I was researching granitas and found that there is something else called a grattachecca. Found an old book that talked about how there used to be grattachecca kiosks all over Rome but as of august 2016 - there are only 3 left!!!!! Grattachecca is when they shave ice off of a huge block and then flavor it with syrup. It's different then a granita (a much more common iced drink) because the ice is much chunkier and you eat it with a spoon until your ice melts. They have at least 30 flavors that go right on top: strawberry, mint, pomegranate, orange, etc. I came here about midnight and just loved the experience. A brightly colored street kiosk with a variety of tasty drinks and cold goodies to enjoy on a hot summer night. So when I asked for a grattachecca - he pulled it out a huge block of ice and placed it on the counter and then used a stainless steel tool to shave ice right off the top and put it into a clear plastic cup. He then added strawberry and mint syrup to it and ....Buon appetito!!! Soooo good!!

We asked what flavors we should get and the guy working there was very friendly and accommodating. He made good suggestions, he asked how we liked it and made adjustments based on that. We ended up with one orange and lemon one with chunks of coconut and a cherry and raspberry one with fresh lemon juice, coconut and high-quality marinated cherries. It reminded me of being at a good cocktail bar. The seating is quite nice, shady, and you can see the Supreme Court across the Tiber, although it's a bit loud due to the road right there.

If you're looking for a classic Roman coffee experience, La Casa del Caffè Tazza d'Oro is…read moredefinitely one to add to your list. Located just steps from the Pantheon in Piazza della Rotonda, this historic coffee bar has been a Roman institution since 1946 and is especially known for its coffee, which has helped make it one of the city's most famous cafés. The line was pretty long when we arrived, but it moved surprisingly quickly. You can enjoy your coffee and pastries inside while standing at the counter, or, if you're lucky, grab one of the few seats available inside. There's also outdoor seating, but keep in mind that sitting outside comes with a separate--and if I remember correctly, significantly higher--service charge. I'll be honest--I'm pretty sure I ordered the wrong thing. I ended up with what was essentially a frosty coffee ice cream, which is not what I was going for, lol. I was supposed to order the Granita di caffè con panna, which is their signature. It's a coffee granita--essentially finely shaved/frozen coffee--topped with whipped cream. Instead of whipped cream, I accidentally told my Italian nephew I wanted the coffee with ice cream, whoops. I also ordered a maritozzo, which I was absolutely on a mission to try while in Rome. The maritozzo is a traditional Roman sweet bun filled generously with whipped cream, and it did not disappoint. I was in a bit of a rush, so I didn't have time to enjoy my maritozzo there. I packed it up and ate it later that evening, and it was still delicious. I've also essentially given up coffee completely, so I only had a few bites and sips of my coffee ice cream, but what I tried was really good. The menu is fairly large and varied, and it can feel a little overwhelming when you're standing at the counter with a line behind you. I'd recommend taking a look at the menu ahead of time if you can so you have an idea of what you want before you get up to order. Overall, I'd definitely recommend stopping by. Tazza d'Oro is an institution, the location is hard to beat, and there's something fun about experiencing one of Rome's longtime coffee traditions--even if you accidentally order the wrong thing like I did!

I hope you read this review!!!…read more And this is why this review must be read! There are SO MANY places in Rome to buy gelato, at least one on every block. And they all taste the same, which isn't a bad thing, but it gets redundant after a while. We were impressed by several of the top-rated gelatarias. And then we accidentally stumbled into L'Orso Bianco, overheated and desperate to cool down. Unaware of the impressive ratings on Yelp, we figured we were in for another tasty but boring gelato experience. But this was something more! L'Orso Bianco, Italian for The White Bear, offers spectacular assortments of gelato and explosively powerful flavors. The cheesecake had delectable bits of crust. The mint flavor was wonderful, closer to spearmint than the American version of mint ice cream, but still fabulous. But the Frutti di Bosco (berry) was the single best scoop of gelato I had in all of Rome! So fruity, so powerful, so amazing. They crammed three large scoops of marvelous gelato into a medium-sized cup for a very reasonable price, and I opted to top it with fresh cream. They also have napkins that depict the most famous sites across Rome. So awesome! If you get a single gelato in all of Rome come here!
