Alitalia planes lined up at FCO
    Bruce K.

Alitalia is part of the SkyTeam alliance with Delta and KLM and Air France. I think Delta owns a pretty significant piece of the airline. As such, they codeshare together so that you can buy a Delta ticket and actually be flying Alitalia. I was well aware that I was on Alitalia from New York to Rome to Palermo and then from Palermo to Rome. Both arriving flights got the gate late enough that I had no time for wandering the Fiumicino airport. I did not get a chance to visit the Alitalia lounges. I barely had enough time to visit a restroom before having to get onto the next flight. On the plus side, my luggage made the connection. Boarding was done properly with a zone for SkyPriority (me, because I'm a Diamond in Delta's SkyMiles program) and another zone for economy passengers. This allowed me the benefit of getting on the plane and settling into my seat a little sooner. I did not have to fight for overhead baggage room which was pleasant. My planes were clean and other than being delayed getting to Rome, more or less on time. I certainly didn't misconnect despite the use of a jetbridge and transfer bus to get from the hard stand to the terminal. Because who doesn't like carrying their luggage down a tall flight of stairs? I would choose Alitalia again but next time I would make sure to have well more than an hour to change planes here at FCO! [Review 12850 overall, 165 of 2020.]

Two stars only for the very nice staff onboard, as well as the cleanliness of the aircraft. The WORST flight of my life, all due to the seat headrest design. I'm not far off when I'm telling you 50% of the plane was squirming claustrphobically...all to avoid the dreaded head rest. My neck was propped forward for 15 hot hours. I'm also less than five feet and I was smashed and sardined into my row. Nice people, nice plane but for the love of God...please remove those Torture devices!

On our return to trip to Los Angeles from Rome, we had a flight booked with Air France. We were surprised to see that for the first part of the trip (Rome to CDG), we would be flying on an Alitalia airplane. Turns out that they had a partnership at the time. Anyways, we made it back to LAX in one piece. Unfortunately, we did not make it back with all of our baggage. Our two missing luggages did not make it back to our home until several days later. Do not know if it was fully Alitalia's fault or Air France's mistake. So, they got to share the blame. Other than the missing baggages, the trip on the Alitalia flight was fine and comfy.

I have to say, my experience really wasn't that awful with this airline. I didn't check any bags (that may have had something to do with it) and flew from Rome-Milan-NYC-Orlando. The only hiccup was around the tickets not all being printed out at once but that was likely because I booked through Expedia. The food on the plane was airline food (it's what you would typically expect) and the staff was a little standoffish (as seems common in Italian culture) but it wasn't unbearable. They have free wine on the flight and the inflight entertainment from Milan - JFK was outstanding... Current movies to watch gratis as well. The seats were clean and comfy. I felt like it was important to post this because there were so many others that had poor experiences. My advice is to set expectations low on food quality and service and don't check a bag :) hope this helps!

I will never fly this airline again. I wish I had known prior to booking our flights. The planes were very old, the food was disgusting and the staff on board the plane were rude. The staff at LAX were great and provided my travel partner with a wheelchair and got us to the gate quickly. Unfortunately, that was where the customer service ended. But, it was our flight there and we were excited to get to our Italy destination and so I thought.....maybe we just got them on a bad day. 11 days later......the nightmare flight home. Again, the plane was terribly old and outdated, my seat pouch was ripped so would not hold anything, there was some weird steel box under the seat in front of me so I was not able to put my legs together for 14 hours and the food was literally unrecognizable. We could not eat it. We survived for 14 hours on bread, crackers and anything that was pre packaged. I had a terrible stomach ache when I got off the plane to our destination and I was even sicker when I got off the plane going home. The staff disappeared for hours at a time and we were essentially on our own. I never could figure out how to work the TV screen which was ancient. I felt horribly bad for a woman with a broken leg in our row. She paid an exorbatent amount of money for an early flight home and was promised a seat with extra leg room so she could elevate her broken leg. They did not provide this to her and she had to sit in a cramped seat for 14 hours. She was an older woman and I felt terrible for her. No ice, no comfort, nothing. This airline needs to call it and just go out of business and send the planes to the airplane cemetery.

Alitalia airlines: the wings of Italy. Or so, I thought. Really I did. Alitalia airlines is the major airline in Italy, serving many destinations in and around Italy, as well as many destinations in Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and the United States. Alitalia is apart of the Skyteam alliance, which is the international airline group which Delta airlines is currently apart of. My experience here was an interesting one. I did not know that Etihad regional airlines was, when I bought the ticket months in advance. I thought it was a stand alone airline, but soon discovered something different when checking into my flight. As it turns out, Alitalia is the blanket airline for Etihad regional airlines, dba Darwin Airlines. fyi, Etihad Airlines, a Swiss regional airline, needed to be ticketed under Alitalia airlines for travel. I actually tried to find the ticket kiosk for Etihad in Rome Leonardo da Vinci Fumicino airport, but to no avail. After checking the Alitalia departures and confirming with an airline official, I was glad to make my flight out of Roma and onward to Geneva Switzerland! It was a little interesting to get ticketed by Alitalia airlines, but boarding an Etihad regional jet. With the era of code sharing these days with the airlines, it was clear that anything and everything is just a flying headache at times. For the most part, the experience with Etihad and Alitalia airlines was a good and positive one. Although there was an hour delay, the flight to Geneva Switzerland from Rome was very nice - even on a turboprop plane. Flying across the Mediterranean Sea was quite lovely and over the Swiss Alps was quite stunning too, especially in late October where the mountain peaks are covered in snow already! The service on board was okay, as with any other short flight. The flight was less than 3 hours, so we just was serves drinks to pass the time. Flying on a turboprop plane makes me nervous at times, but it got me there in one piece. Takeoff and landing was smooth enough. For the most part, the reservations were done through Etihad airlines website after doing research for best prices through kayak.com. The prices were fair and quoted in euros. It was about €149 for a one way segment, which wasn't too bad. I was surprised that I didn't have to show my passport upon arrival in Switzerland or go through any sort of customs. Europe is awesome this way. During the boarding process, we made our way down the jet bridge and into an awaiting shuttle. This brought us to the plane, which was on a stretch of Tarmac that was on the far side of the airport. I guess the good spots were taken by all the major European and global players. Or maybe it was a turboprop plane and didn't require a jet bridge. The boarding process reminded me of my experience in NYC - LaGuardia airport. The service here with gate agents were nice and fast. Nothing like it! If your travels to and from Rome, Italy goes through Alitalia & Etihad regional airlines, do consider them, versus driving or train, as they're pretty reasonable as far as pricing and getting you where you want to go. Pack light, as these regional jets are quite small and you might need to do a gate check for those oversized luggage! Safe travels! I even gave them my frequent flier credentials, which allowed me to board early. Let's just say, for a turboprop plane, it wasn't too glamourous. No first class service. Support local! B

Lost luggage (for 15 days) finally arrives and Alitalia manages to make it worse by breaking the wheel off. Screw this airline.

They then made an announcement that we were to get off the plane, but that a bus was waiting to take us to Florence. We all departed and got our bags. There were some workers who called all of us over, and lead us through the airport. They told us to wait there and the bus would pick us up in 30 minutes. We even got a boarding pass on the TAP app for the bus. Thirty minutes go by, then an hour. All of the workers at this point have left. So it is just our plane waiting in the airport for a bus that they told us was coming. Eventually an airport worker shows up and tells us there is no bus. He is not of much help due to the fact that he didn't work for air Portugal. It is around 2 am at this point. He told us we could get a hotel and that Air Portugal would PROBABLY reimburse us, but he did not know for sure since he didn't work for them. We ended up staying the whole night in the airport and rented a car the next morning to drive ourselves to Florence. We never received any communication from TAP Air Portugal regarding alternate transportation, accommodation, or what happened to the mysterious bus they told us was coming. I understand that they cannot control the weather. But to lie to an entire plane full of people and say that there is a bus waiting for us, lead us to wait for said bus, send us a new boarding pass, and then not have any communication when the bus never came is insane. We could have arranged alternate transportation ourselves earlier or at least went to a hotel at a decent hour (not 2 am when the airport worker finally came and found us).
