend for anyone looking for an independent reliable service.

Ironically the two consultants I met first, had been trained in Specsavers and to be honest they were lovely, but the owner/optician who did the final consultation was awful.I felt pushed into getting a pair of bi focal glasses with top end frames and they really were no fit for purpose. I returned in a couple of weeks to say that I just could not see the computer properly and I had stated that this was my main reason for needing the glasses. The owner dismissed me and said I just needed to get used to them. A year later, I am almost a thousand euro down,the expensive frames broke and the glasses are useless to me.Never again !

Please stay away from Optica at 6 Dawson Street. Wanted to check their selection of frames. Was told by Deirdre that only by appointment. There was only one customer in the shop at the time. Found Deirdre quite arrogant. I decided to give another try a week later. Knocked on the door and was greeted by Donal. Was told once again to make an appointment to view any frames. I was given an email. Went home & emailed Optica Shop. Four days have passed & no reply. On a fifth day decided to go back to the shop as it is on my way home from work and inquired regarding my appointment. Was told by Donal that email received, however, Deirdre has more than 30 emails to reply to so I should wait. After getting home, I decided to use a different email address and my middle name to see if perhaps I will get lucky However, days have passed and no reply. The only way that this shop can get 3.9 stars rating out of 5 is because they have written reviews for themselves or asked some friends to acknowledge their shop. I have never in my life come across a place with such an unprofessionalism & pure arrogance. Don't even understand why this shop is open ? Perhaps they just feel lonely and like to look at the passersby walking down Dawson Street. The service at Gill Opticians from the time you enter the shop is beyond amazing. The attention to detail exceptional. I made an appointment to have my eyes checked which took 45 minutes. After that I was introduced to another person to help me to choose my frames ( no appointment necessary for that ) Jaime helped me to find the correct frame for the shape of my face etc. I absolutely love my new frames. I've been around the block when it comes to opticians but a few years back I decided to stick to…read morethis one... and I think I know the moment I made that decision: WIthout my glasses I can barely see, so picking new glasses always means squinting at the mirror trying to guess from the blurry shapes which frames looked the best. That is until the wonderful Mary offered to put contacts in for me while I picked them out (yes I haven't got contacts... can't quite bring myself to put something in my eye!) Suddenly it was all so much easier! Of course they also have the technical expertise and look after your optical health very well. They lose a star for their frame selection. The shop isn't that big so this has to be limited. They usually have quite a nice array of designer frames which reflect what's in fashion, but sometimes you want something different at it's not there. They also usually do a deal on a second pair so they manage to be competitive with the bigger chains. If you want a good service where your eyes are looked after rather than a large conveyor belt opticians experiences this is a good place to go.

All was fine til I went out to…read morethe driving licence centre, having waited a couple of weeks for an appt, where I was told the form was incorrectly filled out. I had to leave, get a new form and reapply for another appt which was also weeks away. When I left I called the optician to tell them and the woman who answered the phone was beyond rude. I know the issue wasn't her fault per se but when you work in a customer facing job you sometimes have to apologise for things that aren't your fault. She was really dismissive of me and eventually I told her that I would have appreciated an apology as it was a big inconvenience having taken time off work to go to which she replied "I'll let the optician know." Oh. Right. I'll never go back here!
