I was sad to learn that Dr. Sophie is no longer practicing there, but Dr. Kirk came in to save the day. This was our first time with Dr. Kirk. He is very knowledgeable and extremely passionate about he does. He was also very accommodating; I was expiercing sensory overload in the waiting room when he was trying to explain something to me, and it was like he picked up what I was sensing and was able to take me somewhere quieter in the room. I'm not a big fan of change, especially since we were with Dr. Sophie for a while, but based on Dr. Kirk's energetic, enthusiasm, and knowledge, I feel comfortable that my pugs will be with him. read more

We are currently looking for a vet closer to this area and decided to give this place a try. We've previously been loyal to Beverly Vet since my dog was a puppy of 8weeks. He's almost 5 years old now. Unfortunately, I've been to Alhambra Vet a few times already and if you value your TIME, do not come here!!! The front desk is blatantly the worst. Idk where they found this employee but Diane will make you do extra work for no reason. No wonder why there's always a wait to reach the front desk when you call. They "require" you to do unnecessary bullshit and waste your time. A simple task on their end would turn into a huge headache here. We took our dog to this vet because he had an ear infection. After we got home, I realized that I lost one of his medication. So then I submitted the prescription on Chewy.com and after a whole week, they finally declined my order. Apparently, it was submitted through my email and not through my husband's email. She said they only have my husband's info since he was the first one to bring our dog to this vet. Even though I'm the one who schedules the appointments... and the last person who took our dog here two weeks ago. All of our info would be exactly the same except my husband's name and mine. I'm on his email and use it all the time too btw. So I called the front desk and she said they declined it because I am not the owner listed on their end and that they're waiting for me to complete the "new client form" to transfer all the ownership to me. LOL again, we are both the owners... we live in the same house with our dog... but I guess since my husband was the first person to bring our dog to their vet, I am not considered an owner. If this is their protocol then this is the easiest way to lose a customer. But honestly, I think she just wanted to waste my time. I also asked for a dental quote which I still haven't received till this day. Mind you, I last visited with my dog almost 2 weeks ago. Either this place is extremely slow with everything or front desk employees are simply incompetent. Then this evening Dr. Gil gave me a call. He was super respectful and professional. I explained the situation and right after we hung up, he approved the prescription right away and sent a follow up email as well. This is after hours too. I've been coming to this clinic many years ago while the ownership transitioned. I have several clinics that I used to bring my pets in this area, and have seen some vets has jumpship many times in other clinic and I just want a constant vet who care about my pets who can trust and see regularly, that's why I came back to check out how this place has become. I have had both positive and mixed experiences. The staff is generally friendly, and the veterinarians are knowledgeable, which I've always appreciated. The clinic now feels much more corporate, than it used to be, and while it has had a physical facelift, it seems to have lost the personal, neighborhood feel that made it special. I tried to avoid vet clinic that owned by big corporation but this feel like they are trying to get there.. The biggest concern is the pricing. I understand that costs have gone up everywhere, especially for veterinary care, but the increase here has been drastic. Consultations used to be around $60ish and are now $89 -- Standard fecal test over $100, where other clinic charge about $70-$80, the exact same prescribed pills charged $70 for 5 pills and chewy only cost $20 for 4. Those.. at least a 25% jump. Other clinics I've seen have raised prices more gradually, around 5-10% over the past several years, so this kind of increase is hard to justify even after a facelift. At the same time, the quality of care doesn't seem to have improved. Wait times are still long, and appointments often feel rushed, which makes it harder to feel confident and comfortable during visits. Overall, while the clinic still provides decent care, my dog seems to get better day by day. However, the value and experience are not what they used to be. It's disappointing to see a once well-loved local clinic change in this way. read more

Background: I started coming here around 2018-19 when I moved back to SGV so I had experiences with both the current and previous owners. Service: I have no issues with the service. The receptionists, vets, and vet techs were all great, friendly, and well-mannered. Business Practice: The business side of this clinic has made the entire experience less genuine and caring. It has made me and my dog feel like nothing but dollar signs to them. Again, everyone here is nice and friendly but this feeling of "bill padding" can leave your mouth a bad taste. All of a sudden your dog has high blood pressure and they want him/her on medication. Every blood pressure reading cost $50 and the medication is $15 for a 30 day dose. The constant emphasis that your dog will probably be on this medication for the rest of his/her life but your dog will not get more refills unless you pay another $50 for another blood pressure reading. Then they want your dog to up or lower the dose to see if the medication is working so they want more readings so that's another $50. Your dog missed a scheduled prescription dose or he/she didn't finish their medication? Then we do this process all over again so that's another $50 for the blood pressure reading and another $15 for the prescription. Oh, your dog has early stages of kidney failure. Here are some prescription food you can buy from us. Your dog is probably going to hate this food and you will struggle immensely getting your dog to eat this disgusting and foul smelling food but you need to buy it from us. We will not give you a recipe to cook at home for your dog. Oh, you want to pay with credit card? That will be a 3% extra charge. You, the owner, just see this the invoice rack up in front of you and it feels so unsettling to the point that it feels a bit inauthentic. The wait: This one of my annoyances with this clinic. It's normal to wait a good amount of time before your appointment. It's normal in every healthcare setting so it's something I fully understand. But why am i waiting even longer to be charged out? Does this clinic think we are free for the rest of the day? It's insane that I am waiting LONGER to pay than when I waited for my dog to be seen. I have never been to a clinic that had me wait this long to pay. So it makes sense that everyone is nice and friendly. You're waiting so much in this clinic and they probably know that you're fed up with the waiting so they have to be nice. read more

Usually going to the vet can be stressful but the two receptionists, Crystal and the gentleman were very kind not only to us but everyone who walked in and made sure to acknowledge every pet as well. Everyone was super friendly here! From moment we walked in, we were greeted with friendly faces and the place is CLEAN which is a bonus. I think our vets name was Dr Sophie? Zero stars! After a disastrous experience I strongly encourage other potential clients to get services elsewhere. We paid this place a fortune to be USDA vet certified in the assistance of traveling abroad to Portugal. They failed to inform us that we couldn't even board the plane until portugese authorities clear the scanning of the microchip before an vaccinations-that we had to prove our Akita was scanned long before any rabies first shot ever. They should know this and prepare us for this glitch. But they failed to do so and the owner of this place is just horrible, rude and unprofessional. Even when I sent him the portugese authority email stating clearly I couldn't move forward the day of the flight until I corrected this huge mess up. I had spent 700.00 at the USDA certified veterinarian only to be told by the owner, it's not our responsibility to tell you this information only to provide a health certificate". Such nonsense because thereafter I called three more USDA certified vets-who all said very clearly "of course you can't land in Portugal without the scanning proof of her chip number before any shots are administered". They all seemed to know and all said it was unprofessional not to notify us when spending 700.00 to be flight bound ready for international travel. Client beware-far better places to take your pets! Watch, the owner to the business will come onto this review and lie about the contents of my review to cover his own unprofessionalism and incompetence not remotely taking responsibility for a fact that was shown to him in text by an email from the Portuguese authorities literally hours before my departure telling me I must have a letter from the breeder of her scanned microchip showing it was scanned before any vaccination-portugese authorities had the USDA paperwork in hand and still wanted certification of her microchip being scanned before first rabies shot. Other vets knew this but not this one-how come???? Yes the female Veternarian I dealt with was kind and helpful but when I sent this portugese authority email copy to them the day of departure they had no clue this would be an issue and they should have!!!! Period full stop but instead told me word for word it's not their responsibility to tell me such things even though you pay them big bucks to get ALL paperwork properly in order and this is one fact and piece of paperwork the portugese authorities insist upon. The owner instead calls me and doubles down on his error instead of acknowledging an obvious oversight. Sure I was initially prepared to return to this place for a second departure because I liked the female vet I dealt with and I had all my own paperwork fully in order after my first trip only months ago but when this unprofessional owner called to double down and tell me "my text messages were rude" I realized what an asshat he and his own company are and went elsewhere of course! I have all copies of my text messages, and email from portugese authorities as proof but of course his lies and distortion of facts are laughable. read more

I have had excellent care from both Dr. Henstra since 2022 and now Dr. Gil. Most recently (today!) I took my cat Iris in for dental cleaning. She had 4 extractions and Dr. Gil communicated with multiple phone calls throughout the process as well as talking to me when I came in to pick her up. He is friendly and knowledgable. Dr. Henstra is and will always be one of the most outstanding, incredible, knowledgeable, empathetic and kind Veterinarians that I have met and most likely will ever meet. She is so highly respected and valued that I will be at a loss when she retires (which is hopefully not for the next 10 years!). I live nowhere near Alhambra, but I will always continue to make the drive because of Dr. Henstra and her team. She found a mass that would have been easily missed which included the oncologist that had trouble finding it in our beloved dog. IN RESPONSE : I want to share some more additional reasons to avoid this place. The owner has been dishonest. No one reached out to follow up with Tuna regarding her reaction to her dosage after over three weeks, and when the owner reached out after Tuna had already passed away, he said it was not his staff's responsibility to do so. No one responded to the voicemail we left on Sunday when we informed the vet that Tuna had passed out. The owner only reached out immediately after I posted my initial Yelp review a full day later. While he was initially apologetic, some of his comments during our call were off-putting, particularly when he suggested we do "our own research" about a feline disease that his vets never implied Tuna had, and that we contact him once we were "less emotional." He responds to one-star reviews claiming he has "proof" through phone recordings, yet he himself acknowledged that his staff should have followed up regarding our concerns about the Tuna during his phone call to her, which we had multiple witnesses for. We also made some recent discoveries. After our cat's intial seizure, we took her to the clinic to recieve testing. Dr. Gill called my roommate a few days later and left a voicemail claiming the results were unremarkable. Well, we just received all of Tuna's medical records and the blood test they ran that day highlights abnormalities that may present when the pet has a liver shunt or other feline infectious diseases. All of which Dr Gill and his team failed to consider and/or mention to my roommate. It's truly disappointing. Maybe our cat couldve lived a longer or healthier life if the staff was more thorough. Instead, she was just put on seizure medication and we were told to watch her weight. If you care about your pets, I recommend finding a vet that genuinely pays attention and values honesty. read more

In general I don't have many issues with the vets, they are attentive, listen carefully, explain what our dog is going through, and know what they are doing. The problem here is the front office staff and poor communication between the doctors and the front office ladies. As I see other reviews that mention the same thing. The front office ladies are very rude, will talk back, push back on questions, when I tell them the doctor said "this" They will say no, the doctor didn't say anything to them. Well, then go and ask for clarification from the doctor, but they refuse and act as if they are vets themselves. On top of that, they have no sense of time management or prioritizing patients or patient needs. Time and time again, they'll be on their personal phones, or talk about non work related things for minutes on end while a customer is waiting to be checked in, or checked out or worse yet waiting to pick up medication. A simple medication, like insulin, takes sometimes 25-30 min to pick up. This is absolutely poor customer service, or worse yet, zero customer care. The problem is that this isn't their business, they don't care if a customer gets upset or doesn't ever come back, because it has no impact on them, they will still come to work and get paid. But it's the vets and the business owner that suffer the consequences. The from office is the face of the business, and here, it leaves a terrible impression on customers. We pay a lot of money to have a good vet take care of our dog, but I don't pay to get this type of treatment by the front office. So unfortunate, but I'll be looking to go elsewhere... read more

My dog needed to have a check-up for his ongoing problems, and they were very accommodating with an appointment that day. The vet was professional and let us know what the problems were in detail and didn't rush us at all. I must have asked 100 questions about everything, and they were so patient in dealing with me. Ever since the new ownership, this veterinarian clinic has gone downhill in communication & level of service. I expect from the change of ownership that many individuals are still getting used to many changes, but there have been too many negative experiences in the last year that I'm finally fed up and searching for a new vet. 1. Wrong Pricing Information: Pricing provided over the phone by the vet stated a $90 price for a Urine Culture, whereas the price was about $145 2. Medication/Billing Transparency: This has gone out the door. Individuals are giving shots to my dog w/o consent or at least notice during doctor visits. I understand they need a booster, but to not even tell the owners what their pet is getting nor mentioning it during the visit is deceptive. + their pricing has gone through the roof, so we expect transparency when they're trying to charge higher prices 3. Communication issues: Vet followed up with us for our Cat and he stated we can cancel a check up with our cat due to her diagnosis, and when we spoke to a staff member over the phone, they had no idea about the cancellation because "the vet doesn't tell them". It could've been handled more professionally and w/o attitude, because how in god's earth are we supposed to know we need to call back to cancel. Either transfer us or take the two extra seconds to tell your front desk to cancel our previously scheduled follow up appointment. The vet receptionist acted dumbfounded at the idea that the vet tells them anything. The least they can do is understand that miscommunication occurred and at least apologize for the mishap. Since we'd already spoken to the clinic vet how are we supposed to even know to call back to cancel a follow up when nothing is mentioned + The prescription for our cat illness medicine has been ready for over a week, and no one notified us of the readiness until we reached out about the follow up appointment to cancel her follow up. 4. Vet tech - Giving out wrong prescription cycles and dosage verbally to give our dog for her post-spay procedure recovery. I understand individuals may want to seem right, but if you don't know the instructions for medicine dosage, read the bottle instead of stating incorrect information. You're going to end up in a lawsuit if your staff cannot give proper dosage and an animal ends up being given the wrong dosage. 5. Additional Unnecessary visits - our cat has a history of "kidney problems" and they told us to come back for a blood pressure test, whereas we'd be charged for that service + the vet fee again. If you already know her issues with Kidney Problems, then we shouldn't have to bring her back for a 2nd visit when you can do your due diligence the first time around with their history. 6. Final straw was when we were told earlier this year, 2024, that our cat who has Kidney problems would have her prescription food approved for a whole year. We tried to order right after asking them to take us off their emailing list and they denied her prescription food. You know our cat has a kidney problem and you risk her health because of your bad policy of keeping prescriptions on file and now are playing with her health. The new Vet seemed like a nice guy and is probably understaffed and needs all the help he can get. However this practice has become a joke and I suggest taking your animals elsewhere unless you want to pay high prices & risk the health of your pets. No hard feelings, but I will NOT be risking my animals' health while this new owner figures out how he wants to cater to the animal community. read more

OMG the prices! I know vet care is getting expensive, but good lord. I need a travel certificate for a rescue dog that was going from here to Oregon. To transport a dog between states a vet has to confirm they have their vaccines and are generally healthy. I took the dog in, and it was $165!! To help a rescue dog get to a new home in Oregon. $60 for the exam. $75 dollars for a paper saying she was healthy. $30 for flea meds. I think the doc maybe spent 5 minutes on the dog, if that... We had all her records, so it is just a matter of looking at them, her and then signing off. $135 to do that? The vet I usually go to in Santa Monica would do it for free, as I am regular client. But I don't expect that obviously. But $60 for an exam is already pretty high, isn't that enough? Another $75 just to issue a paper? And just to mention, you drop the dog off and wait in your car. You do not meet or consult with anyone in person, they are still doing it COVID style as it were. Which again, is fine, but to charge me $60 and not even consult with the dog in person... and then add $75? Just no. I won't be going back here, real shame. The Alhambra area needs affordable vet care. I will say if you are reading this and want something more than just a complaint, there is a non-profit vet in Boyle Heights, look up "Los Angeles Veterinary Center, Boyle Heights". read more

The doctors are fine, but the facilities while they are under construction are *absolutely awful*. The only bathroom for clients is a revolting portopotty next to a dumpster, and the temporary check in counter is literally right next to it. While I waited for my appointment, a sewage truck came to drain the toilet for half an hour, backing up the parking lot (constant honking) and blocking the check in area entirely. Very sad to leave this review. I have had multiple pets as patients of Dr. Henstra over that last 5 years. She is amazing, caring, knowledgeable and supportive! This review is based mainly on the poor transition of ownership that has impacted the quality of service and patient care. Dr. Henstra set the bar very high for this practice and Dr Gil & Dr Sophia have not met it. 1. Communication. There is none. I sat around for an hour and a half waiting for my dogs prescription to be filled after an appointment to be told that they didn't have the medication. 2. Lack of urgency. I've been waiting 4 weeks for my dogs medical records to be emailed to me. I've called multiple times. Each time they say Dr. Gil hasn't sign off on the release. 3. No compassion. Took my dog in to get xrays. He needed to be medicated for it. They administered medication and had me sit in the room alone with him. No one checked in, Never told me what he would he experiencing. My dogs breathing slowed down and he started vomiting. I ran out into the reception and yelled for help. Hardly anyone moved. Then when Dr Gil did come he said oh it's normal the meds are kicking in. No big deal. Guess what I had put my dog down a couple months prior where he had the same effect while he was being euthanized. 4. Poor front desk staff. The ladies at the front desk love to talk back. If you push back or question they try and gaslight you. 5. Saturday business hours are no more. Apparently it's for their work life balance. There's 3 doctors in rotation. How does this make sense? Long story short, we've decided to move on to a new vet. Dr. Henstra is missed and I wish her the best in her future retirement. read more

This was my first visit here and I came here because no one else had space to see my pup for her ear infection. I'm glad I did though, because the front desk worked efficiently and Dr. Gil was so sweet and straightforward with her. I realized this morning at my pup had an ear infection and was frantic to get her seen. Once I got there, the whole process took around an hour, and she left with medicine in her ears and a scheduled follow up. This Veterinary Hospital is extremely unprofessional!!! Came for a travel health certificate, and the entire process here is, again unprofessional, and frustrating. For starters, they made me email my dog's vaccination history in preparation for his appointment, when my mom and sister brought him in, the doctor was oblivious about his vaccinations and almost charged her to do them again.... then the receptionist apparently had an attitude and after being on the phone with my mom, explaining that I emailed the documents weeks in advance, she found them. Where is the communication here?! During their follow up, they handed over the blood test results that my dog needs to travel, with my sisters name misspelled... (there's also a process in changing this medical record from the testing board)/ Then told my sister that I would need to pay a visit and receive the actual health form as I am the person flying with my dog... I get it, not a big deal. Fast forward to when I flew out from Hawaii to finally have the documents given to me on THE APPOINTMENT THAT WAS SCHEDULED TWO WEEKS AGO! So I flew in, brought my dog to the appointment, got his vitals done, and a nurse came in stating that "there's a little problem"..... She proceeds to ask if "I let the vet know that I was flying out of LA on Monday?"... 1. They basically told me that I would need to fly in to get this done. 2. I called to confirm the appointment 3. I have been stating that I was living in Hawaii.... 4. And I did mention that I would be leaving on Monday or Tuesday. I responded saying that I did tell them that I would fly in and attend this appointment and that I would need the health certificate. Long story short, three different vets tell me that the doctor is currently "flying" and that it would take a couple more days for these papers to get done in person One vet tells me that she's calling around to see if someone else could take me in and complete these documents... mind you I already paid over 600 for one blood test and doctor visits... THIS IS NOT MY PROBLEM. Then she makes me wait an hour.... I finally get up and ask to speak to a nurse because at this point my body is reacting and my glucose levels are dropping fast... my dog is a service animal on top of all of this so he's becoming anxious and letting me know that I'm dropping! Another vet comes in and is basically apologizing because "it was her mistake". But she's now telling me that it's hard to get another hospital to see me and that the doctor is actually on paternity leave... she then tells me that he won't be in next week either, and will be getting back in town on Monday! I literally just tell her that I need to leave. She then makes a comment about sensing that I'm getting "anxious" and I remind her that I'm not actually anxious but frustrated! Honestly I'm just overwhelmed with this entire process! This process is already extensive and THE LAST THING anyone needs to stress about is having to leave your own career and your clients to travel and get your feelings played by "providers" when you've already PAID for a service. Now I need to wait, pay to change my flight, and possibly pay for another service elsewhere!.. I should probably sue. It's also been around an hour since leaving the "hospital" and I haven't heard back from ANYONE! DO NOT COME HERE. This is extremely unprofessional! Take your business else. read more

My cat was on her second day of not eating or drinking, and lying in the same position, inert. I thought, this is getting dire, and I need some professional veterinary treatment for this pronto. Little did I know that COVID-19 had caused a surge in patients to veterinarians lately because many had cut their hours and the remaining ones were getting inundated. I called AVH and explained that my cat could die within the day. Then Heather at AVH said that they had a cancellation and so they could work me in. Phew. Turns out that my cat ingested something toxic because her liver and kidney were inflamed and struggling. Dr. Henstra did thorough blood testing and patiently described her thinking and her findings, while many people with pets waiting for their turn to meet with her. Stressful for her, I'm sure, but I really really appreciated it. (Btw, due to COVID-19, all human visitors to AVH must wear masks and waiting extends out to the parking lot to maintain social distancing. There are trees donning over seating so you can wait in the shade. Actually the animals seem to like more being outdoors.) I so appreciated Dr. Henstra's thoroughness and clear wisdom and knowledge from her decades of experience. Additional staff showed me how to force feed her with a syringe, which is totally not pleasant for anyone involved but absolutely necessary. My cat, Essie, has a low chance of making it out of this alive given the factors. But she is a strong spirit and so I will dutifully give her all medicine prescribed according to dosage and pray for her. She is truly family and I want her to stick around. If it weren't for AVH, I wouldn't even have this chance or hope. She would die before my eyes and I would feel like I deserve to die for not doing enough about it. On the way home, Essie curled her paws around my finger when I stuck it through the metal grate of her cat carrier. To me, it was a sign that she understood we were doing something about her condition. She appreciated it and got hope too. Thank you AVH for tirelessly helping to fight the good fight for Essie's life! Let's hope she continues to be the exceptional cat that she is and makes it. / / / Update: Looks like my cat is going to make it! She is eating on her own now and using the litterbox again! I've been coming to the vet for 12 years, Dr. H really cares about animals and provided great service but it seems the standard of customer service has declined. On my last visit, they had me waiting in the car over an hour and a half, I had to call and tell them to bring my dog so I could pick my kids up from school. Then, when I asked how to pay, they said they will contact me. The problem is they never called or sent me a bill and as a single, working mom (9-5), I got busy and honestly forgot. They called a month later to collect and we're very aggressive and rude over a $60 bill. Yes, they deserve their money. That is not the problem. The problem is you don't have a system to bill and then are going to be rude with me because your system does not work. I will take my money to a vet who cares for both the animals and customers by providing them with the respect and decency. Thanks for the response, Dr. G. I paid my bill and I am sorry that in the throes of life, I didn't take care of the bill. I was considering erasing my review, but after I read your response, I realized my initial reaction was correct. You are willing to defame and belittle someone over a $60 bill. Not good customer service and not a place I want to spend my money. A little humility can go a long way, so I will humbly take my money and patron another veterinarian. read more
