Obsessed with my hair and Yadira. I only had a trim but with as much as my family moves I've had some bad cuts. Knowing how to cut hair is a true art! For it to lay nicely and feel good it's not just a pair of scissors doing the work. Yadira listened to what I wanted for my cut. My hair feels so fresh and lays beautifully imo. I don't love the way the phones are answered. I wasn't sure if it was ai or a real person. Felt very scripted. No shade towards Alkali it's a beautiful salon and I'm sooo happy with my cut. I can't say enough good things about Alkali and especially my stylist Brittany! I'm always welcomed with a friendly smile at the front desk when I walk in. They really make me feel like they want me there and they aren't just taking my name down. I've been seeing Brittney for almost 2 yrs now. She's gotten to know my hair so well and knows what works and what doesn't. She's given me some suggestions on products that would benefit me as well and I've taken all of her professional advise to heart and my hair has improved so much! As I age, my hair texture has changed a lot and Brittany has worked some magic to make me love it even with all the new gray growth. I love how this salon also books two appointments out so I can always plan and know when my next appointments are. If I need to change it, I can also use their online appointment calendar and easily make changes if necessary. There is a big parking lot available so there's no issue with finding parking close by and a little plus is that it's location right next door to Louie and Honeys is the perfect opportunity to grab one of their famous cinnamon rolls or a coffee before or after your appointment! Exactly how have I never rated the salon I've been going to for maybe 7 years, in their OG location? First, nothing but absolute perfection. Easy to make appointments online or with the incredible front desk staff. I've been going to Colleen for 7 years now, and it's always incredible quality, a great cut, color, shampoo, change, bang trim: you name it! My most recent cut in the photos. You're going to pay for quality, and I get that isn't everyone's cup of tea. I've been keeping a really good secret, mostly because I wanted to keep Brittney to myself... It takes a LONG time for me to find someone I can trust with my hair. I don't mean if someone can do a decent reasonable cut or color per a couple of pictures I show them. I mean trust someone for their opinion and taste and that what they might recommend will be even better than what I came in thinking I wanted. When I lived in Chicago, it took me dozens of hairstylists before I found someone who could roll with all my phases in my 20s and early 30s (bald, blonde, pixie, etc) and make them each look great. I lived in San Diego for over 3 years and only found someone I liked by the end of that time. Brittney has been one of those unicorn stylists for me, where she not only has really great attention to detail, and really listens to what I'm looking for and why, but also then checks and works with my hair to make sure the cut and color are right for me. I've never left the studio disliking something we've done to my hair. Indeed, usually a week after I'm even happier than I was walking out of the salon after the finished blowout. Examples: going through color swatches and asking me about what I've had done before to my hair previously to find a subtle glaze that was exactly what I was going for - still professional for work but low maintenance, figuring out just how much layering is right for me given I like to put my hair up but it gets greasy and weighed down easily, etc. When I saw a notice that her prices would be going up months ago, I thought to myself - good for her, she deserves it!!! Pay her what she's worth. Brittney always accomplishes all the wonderful things you hope for out of a salon visit in terms of TLC, but really goes the extra mile in her work and it shows. She will be one of the people I miss most in Winston both as an amazing hairdresser, and as a phenomenal person. Oh yeah, general details about Alkali I've always appreciated: -text reminders about appointments 2 days in advance (even if I have the google calendar reminder myself, it's still nice to have) -parking is easy and always an excuse to visit the shops/cafe -kept my card on file so I could just charge that and add tip on venmo to my stylist -all the cute little accessories and A+ Oribe/Davines products they carry (but I've never had any pressure to buy anything from anyone) read more

I really like my stylist, and feel she delivers a quality result (cut and color)--I'd give her 5 stars. That said, the pricing at the salon is high (the junior stylist rate is $100/hour, I think), isn't as transparent or awesome as advertised, and I don't care for the hourly rate strategy. Unlike attorneys, who charge by the billable hour in six-minute increments, and only for work performed on project-related tasks, Alkali effectively charges clients for the time their hair color spends processing when no other services are being rendered. My stylist could be eating lunch, in other words, and I'm paying for that time. (In fact, she's never anywhere to be seen while I'm processing.) The salon argues that this actually enables clients to squeeze in more services, and get more bang for their buck, but I haven't found that to be the case. My stylist doesn't offer any additional services that could be performed during processing, nor have I ever been offered any extra services that could fit into my booking while at the salon; any additional services that could be performed during that time (if there are any) would presumably be done by someone else, and would thus incur separate charges (for that person's time). What's more, I don't want any additional services. So, in effect, I'm paying for phantom, theoretical add-on services I neither want nor receive. The pricing model is not a boon for me, therefore, despite the sales pitch. For what it's worth, I've never seen anyone at the salon receive any other services while their color is processing either. I suspect this is a feature rather than a bug for the salon, as it enables the salon to lock in hourly prices--prices that, presumably, bake-in the costs of various services that could, theoretically, be performed during that hour--without necessarily delivering anything above and beyond the services clients would otherwise book (and pay for) à la carte under a service-based pricing model. Just a guess. Tipping isn't required (of course, tipping is never required), but you will be prompted to tip at the end of your appointment. I've always tipped 20% at other salons, but I think prompting for tips is inappropriate in this context. The hourly rates here are high, and other professionals who charge by the hour don't ask for or accept tips. You don't tip your plumber, your electrician, or your attorney, and they don't put you on the spot by asking you to do so. Services at the salon can add up quickly, especially if you get your hair colored. Estimating what your appointment is going to cost in advance can be difficult for first-timers, as well as for those changing up their services, which can make for an unpleasant surprise at the end of your visit. It can also be difficult to schedule yourself online unless you are rebooking a previous appointment with no alterations because doing so requires you to know which "Tech" or "Chem" or "Proc" selection applies to your desired/needed services, and no descriptions of these are provided on the booking platform. Yes, there are descriptions of each on the salon's website, but it's not necessarily self-evident which option applies to you at a given time (or how you might be able to swap one service for another to meaningfully reduce your service costs). This is unfortunate because, aside from speaking with your stylist directly, the online platform is the easiest way to get an estimate of your service costs. Not everyone feels comfortable discussing dollars and cents with their stylist, frankly. Even if you are, there might not be a lot your stylist can do/advise to reduce costs aside from drastically modifying your services or switching you to a more junior stylist. As stylists get more education, they move up the payscale. In theory, this is appropriate. The challenge for me as a consumer is that I'm not necessarily benefited by certain advances in my stylist's know-how, or additional certifications she might receive. I might never need specialist services, like color correction, for example. But because pricing is based on hourly rates rather than services, and that skillset might increase her rate, I could end up paying more (possibly a lot more) for my regular old services every time I sit in her chair. I'm very picky about my hair so I continue to pay the high prices Alkali charges despite feeling the sting. But I also space my appointments out more than I used to, which helps keep my yearly costs in check. And, every quarter, I evaluate whether or not I want to alter my services, or spread my appointments out even more, to bring my costs down further. If it came to the point where I felt I couldn't continue to work with my current stylist given her pricing, I would leave the salon; I wouldn't continue to pay the same or a similar price for a different, less experienced stylist, as Alkali recommends the budget-conscious do. Alkali itself isn't worth it. read more

I hope the manager reads this review!! If I could give a zero for customer service I would. I made two appointments in person. First appointment was scheduled for my 6 yr old daughter and I told them this would be her first big salon haircut for Tuesday. I made my appointment for Wednesday the next day since it was for a color and haircut. I had to unfortunately cancel my appointment due to my travel for work. When i arrived with my daughter for her Tuesday appointment they refused to do her haircut.The staff at the desk said we cancelled your daughters appointment as well. NO one called told me that!!! So my 6 yr old daughter walked out of the salon crying. I never do reviews but I feel in my heart that moms need to know so this doesn't happen again. read more

I've been sitting on this for a couple of weeks. I honestly cannot sit on my thumbs any longer. Not only did they butcher my daughter's hair, they also charged her (17yrs) $650 when she checked out. After I called, the owner did respond and said "in haste", we did over charge her $108" and I said well you also butchered her hair (cut off over 8" on curly hair) They offered for her to come in and meet w the owner. Two days later worth of tears, she went in. The hair cannot be replaced, the terrible hair cut is inexcusable, but the owner did recognize the bad haircut, tried to do some blending. End of day, she discounted the haircut and the "overcharge". Now keep in mind, this business says they works off an hourly rate, not service based. And having mentioned that, my child didn't go there for a haircut, she went for color!!! I am still so confused about this entire thing. My advice, there are a lot of salons in town, this one is a dumpster fire. read more

I scheduled an appointment with Mary Lea. I accidently put the appointment on my calendar as Friday instead of Thursday. The receptionist called while I was looking at pictures of haircuts, excited about going the next day. She told me that I was late for my appointment and I felt horrible. The receptionist told me that I would need to pay them full price because of their 24 hour cancellation policy. She said that Mary Lea didn't have any more appointments but at that point I had paid $270 and would have to have paid another $270 if I went to her anyway. I made a mistake and it cost me $270. I can't afford to go somewhere else at this point so I won't get a haircut or color for quite a while. I'm in tears. I would have been happy to pay $50 but paying the full amount is unbelievable. The receptionist was really cheerful when she told me that I needed to pay full price. If you go here, just be sure not to make a mistake about the day. You will pay bigtime. read more

Just moved here so tried this on a livingsocial deal. First and last time I'll go with bargain hair service. Sad because I liked the place, my hair and the stylist. What I didn't like is my brand new J Crew Haberdashery shirt covered in dye. And it was a suprise since she didn't tell me... it was all down my back so I didn't know until I got home and took it off.
