The entire staff--from the administrative team to the dedicated doctors, nurses, and surgeons--were not only competent and talented but also genuinely friendly, patient, and attentive. Every question was answered with care, and I always felt respected and prioritized during my recovery. Beyond the medical excellence, the hospital environment itself was superb. The rooms were impeccably clean, and the attention to hygiene was constant and reassuring. Even the food was delicious and provided great comfort during my recovery. Emergency room wait times are literally insane. We show up at 1130am and waited for 9 hours. It was so overflowed we had to eventually sit in the hallway while my wife was in excruciating pain with an iv bag hanging. We eventually got a room, just in time for me to have to leave because it was after 10pm and no visitors allowed. Not even spouses. The cafeteria is incredible though. Reasonable prices and so many options. read more

I sat in the waiting room for 12 hours and never was put in a room. They would run tests and send me back to the waiting area. When you don't feel good, no one wants to sit in a chair, unable to relax. I got yelled at and threatened by a patient and the security guards were so unprofessional. All they did was complain about working double shifts and wanting to go home. One security guard kept calling the patients psycho and talking loudly about them to every new person that came in. They wouldn't allow my husband to sit with me in the waiting room because it was so packed. It took 5 hours after I was admitted to even get a room. This experience was terrible and not what I expected from this hospital group. Treat your patients like people and not scum, please. read more

One of the worst hospitals I have ever experienced! People who are genuinely sick in the Emergency Room, puking, are being looked over with hours of waiting just to be treated like the scum of the earth. They pack people into a room who are all sick and act like we're crazy when we complain about waiting for so long. Actually one of the worst experiences in my life. AGH emergency department was like third world country. I witnessed a very sick woman with a bag for vomit sitting in a wheel chair, she fell out of the chair and was lying on the floor. I went to the triage area and reported the problem, it was not new to them. She had fallen out of her chair earlier in the afternoon, she had reported it to the appropriate folks twice and nothing was done. She was so sick. I saw a police officer and two staff members literally step over her, offered no help. My 96 year old aunt had been brought in via EMS, I was not allowed to go back and see her, they were to call me when she was ready. They never called me back until I insisted I be able to see her, I found her sitting in a wheel chair in the treatment area in her urine. She had asked several workers to take her to the bathroom, no-one helped her, hence she urinated on the floor, no-one cleaned that up. Someone needs to address the care at this madhouse, it was deplorable. Where is the compassionate care? read more

I ABSOLUTELY WOULD NOT GO HERE. My mom had a knee replacement about a year ago. We were rushed out of recovery when the nurses were done with their shift. They literally told us not to wait for patient transport to our car. So we wheel my mom, and her newly operated knee, ourselves. While we waited for my sister to bring the car around, I noticed many people in wheelchairs being pushed by patient transport. We weren't even instructed by the nurses in how to get our mom in the car (minivan, so it was a little high). Thankfully a patient transporter came over to help. I told them what the nurses said, and they were shocked. I am going to report them to TJC and Medicare. read more

I never Had a Issue with Agh until my last visit on 2-9-26. The care in the emergency room was awful I would love to put the name of the Dr on here, but I will not. This Dr called Me and A wife a Lier to our face. So, I lost my cool Not only did I wait 12 hrs. in the hospital er because the Er doctor don't believe in pain med's I have Chronic Pain from 4 back surgery's. he wanted me to lay on my back for 45 mins without any pain meds I cannot do that. This Doctors change care 6 times before i left ama. I did not sign anything because if something dose happen to me, I am holding him responsible. STILL IN PAIN THANKS FOR NOTHING Dr Davenport. I am besides myelf with anger and disbelief. I come down to the ER in severe unbearable pain, uable to sleep or eat, double over in pain, sit there for 6 hours then your gonna send me home with a shot of vivacain and o pain medicine so i am actually in a worse situacion than before having strained myself and exhausted myself for an hour of relief. That lanacain started wearing off the second i left the building. A little lanacain isnt gonna deal with a throbbing vein in a guys face. How am I supposed to sleep tonight. Rub a little lanacain on it and say come back tomorrow? I feel like your treating me like a drug user not giving the pain medicine that i sorly need to make it through a night. Instead you leave me to suffer in PAIN where i have to go to a different ER because your FREAKING lanacain is already wearing off and i am i I n MAJOR PAIN. I said MAJOR PAIN. And i did not appreciate the comments from Dr Shellan, youve had absess before you know how to handle it/. WTF? Ive never had this amount of pain in my life. I had an awful experience in the EEG lab at AGH. Terry, the technician was mean, rude and didn't seem to know what she was doing because the way she performed the test was nothing like the video they told me to watch, showing proper protocol of the test. Her approach was sloppy and painful and she didn't care when I told her she was hurting me. She did not explain what to expect next and had a huge chip on her shoulder. Zero compassion for patients and the restroom was filthy. Sink clogged and overflowing. No soap. Paper towels all over the floor and trash can overflowing with rubbish. I had elbow surgery at AGH and aside from my doctor who was terrific, I experienced the same miserable attitude from medical employees in the surgery area and thought maybe I just caught them on a bad day. I have just come home from major surgery at this hospital requiring an inpatient stay and I must admit I felt like I was a step away from hell! The good: The physicians, medical staff did an outstanding job of insuring a successful surgery and daily follow up care. They do try to keep whatever room you are staying in fairly clean and tidy. The bad: Communication with the nurse and dietary teams were very convoluted and would take hours to fix or they came with different instructions that the medical team had not told me. They would then go by "what supposedly they were told or what was in their computer system." It is already stressful to be in a hospital not knowing what's going to happen but to be totally put off edge by everything you hear does not lessen the anxiety. I was promised physical therapy on a daily basis but did not receive it with the exception of my first day and the day before discharge. NOTE: This hospital does NOT perform Co-Vid tests on any patients coming in for surgery nor if you are going to put in a semi private room. By the time I was downgraded from ICU I got a semi private room but was glad I had no one to share it with. As an inpatient you must wear your mask only when walking outside your room. You don't need it anytime you are in any of your assigned rooms. Staff remain masked at all times. For the most part I had a good nursing staff. Some of them did have attitudes and as others have noted, when I pressed my call button had to wait for long periods of time to get serviced. In one instance I knew my IV port was loose and needed fixed. After ringing three times the IV fell out of my hand on its own. Well good riddance to it! I also was in the same hospital gowns and the same bed linens for 5 days before anyone changed them for me. Meals-Well it's a hospital. Hit or miss, more times a miss! Discharge is fairly quick as I would imagine they need the beds for other patients. If parking in the James St garage day of surgery only, your designated driver gets a discount of $4.00 during the hospital stay. For discharge purposes they ask your driver to park as a pickup in their valet Sandusky street garage and they wheel you out at no cost to them. What I know is the most outrageous is that they will charge exorbitant amounts for your stay and provide you with average care. Unfortunately it is the nature of the beast almost at any hospital you go to but it's another necessity one must do in order to recover and get better. THIS PLACE IS ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE. Never go here unless you have absolutely no other options. This place should be sued into the ground for negligence. Someone close to me had a major, invasive, incapacitating surgery here that put them on an inpatient stay. Two of their nurses have been rockstars but every other member of staff they've dealt with post-op has been horrible! Due to this person's young age, despite having significant medical challenges they have not been taken seriously at all. They lost a dangerous amount of blood during the surgery and had to beg and plead for a blood transfusion just to get their blood pressure back to a safe level. There were very specific post-op care instructions, mostly left to the wayside. These instructions, such as the administration of (prescribed, essential) pain meds, changing of wound dressing, and specific vitals tests, were repeatedly neglected. Patients are given absolutely no dignity as they're subjected to invasive and non-essential interrogation during sensitive moments. Very simple comfort requests such as ice packs, water, and just closing the door when someone exits the room are ignored and denied. Medical personnel argue, gossip, talk smack about patients and each other, and complain about caregiving duties all well within patient earshot. I cannot provide more specific details at this time in case my loved one opts to sue but please just take my word for it that kind, compassionate staff who listen to the needs of their patients are a rare breed here, and most of the staff here are at least well past phoning it in and some should frankly have their medical licenses revoked. Please do not trust these people to give appropriate and compassionate care to your family member or yourself. If you're here to commiserate and/or warn others because you or a loved one also had a hospital stay from hell, let's give 'em hell back. Call and complain until it's more inconvenient for them to ignore you than it is to attempt to make things right. Sue if you have the means to and enough evidence to make a case. If you're currently dealing with them and having a poor experience, document, photograph, and record everything so you can present it later. Get everything possible in writing so you have hard evidence to present in court or even just to argue back with them when they try to deny essential care. No hospital should be allowed to legally operate like this. read more

Okay going to the ER suuuucks. I'm going to precede this by saying I spent 6 hours in the ER. But the care I received while dealing with staff members was great. The triage nurse was very kind, and helped me feel okay about being in a stressful situation. The medic who took my blood and put in my IV made it easy, and almost painless. (Even though I hate needles!) When I finally got back to a room, Dr. Justin was fantastic. He explained everything, listened to me and made me feel like he actually cared. When we finally got news, he explained what was going on and comforted me when I got upset. He really put me at ease. He also explained everything to my boyfriend who had questions while I couldn't make words. The radiology staff that I encountered was also very patient. I had to have a CT Scan, and they had me in and out in just minutes. Thank you so much for taking such good care of me! I hope I don't have to come back again! Haha! read more

Er is great but once i got out of there and into a room it was very uncomfortable and disappointing,dirty room and god forbid you push the call button for ice or that you threw up in the bathroom! AGH was always the best hospital around,it saddens me that i have to say but if you are able to have upmc insurance count yourself lucky. On the bright side, the diamond in the ruff was a nurse named Cooper who i feel should be training the staff on how to do their job the kind compassionate way five stars cooper! read more

Dealing with their payments department is absolutely horrendous. I had a procedure done. The morning of the procedure they went through the invoice with me and explained I owed c. $1660 after insurance. They asked me to pay it upfront so I did. three months after the procedure I got an additional invoice for c. $607. I contacted them and they said the original was only an "estimate"! which is totally contradictory to what I was told on the day. No one can tell me what the additional charge is for...payments say it is medical and they cant comment on it. Good luck trying to get hold of anyone medical (phoned eleven times). No one will return a call to tell me what the money is owed for but, I get several emails, letters and phone calls a week chasing the money!!! They are a total joke. read more

My son had an accident on campus and ended up here in the icu trauma unit. I cannot say enough about the trauma unit and the staff in that area. Everyone there was friendly and attentive. They explained everything and were there when anything was needed. Unfortunately, we haven't had the same experience with the 10th floor. We came up from trauma about 10 am. The nurse getting us settled was great. And to be honest, there were 3 of us. My mom (his gram) had been in the waiting room downstairs but walked in a minute for him to get settled. Then his gf was in for the day from several hours away. Nurse said you know Visitor rules are 2.. but I don't mind. We said we'd stay quiet and all. She said no problem we had a nice calm hour or so until the neighboring bed was filled. A man, his mom and significant other. He had wrecked last night coming home from the strip club. They were loud as heck laughing and talking. Not to mention everything was mfing. Mfing car. Mfing wreck. Mfing hospital. We didn't really see staff the rest of the day unless my son called for pain. A few staff were in and out just to peek in. At one point we went to the hall and asked for a blanket. Asked again. Never got one. Went to the gift store and spent $80 on a blanket. Loud visitors from adjoining bed left thank God. So 4:30 after us sitting quietly all day... I take his water pitcher out in search of water. The woman at the nurses desk (audrica) screams at me to never bring the water pitcher out of the room. So I go back. She eventually brings water in. Then announces, "there are 3 of you!!!". Yes.. we know. One of us is leaving here in 10 min. (His gf was driving back to college). Well this nasty woman says ok. Leaves. And sends in the head of nursing and his assistant to give us the rules once more. So two of us stepped out while his gf said her goodbyes. We returned. At this point a student nurse and her supervisor came In. They were absolutely lovely and no complaints whatsoever. They were respectful and friendly. Did a little check up and moved on. So evening nurse for strip club goer comes in. He is assuring the driver he won't be in trouble for drinking and driving as he didn't hit anyone else. Just a wall. Also asked if the man's wife knew where he was last night. He said no. he asked if he goes a lot. Patient said sometimes. He suggested he lie to his wife and say he was at some back door party or something and mentioned he goes there all of the time. Same nurse also came in with the wrong meds for my son. Then did the same with the neighbor's iv. Pay attention dude. We caught my son's mistaken meds. Someone else pointed out the iv mistake.Nurse Tiffany is super nice. Professional and kind. Tracy, Tuesday's nurse is so very good. So again today room sharing patient and family screamed and laughed all day. Even during the 2 hour quiet time. So of you're going to enforce the rules for 3 quiet women sitting at the bedside of someone they love, then for goodness sake, enforce it for the people screaming and making noise 24/7. It's a hospital. Two trauma drs came up today and talked about the options to discharge or stay another day. Of course we chose discharge and promised to return for any follow up tests needed. We are home, and I'm so glad. Overall, my son's care was very good, but there are definitely points where major improvements need to be made. read more

Horrible hospital, giving unnecessary procedures and treatments without consents. My husband would wake up with straps on and surgical marks on him. Lies from nurses and doctors about what is going on every time I asked there were different answers if I could even speak to anyone. He refused medication and they forced him to have an IV in, he woke up several times as they were putting medication in the IV. He had pulled the IV out before and that's why they strapped him down. They kept him strapped down for 6 days while saying he needs observation even though there was no head trauma. read more

I had surgery on October 12th. I had to stay overnight I have been taking sleep aids for least 20 25 years I was given 50mg of trasodone which did not help with my sleep at all. I had total hip replacement on February 2020. Did not have any kind of issues with sleep aid. The daylight nurse on the 8th door was very mean and rude to me. I believe her name was Syna. I was pleasantly surprised. I had a horrid experience there about 6-7 years ago with a terrible security person and a sarcastic doctor. I went to different ER's after that. I was so angry I walked out with the IV port in my arm. Totally different now. Security was professional and friendly. Intake went rapidly though that can always change in any emergency room. The staff was friendly . The doctor was excellent and explained things well. I'm glad AGH has greatly improved their emergency department. The ER Department is actually on Sandusky Street. read more

Everyone on the sixth floor work together as a team to ensure each patient receives the proper care and treatment. All of the nurses and doctors treated my dad with respect and care. They communicated with him and with me to make sure his wishes were met. Although surgery was not feasible, they provided comfort and care. read more

This place is amazing. I had a Lumbar Spine Fusion and my Dr. (Dan Altman) and his surgical staff were terrific. I am 6 days out from my surgery and the pain is completely manageable. But that isn't all. From the valet parking staff to the nurses, each was nicer than the last. The sympathy that they showed was only surpassed by their focus on my care. I have to admit that I was afraid. The OR staff had me laughing and relaxed me as much as possible. I also want to include the information people. We went in a few days early to check out the facilities. Linda was done for the day but that didn't stop her from spending time with us. Answering all of our questions and making us comfortable with my upcoming stay. I could go on and on but every story is the same. So I guess what I am saying is this is a great place to go if you need a hospital. I feel like I really connected with these guys. read more

Our friend was brought here last night for alcohol poisoning. We arrived as soon as she did (via ambulance), and were witness to the low quality of care she received. Distressed and uncertain why she wasn't allowed to leave, my friend pulled out her IV in the bathroom. The nurse was aggravated and rude towards her, and didn't explain what she was doing. While she was sticking in an IV and trying to get a pulse read, my friend grew more upset because she didn't understand what was happening. The least the care team could have done would be to explain what was going on to her. While we were trying to get her discharged, the doctors kept insisting that her heart rate drop below an arbitrary value before they let her leave. The doctor was short with my friend and overall our experience was horrible. read more

My husband had a procedure today and I can not say enough wonderful things about Dr Ramzi Khalil and Rachel the PA. They were both so informative and patient while my husband and I asked questions. Both are just really nice people. On the down side the nurses were kind of OK with my husband but acted as if I was invisible. I kept telling my husband I wore my cloak of invisibility today. As an RN for the largest health system in Pittsburgh I know how I treat my patients and I acknowledge the families and am inclusive with their care. We have multiple inservices each year on a holistic approach to patient care. I introduced my self to the two nurses who cared for my husband this was after they would come into the room both said their name and that was the entire conversation. I actually said to my husband it made me so sad to see another nurse act that way. One bright light was Con from the cardiac catheter lab he was great he will go far in his work life. One last funny thing was when we came into the hospital just before 7:00AM one of the security guards was sound asleep at a table that said security, luckily he didn't have to wake up for an emergency. This is the second time we saw security sleeping at the desk the other time was in February. If they could work on improving the nursing attitudes and asking staff to put their phones away, it could be a great hospital. read more

Came here, woke up with less liver than I started with. I hear rumors that sometimes people leave with more stuff in their body than before. Even crazier, sometimes they get exposed to radiation and DON'T develop superpowers (although surviving is a sweet side effect). In all seriousness though, aside from having food that is so bad it may be a violation of the Geneva convention, I've always received wonderful care here. Nurses do the heavy lifting of health care and the ones on 8a are superstars. Rachel, Amy, Denise, Ellen, Mandy, heck, even had fantastic care from a student nurse named Gianna. Hospitals suck. You really should avoid them if you have that option. However, if you need top notch care, AGH kinda kicks butt. read more

I've been being treated here since November of 2016 for Glioblastoma (brain cancer). My neuro-oncologist recently left and with her leaving, it shows just how much in shambles this hospital is. They currently have no plan or anyone qualified filling the spot. I'm thankful I'm able to go to a new hospital and see a new doctor, but I feel for the existing patients who have no plan and no idea what to do. AGH needs to get their head out of the sand and care more about their patients instead of money. read more

My husband had cancer and was admitted to this hospital for surgery. Post-surgery, my husband was taken to a nursing unit. Everyday, the nurses and nursing assistants went hours without checking on him. When we pressed the call bell, they turned it off and did not visit the room. When I walked to the nurses' station, the employees ignored me. When the physician ordered my husband's first meal, the nurse practitioner mistakenly took away the food tray, and she did not bring another tray or even a snack. Nurses were hours late in giving my husband pain medication, and they did not change his dirty bandages or bloody gown for days. When a nurse discharged my husband home, she gave us literature for the wrong type of cancer, and she did not review his medications or how to do wound care. She also did not give him an abdominal binder, so one of his incisions started to dehisce at home, and we ended up in the emergency department for several hours. He developed a hernia, for which he later underwent another surgery at this hospital. That surgery went smoothly, and my husband was discharged home on the same day. My husband still receives diagnostic tests here to ensure that his cancer does not return. *I do feel very thankful that my husband is currently still cancer-free.* Overall, the surgeons performed their jobs well, but the nurses did not. read more

Great experience from door to door. Right hip replaced by Dr Slipak. P.A Theo helped me navigate preop. Have had other orthopedic procedures and 2 surgeries over past 6 years. This was 1st overnight visit. A bit of delay kept me there. OK with me. Had help and pain meds. Concienscios post op care when teaching home p.t. and o.t. Caught a low b/p, so medical resident got me on a couple hours of extra fluids. All support staff pleasant to meet my needs. Each RN made me feel confident that I was in a safe environment as far as vitals, labs and assessments. Saw a few 1st year residents and 3rd year internal medicine. My surgeon.saw me prior to discharge to review my low b/p problem and to call HIM for any problem. Thanks Dr Slipak for you patience. I have had Dr Ward 05/2020 and Dr OH 2016. All great. Impressed with quality of care, diagnostics, and visitor friendly communications. AGH is kind of a giant maze of elevators, dead end hallways, and hidden lavatories. But that is part of the charm of one of the top Pittsburgh hospitals. On a less important but useful note, their cafeteria has good quality diner food at very cheap rates. 2nd floor, check it out. Their chile cheese dog may be a more sinister part of a clever marketing scheme to score heart surgery patients but who is counting :-). I'm teasing, relax! read more

I had a misfortune of laying on a gurney across from the nurses station for 6 hrs recently. What I saw and heard from several nurses was enough to the make me be panicked if I ever had to return. Fol language, laughing at patients, a lot just '' hanging out talking and basically bad attitudes. The good ones stood out and the extremely bad nurse stood out more because he spent almost all of his time in there. The bathrooms one didn't lock, one had no tp and one didn't flush. never collected my urine sample. Dr had to remove my port so I could leave. The upside is, I know all about illegal car window tinting and how to put in for extra hours to do nothing. read more

We've been very pleased with AGH over the past 4 years working with neuro, MRI services and general surgery. Staff are friendly, the check in and billing activities are efficient and the valet parking is a real plus. Having spent many long days and nights here we also appreciate the food services ... surprising, maybe, but the selection and quality in the cafeteria are quite good. Over several years now some major construction on parking, interior and exterior areas has been a minor inconvenience but the result has been a much improved and refreshed environment. Well done all around there. Surprised but not surprised today to see that apparently CDC guidelines on social distancing and masking haven't quite made it to AGH yet. I'm sure this is policy set broadly though and not a local choice. Would be nice to see hospitals following the science. If you have a choice of providers we highly recommend AGH. read more

I had meniscus surgery today on the outpatient surgery area on floor 01. I felt the need to make a review because my experience with staff was wonderful and redeemed a not so pleasant experience I had in 2018 with carpal tunnel surgery. As an employee of AHN (RN) and former employee of AGH for 15 years, this was a great experience because the nurses, surgeon, anesthesiologist, and other ancillary staff were knowledgable, kind and made me feel safe! in 2018, i did not feel that way with the staff and as a nurse how was a current employee at the time I was "pissed" for a lack of a better word even though surgery went well in 2018. I like to give credit were credit is due, they were awesome today and I truly recommend AGH because they always improve for patient care and grow. Thank You!!!! read more

I've had good experiences here. I'm battling cancer and have been here several times. The facility is old in places, and different floors and areas show different levels of renovation. Some look new. This hospital has all the bases covered - good equipment and expertise in radiology on oncology to be sure. I want to mention that they have a very nice associate at the entrance to the James Street parking deck. At first, I thought his job was to take a parking ticket from the machine and hand it to me. But his real job is to smile, be positive, and welcome sick people or concerned people. And he does a great job. read more

First of all if I has a pet rat I wouldn't send it to AGH! My friend went through the emergency department first shortness of breathe, care was Good, though the restroom in the back where the rooms are were disgusting. Moving forward she was sent to observation floor for highblood pressure and shortness of breathe. Short version a Nurse threw a pillow at her, and another nurse attempted to harass her, because of her friend that threw the pillow. As people we wonder why so much hate, those 2 nurses should be Fired! People are at a hospital for care not abuse. And unfortunately these Nurses are backed by Union's. Look in on your love ones! Follow chain of command to get proper assistance in complaints, cause this type of behavior from Hospital staff is unacceptable. If I would have spoke to her like she spoke to me, they would've called security and escorted me out. They are backed by a Union so basically nothing will happen. God will judge her, touch not God anointed and do his prophet no harm. Shame on you AGH for accepting this behavior from your staff at any level. read more
