Though I'm no stranger to the gym, my knowledge about health and fitness was lacking. I got minimal returns for my efforts and suffered one injury after another; I had extreme and unsustainable diets; and poor posture. I've always had reservations with working with a trainer. A few common reasons I told myself were "why pay so much money when I can just go on the internet and try the latest burn-fat in 90 days program" or "they don't really care about my progress, these trainers just want my money". I'm sure you've all felt something similar at some point about trainers. Nonetheless I decided to at least give it a try. Thanks to the power of social media, I stumbled upon Kraken training on Instagram. I was intrigued so I reached out to them and came in for a consultation. Josko put me through the standard movement test and I got some feedback about my form. I was open about the fact that I was still shopping around for coaches. She is very personable and I am constantly inspired to be better. I am always amazed at how much she knows and how she always has a different variations depending on how I am feeling that day. Training with Corine has been an absolute pleasure. I completely trust her to spot me in and through difficult skills/positions. I have been looking for a way to maintain strength and body tone for general health reasons and to…read moreenable improved performance without injury when playing sports, ski touring, skiing, mountain biking etc. I've found gyms quite boring over the years and very rarely maintain motivation for longer than a couple of weeks. I participate in bootcamp type workouts, which I find more engaging and fun, however I was looking for an alternative workout that I could do at home and get maximum return on my time. Having followed a primal type life style (diet) for the past year I stumbled across Kettlbell workouts when reading Tim Ferriss's 'The 4-Hour Body', it seemed to fit my need. Next problem find a trainer to learn the skill, I didn't want to injure myself as it seemed form was critical in effectiveness and to prevent injury when doing kettlebell workouts. I was searching for some time for someone that could train me in kettlbell technique in the Vancouver, BC area. Then I came across http://www.rocofit.com and Rosa, although she was living in London, UK, she was planning on scheduling some kettlebell workshops in Vancouver, I was first encouraged by what I read on Rosa's website & blog. In the session, Rosa took me through a series of stretching type exercises to prevent injury during and after the kettlebell workout, these exercises were quite different and felt more effective than the usual type stretches you are shown, including the use of a foam roller to 'self-massage' trigger points, wow, never used one before but placed my order for one right away. Following the warm up we moved onto the basic movements of kettlebell: the stance, tightening the core, the leg drive, the dead lift and the basic swing. Some of this was done without weights, or with light kettlebells. The swings and lifts were practiced increasing the size of the kettlebell as I could demonstrate good form. For some of the moves it took some great coaching and pointers from Rosa as I naturally had poor technique, I can still here Rosa's voice telling me to lower my shoulders :). I got all I wanted and more from the workshop with Rosa. Rosa added a lot more value to my session than just showing me how to swing a kettlebell, I really liked Rosa's balanced perspective on health and fitness, and philosophy on personal training. Would I recommend Rosa for kettlebell training, absolutely!, she was extremely motivating with the right balance of push and coaching good technique. Turns out Rosa has relocated back to Vancouver from the UK, so if you're looking for a great personal instructor go sign up for a workshop of some personal training from Rosa, a great investment. Additionally I was also impressed with the gym that Rosa holds her training sessions at, Ground Work Athletics http://groundworkathletics.ca/, I had to catch a flight to Toronto right after my kettlebell session, the gym was well equipped with clean showers, towels, hair dryers, etc.

Kettlebells combine strength, cardio and flexibility training. Rosa's sessions are inspiring because every week you learn something new. I started at 17 weeks but you can join anytime, so long as you've got your dr or midwife's ok. The classes are a mix of aerobic/cardio and strength/light weight exercises and are paced for any fitness/pregnancy level. Nothing can compare to the atmosphere, vibe and all around healthy environment Fit 4 Two provides. As well as the added benefit of being around other preggies interested in staying healthy during pregnancy, Fit 4 Two has been an invaluable experience for me as a first timer.

I tried out Kelsey's strength training class as I have never done strength training as a class…read more Before starting, Kelsey made sure to ask fi there were any injuries or exercise that bothered me or I didn't like to do. The group was five of us, everyone at different fitness levels. We started as a group and then kind of splintered off into two groups and then individually as we progressed through the workout. The focus of the day I went was hamstrings and there were some exercises I had never seen before as well as others I was more familiar with. I think it's good that people can go at their own pace. There was also a lot of recovery time between sets. The class was a mix of floor exercises, hand weights and then using the machines for rowing etc. The gym itself is interesting as it's a common gym that I think personal trainers can rent or use? There was actually a large variety of equipment and at least doubles of every machine. Towels are provided. Water fountain and bottle refill are also available. There is one bathroom or change room but it requires a key fob to use and was not located within the gym. I think if people have specific goals, it would be worth it to schedule a private personal training session. If overall fitness I'd the objective, I think the group classes are good.
