Tomorrow is my wedding day. I went to Alicia's for eyelash extensions. While I didn't love the final product, I figured I just needed to get used to the look. Unfortunately 4 hours later, so many of the clustered lashes (I thought they were supposed to be individuals) had fallen out that I had bald spots on my lids. I frantically called the salon to see what could be done; I expected that since I'd paid $130 plus 20% tip a few hours ago, surely they would make this right, especially since I was less than 24 hours away from being a bride!! Instead I was told I could come back tomorrow for a $45 fee. I cannot express my level of disappointment. I will never return to this establishment. read more

I generally do not like getting my hair cut. I have some scars & lumps on my scalp that are just a bit embarrassing to me, and it's always awkward to go to a new place & have to explain - usually in front of a packed salon - after the hairdresser loudly asks the equivalent of "what's up with that?" However, the time had come to get it done & while I love the place I usually get my hair cut, it's not worth it to make a special trip to Mechanicsville just for that. Anyway. Alicia's was recommended to me by my cousin (and had the highest Yelp rating of any salon near me). On arrival I was a little confused - the signage on the building simply says "A Salon & Day Spa." Since there were no other hair places in the area, I knew it had to be the place, but being a newcomer to the area, it was a bit confusing. The salon has a boutique area right up front with lots of shiny baubles for sale. I'm not terribly interested in things like that so I couldn't give you any specifics. The servuce area in the back seemed to have a lot of knick-knacks & the like scattered around, but it wasn't over the top. It also advertises & has areas set up for massages and mani/pedis (I will more than likely be going back to get my toes done soon), so you could ostensibly book a whole spa package for yourself if that's your thing. But I was here for a haircut. Amanda was my stylist, and after a consultation of what I wanted (I NEVER know what to do with my hair) and what she thought would be best, we began. About 30 minutes later, my hair was washed, conditioned, cut, dried, and styled, and it looked 100x better than it had before. During the prices Amanda showed me the products she was using and described what they were for, in case I wanted to go out & purchase them later. I was offered something to eat or drink several times. Best of all, Amanda assessed where the lumps & bumps on my scalp were & worked around them - without saying a word. I really appreciated that. The whole experience was relaxing & very pleasant. On check out, they have a printed calendar that describes a special that the salon runs for each day of the month (also available on their website). I also snagged a 20% off coupon for my first visit that knocked off about $8 from the cost (also on their website). All in all, a great first experience at a salon that I more than likely will be returning to. read more

From the moment of walking into the salon until leaving, the entire experience was completely negative. To begin, the receptionist was short with me and unfriendly. Then, my stylist, Kinley, came back to tell me she double booked and that I would need to wait a half hour. After waiting over 30 min, she called me back and told me she would give me a free extra treatment of Olaplex for the inconvenience. After I went back, I wanted to go over prices before getting started as I was just informed at the front there is not a set price. It depends on the stylist's experience. Anyways, she started privately calculating what it would be for full highlights and it came to over 240. For partial it was around 180. I could not believe it! I told her it said on the website 120+ for highlights. They are bait and switching clients and I feel it needs to be known. She said this was including the services of washing, adding toner and styling. In other words: washing, styling and toning comes to 120$. I asked if I could just do the highlights as it was not necessary for me to have the extra services. She said that I could not eliminate any service because if I left with just highlights and no styling it would "make her look bad". She cared more about her reputation than her own client's experience. I asked if instead of the extra "free" 30$ Olaplex treatment (I have the same exact product at home) if I could just take the 30$ off my highlights. She said "no". Then, she embarrassed me in front of the entire salon saying *in a loud voice* "it seems like you weren't prepared to pay this much!" I will obviously never return nor recommend this salon to anyone. There are plenty of other places in the area with reasonable pricing, friendly staff, professionalism and talent. read more

I called on a Monday, was booked for an appointment on a Tuesday. I chose this salon because it had decent ratings. They quoted me $175 for a level 4 stylist (very experienced) and I told the lady on the phone what I wanted and explained I have A Lot of hair! When I walked in, the feel was not high end, there is stuff cluttering ever corner. Jack-of-all-Trades, master-of-none kinda feel. Makeup, massage's, nails, hair, pedicures... But what threw it off the most was the purses. I was greeted and taken back immediately. The girl that did my hair was funny, and new to the salon. I watched her tangle my hair with the dye brush but reverted to the assurance 'she's a level 4.' When washing my hair she said 'I'm gonna do a deep conditioning.' When she cut it, there were like two snips and it was done. She didn't let me see my hair until she was done straightening then completely curling it. I am always suspicious when someone curls my hair after a dye... It's like when you walk into a house and you smell air freshener, what's it hiding! When I went to pay I was handed a bill for $275. As I pushed my eyeballs back into their sockets I asked what I was being charged for. In addition to the extra charges for my extra hair from the original quote (which always happens to me no matter what I say), I was being charge for a toner and a conditioning. The conditioning was not posed as a question earlier, I thought it was a normal part of the wash, she was just telling me what she was doing. $40. The toner charge was outrageous $35! You ask for a color, you expect it to be right, not to get charged extra for a toner if the color isn't processed right originally! The stylist took most of the extra charges off and was apologetic for the 'misunderstanding.' She asked the manager what she could do, but the manager/owner never came over. Granted she was with a client. But I made it quite clear that I was looking for the salon that I was going to visit every 10 weeks or less... I wouldn't have wanted me to leave unsatisfied. I tipped the stylist and made another apt with her. But the next morning I couldn't straighten my hair. Wait, my hair was straight!! The color that was making it look wavy because it is spotty and in consistent. In the end I paid $255 for something I might have gotten done better at great clips. Needless to say, I don't intend to return. read more

I had an awful experience here this past week, not only once, but twice... in 1 weeks, with 2 different stylists..... The second time I literally cried in the chair and am currently trying to find another salon to "fix" what the stylists at Alicia's have done. I had mid shoulder length hair and came in for a trim and some long layers. I had to have her cut one side 3 times while I was there because it was so uneven. My layers were up to my ear and choppy. I went home and straightened so I could have a better idea of what it looked like. I was horrified and made another appointment to have it fixed. I went back and was placed with another stylist who told me that my hair was a mess, that one side was still an inch longer and my layers were so short and choppy, and I only had layers on one side, not the other side and not the back!! This lady just made things worse and after an hour I was in tears and gave up. I still have no layers in the back like I asked for, my hair is still uneven and my hair length is now above my shoulders! I was afraid to let her continue to cut so I left. This was an awful experience for me, not only once but twice with two stylists and I will not be returning. For the amount you pay here for a cut... this should not happen at all... much less twice in one week. read more

Amanda has been my stylist since we moved here this summer. She's always open to looking at photos I bring in and works meticulously to get the cut just right. She offers great recommendations for color and cut while growing out my pixie, which is not an easy thing to do! I never feel like she's rushing through the cut to get to the next customer. Used a groupon for Mani- Pedi. The place is very nice looking and kept up. Although the ladies were nice the lady whom attended my nails pretty much just painted them. Nothing major ... Got a groupon massage here today - the massuese (female) was nice and did a pretty good job - she was very friendly. The treatment rooms are tiny and in the front of a salon so you can hear a little bit out there during your massage, but they do have soothing music playing in the treatment room to try to drown it out. I would definitely go back for another service. read more

I have been a client since I moved to this area in 2010. I also just recently got my hair done by Kasey Y and she did an AMAZING job. I also almost told her "i love you" while she shampooed my hair. It was SO RELAXING! I'm very weary of getting my hair done each time, but they ALWAYS make sure I look fabulous at the end of the day. Their hours are convenient to my work life and they are always able to accommodate me last minute, which I really appreciate because it's so hard for me to find time to come in. I've also had massages done by Lisa before and she is also AWESOME. You get what you pay for with Alicia's and I appreciate their service and for always making me look and feel beautiful! These guys were awesome! I took three of my girlfriends here as part of my birthday celebration. We all purchased the groupon for the mani/pedi package. I called in advance to make our appointments and was greeted with true hospitality on the phone. They were able and willing to accommodate all four of us at the same time and said that the groupons would be no problem. When we showed up, everyone was so sweet and they got us started and finished in a very timely manner. We were offered drinks and cookies and overall treated like queens. It was a perfect birthday experience and I'd happily go back (with or without a groupon!). I definitely recommend this place to anyone who wants good pampering! read more

Alicia has cut and colored my hair off and on for over 20 years. I have finally made the decision that I must find another salon and move on and never look back. It's so hard and daunting to find a new stylist so I have basically accepted average hair for so long. I have stayed simply because it is convenient, easy to get an appointment (hmmmmmmmm) and I know what I am going to get even if it is not stellar at least I know it won't be totally butchered. (hence the 2 star vs. 1 star rating) Well I want more for my hair now and am no longer willing to pay outrageous prices for less than average work. Seriously it cost me $275 for a cut and color and the receptionist has the nerve to ask if I would like to add a tip. ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME??? Alicia barely did anything with my hair relying on her assistant to do most of the work. She very quickly foiled my hair and then sat me in a manicure chair in the dark to process. I sat there forever. Finally done, someone else took me over for the shampoo. Had to wait there with wet hair while Alicia was done talking with someone. Then she spent about 5 minutes cutting my hair and shuffled me off to her assistant to have it dried. The assistant does not know how to dry and style my hair. It was way over processed and frizzy and the cut looked like something I got at a cheap chain place. I asked the assistant to have Alicia check my hair, which she did, and I told her I wasn't pleased with it and that it was too frizzy. She told her assistant the reason it was too frizzy is because she didn't dry it properly and didn't close the shaft when she blew it dry causing it to be frizzy. THEN WALKED AWAY AND DID NOTHING TO FIX MY HAIR. Too busy I guess. btw...she uses thinning sheers instead of scissors when texturizing my hair. I hate those things. It is very hard to pinpoint areas when she is just pulling up hair and hacking away at it with those. That is not how she used to do it. It takes more time to do it with scissors which is why I guess she chooses to do it with those thinning sheers. The result is not as good. Yes, they do charge you for things you don't ask for. I didn't realize that.(probably why the cost is $275 vs $175 at all other salons for a cut and highlight) They assume sell and not ask you if you want to pay for a deep conditioner or a toner or whatever. They say, "I am going to do XYZ service on you" and then charge you for it. They make it seem like it is part of the treatment when it is actually and expensive add on. Alicia seems to be very money hungry. I now feel like the victim of "upsell or cross sell". I have been to very expensive upscale salons in the west end and paid less than at Alicia's for much better work. They only sell Redken and Pureology products. These two brands are not known to be the best products in the industry but rather profitable to the stylist. Pureology cost $38 for 9oz. shampoo and Redken is about $22. Neither product works for my hair. I like Lanza shampoo and conditioner. Same price point but my hair is better off. Don't mind spending the money for awesome results. Bottom line here is don't even get started with Alicia. You will not be happy I promise you. She is way too busy with everything else (mainly fashion shows) but your hair. If I must go out of my way and travel out of Chester for a decent salon so be it. I am not willing to sacrifice good hair just because a salon is close to my home. By the way......the big black Escalade parked in the first spot by the door belongs to Alicia. That right there tells me what kind of person she is. I would think she would reserve that spot for her customer (who is paying her bills). Does your business coach tell you to park there? read more

I interviewed awhile ago for a part time receptionist, during the whole interview all the manager talked about was rumors and gossip about other businesses and talked bad about every other salon in the area. It was pretty shameful and that's not how you do business. Needless to say I never went back and I def would not go there ESP to air out your dirty laundry or else the whole town will know about it. read more

I went here most of 2017. Haircuts were solid. Highlights and color were amazing. However, the prices were just too high for me. And they like to push various hair products. I started to be anxious about going because I knew they were going to be selling me the whole time. Let me start by saying the SPA looks wonderful, the front desk staff are the nicest people and they will bend over backwards for you. But that is where it ends. Any mother out there knows how hard it is to get a family together to do a family portrait, and how long you have to wait to get in. So the Friday before our family day I decide to get mine and my daughters hair done. Mine colored (to cover the grey, lol) and my daughter a nice cut for the pictures. I had heard good things about this spa so decided to book. I called in to get an appointment and the only stylist available was this girl Abby Shreve, so we booked. We arrived and were greeted by the front desk staff with a smile and hello. And it all goes down here from there. Abby and I talk about the color and what I was looking for, the deer in the headlights look should had told me to run. If there is a brain between those ears you might wonder. So after I explained that I didn't want dark, stick to my natural color but really want to cover the grey. She acted like umm OK, I think I know what you want. Think!?!?! Well the first round was 2 shades darker than my natural color and she did not get to the roots and grey was showing through. Now over an hour and a half into this process. Another girl takes me to wash my hair so we can recolor it to a lighter version like I had asked in the beginning. She starts my daughters hair cut. I instruct her to take 2 niches off and even it all out. 2 inches is NOT half the length. A straight line is straight across, not a V. WTF!!! SO when I say something, wait for it, deer in the head lights, oh, I'm sorry. Would you like me to fix it?!?!?! Fix it, you took 4 inches already how do you fix this?!?! I'm so angry right now I can speak. My hair is so dark I look like vampire, my daughter has multi-length hair in a V back now. After the second attempt to lighten the color now 4 hours later, $300 bucks spent I was done. Went to my sisters house bought a box product and canceled my family portrait the next day. If they ever try to book you with Abby Shreve RUN RUN RUN. I also notice it looks like not one Stylist is over the age of 19 all wearing skin tight leggings, which each is own. But have some class and try not to make them so tight when you bend over your butt shows through your clothes. I WILL NEVER BE BACK, this girl should have her license revoked! The staff on hand for massages and facials are great, but the atmosphere is bad. You can hear the top 40 they play in the salon through the rooms, and you can often hear loud talking etc, as well. They try to cover it up with relaxing music but there's really only so much you can do. The salon services are good. It isn't very relaxing having the spa rooms right next to the main salon room and waiting area/reception. If they moved to a new location it would be definitely 4 stars. read more

When I arrived they told me that I had to spend MORE MONEY (Like $60 MORE to do a Conditioner $ a color) to make sure it would turn out the way I wanted it to be. I LOVE Taylor!!! She is so sweet and amazingly talented! When my hair was completely screwed up by another hairdresser one week before I was to leave for my vacation of a lifetime Taylor saved the day and worked me into her schedule. I was very nervous because I had never had her work on my hair. My friend suggested that I contact her. Taylor brought me to tears because she had done exactly what I had been trying to get out of the other hairdresser for years plus some. She doesn't do anything that will damage your hair, makes sure to do all the treatments in the shop to keep your hair healthy and teaches you what to do when you are at home. I saw her for my second visit today and she once again knocked it out of the park. She put me to sleep washing my hair. :) Taylor is the absolute best!!!! read more

While traveling for work, I went to a salon that butchered my hair (and that's putting it nicely.) I'd requested a hair straitening treatment to help with frizz from the humid summer weather and left with a painful red, itchy scalp from a chemical burn. My hair quite literally snapped off, falling into my hands while brushing or down the drain showering, leaving only an inch or two in certain areas. Ultimately, I lost over 50% of my hair through breakage and the remaining half was so dry, damaged and burnt as if it had been set on fire. Fortunately, I had a friend recommend a consultation at Alicia's Salon & Day Spa. After a creative haircut to try and even out the length, Brazilian blowout to assist with the texture and extensions to make up for the loss (thank GOD for extensions) I left the salon looking like this. Although it will take years for full healthy hair recovery and to have naturally long hair again, it turned out 10x better than I expected. Alicia Bosher has found a customer for life- I can't recommend her highly enough.
