I wasn't in the ER I was on one of the floors.10/20 I had 3 procedure's done.It would take.15-20 min. For someone to come to my room.I was discharged 10/21. Went back in for emergency surgery 10/27.I was to have boots for blood clots put on my legs.I asked the nurse she looked at it not concerned said well they're not hooked up,no machine.NEVER got a machine to hook them up at all.I was to have a binder on they took it off to get my vitals NEVER put it back on.It sounded like there was a party going on at the desk outside of my room.I said is there a party going on,she said "oh no we're just having a good time".I had to have her close my door for it to be quiet.I was in 3 days before I could get my reg. Meds. The nurse called down on the 3rd. day at 1:00pm still at.10:00pm I had no meds. I needed my anti-depressant meds. Finally by the next morning I was able to get my meds.I didn't sleep for 3days due to this.My one nurse told me she didn't know what she was doing.She normally was in resources they pulled her off for that evening read more

this was by far the worst hospital I have ever been to! I understand other patients having more of a critical condition than my boyfriend who was admitted, but nearly 12 hours for a test that another hospital referred us to get here! Ridiculous and so unprofessional. we asked so many times how long it would take him to get the care he needed and they kept telling us there were no guarantee for anything. Several years later and I would have to prefer Presbyterian over Mercy overall and my own doctor practices there but some of the nurses are clearly disinterested and preoccupied with their own nonsense to really care much. A minority percentage anyway as there are some great caring nurturing nurses to be found at Presbyterian... Seems like some of the floors you get a room to yourself on like Mercy where you usually have a roommate unless you are in the rich person section I guess... There are a lot of rooms at Presbyterian that do not have a view of anything other than the heating and cooling Machinery on the roof or inside of the building whereas pretty much every room at Mercy has a good view read more

It's was really hard to find and than even worse throng to find parking because of the traffic and all the building are right next to each other. Than trying to find the entrance plus the room was a challenge but the do have a help desk and they were helpful. I was just a visitor but it seemed like nurses and doctors were doing a good job. It was a nice touch have a Starbucks,bank,gift shoo in the hospital. Also the visitor waiting rooms were nice each had a TV. The cafeteria was great with lots of food selections. The patient arrived in bad shape and was released in good shape so that's always a plus. read more

Presby had its annual free holiday lunch yesterday, and I partook. I don't like to look a gift horse in the mouth, but it reminded me of why I refuse to spend money on the swill served here. Trust me when I say that you don't need to have dietary restrictions to realize that the food served here is piss poor, even by cafeteria standards. As I filed through the lunch line, I was asked if I'd like a stuffed pot-pie style chicken breast, and I assented. Seeing ham with pineapple, I went to get a slice, but was told that I could only have one entree. Um, okay, but perhaps I could have been asked if I wanted chicken, ham, or eggplant, instead of simply being asked if I wanted chicken. Anyway, going down the line, I was offered white rice and cooked baby carrots, which I accepted. The salads, which I encountered next, looked rather wilted, but I took one anyway, since I wanted some greens with my meal. After that, I took a dinner roll and butter, dipped myself some eggnog, and took two pastries. Doesn't free food always taste best, you ask? Well, that adage certainly didn't apply here, since this food was no better than the usual offerings. If I had to describe the taste in a word, "bland" would be the one that I choose. Even so, I ate all of it except for the wilted salad, since it was, indeed, free. The best part of the meal was the eggnog, which I'm sure was straight out of a jug, but was nevertheless more flavorful than even the pastries. I appreciate Presby's effort to get into the holiday spirit--really, I do. However, their execution needs work. For example, not pre-dressing the salads would avoid the wilting problem--which, by the way, was present at last year's holiday meal as well. While I'm tempted to give them two stars for effort, I'm going with my original assessment of one due to the their use of all styrofoam containers, which shows no concern for the environment. Considered in conjunction with the lackluster lunch options at other nearby eateries, the poor quality of food at the Presby cafeteria motivates me to pack my lunch every day and save my money for better culinary uses. read more

If I could give it a zero I would. Very unprofessional support staff. My son has a condition that causes him to be constipated and has serious pain. I took him to the ER there for help relieving himself. We waited 6 hours for an enema and the tech took him to the restroom to get him started and in 45 minutes he came back so upset because three of their security cops pounded on the door to make him come out and wrongly accused him of smoking because these idiots listened to a stupid patient that told a pct and she called security. He was trying to do a procedure to help himself that he waited 6 hours for and these morons made him feel worse. His nurse and doctors were very upset this happened, too, but the damage was already done. The tech should've stayed there with him or he should've done this in his room. DONT WASTE YOUR TIME GOING TO UPMC ER! Terrible hospital! read more

I'm not really sure what pee are talking about when they rate it low.My Mom has been in several hospitals since July and all we got was the run around hours upon hours of sitting in ERs without even a dr coming in until about 3 hours into the wait. After having yet another issue we decided to take her to upmc Presbyterian The best decision we've made in a very long time. the ER check in was smooth and quick we were taken back after about a half hour the ER DRS AND NURSES were amazing .they are even more ama ing upstairs . we've seen heart drs , kidney drs , AFib drs , they are very kind and exlain everything answer any w questions we have they visit her room often . her condition has improved greatly since we've been here. I'm just a weeks time her heart is working at 40% instead of 20% . her oxygen level is back where it's supposed to be instead of in the low 80's . in ONE week we have more ptogress and answers than we have gotten in 5 months from other drs and hospitals . although our drive is about 1 1/2 hours it has been well worth it. the nursing staff is amazing as well!! read more

Life flight to UPMC HAMOT from Titusville Comunity Hospital in a non cardiology community rural hosp. To UPMC HAMOT in Erie Pa. Loads of cardiologists but no one to do my heart procedure. Ambulance to UPMC PRESBYTERIAN in Pittsburgh. Plenty of cardiologists to diagnose ad treat me with an ablation. Great class A cardio ICU unit. Great Drs. Great staff, you feel in compitant hands. No incidents on 2nd floor ICU, no incidents on 5th floor except dirty. 3rd floor . Staff compitant if you get them , too busy talking to pay much attention on 3rd shift, got their attention by throwing an empty urinal out to the hall after pushing help button, and trying to get attention in a nice way. They were right outside my room at 4 am , no response and supposed to be ministering my telemetry. To busy talking loudly and laughing. read more

My mother and I had to take my sister here the other night, and it left me with yet another bad taste in my mouth for UPMC and the for-profit healthcare system. The positives: 1) The waiting room was fairly nice with a flatscreen television and internet access. 2)They saw my sister right away. 3)The doctor that saw her was attentive. 4)The actual medical staff was generally helpful and friendly. The negatives: 1) This place is too big. 2) It's too hard to find your way around. 3)This was a Friday night, and for some reason they don't have valet parking on the weekends. 4)They let me sit in the waiting room for 90 minutes without letting me know what was going on with my sister. Someone did manage to find me and bring me to her after that. 5) They told her they'd give her an antibiotic for her UT infection but then changed their minds after she asked for it upon leaving. Did she get good care here? I guess, but I was reminded of what a monster UPMC has become and how the for-profit system has enabled their near-monopoly. I never had issues like this at Mercy or St. Francis prior to UPMC swallowing them up, and my experiences at St. Clair have always been stellar. St. Clair at least has a valet service on weekends. read more

Isn't a hospital supposed to be good for one's health? Shouldn't it follow that food prepared and sold inside that same hospital to employees and visitors should also be good for their health? If only that were so. Rows of drink machines line the edges of this sprawling area. Full sugar carbonated drinks abound, full sugar iced teas, a few carbonated diet sodas, a smattering of waters, and NO diet iced tea? There's a table where baskets of gluten free cookies and cakes should be...SHOULD be. Several days in a row the baskets were empty, finally I enquired when the next delivery would be. "Oh! We keep those frozen in the back!" Doesn't anyone check the stock? Yeah, I'm talking about healthy and then complain about there being no cookies. There's nothing else edible to be had if gluten is a problem for you. Out of necessity, many meals have been made lately of a banana and a GF cookie (WHEN one could be found). Ya gotta do what ya gotta do. UPMC Passavant has an excellent assortment of healthy gluten free items. They even have gluten free pizzas baked to order. They have baked potatoes with gf toppings, gluten free snacks and GOOD and healthy freshly made food both regular and GF and that hasn't sat on a steam table for hours. The point here is that if one UPMC hospital can do it right, the other can. It's not just a gluten free issue. With the size of this place and the staff they have, certainly better methods can be put into place to ensure pizza slices are fresh or made to order, that French fries don't sit in steam table trays until flaccid, that gluten free breads or buns are available at the deli area. How about supervision and quality control to be sure items are replaced as needed, that items don't sit too long, that a balance of sugar free drinks is available. Come on UPMC Presbyterian Cafeteria...you can do better. You have one of the top facilities in the country with the top doctors and nurses. Surely your cafeteria could step up its game to feed that stellar staff the way they should be, to feed guests going through stressful times in a way that doesn't force them out the hospital to find edible food. Maybe Passavant could guide you through a revamp. It's desperately needed. read more

Went here and saw Cholappadi V. Sundar-Raj, OD PhD. Was not impressed with the staff or optomotrist. When I first was called back the guy (assistant? nurse? idk.) made no eye contact while speaking to me. He seemed rushed and just wanted to get me over and done with. He was in such a rush that when using eye drops he gave me no forewarning. I literally had to stop him and ask what he was doing and what the eye drops were for. This didn't happen just once but 3 different times. Then when I saw the optomotrist he seemed just as rushed. I've had glasses since I was 11 so am pretty familiar with the process of getting a routine eye exam and this was by far the quickest. The worst part was when he finished he didn't offer me any type of eye wear to protect my eyes. Once your eyes are dialated after an exam it is customary to get sunglasses of some sort to protect your eyes from the sunlight when you go outside. I was dizzy and took me forever to get to my car since the sunglight was too much. Overall I would not come back here. And no, I was not the only one complaining. I overheard 2 other customers in the waiting room saying they felt rush. If this place has a short staff then they should consider booking less appointments in one day. read more

I was referred to Dr. Sundar-Raj for a new prescription after having retinal surgery with Dr. Eller. My surgery with Dr. Eller saved my sight, and I can't recommend Dr. Eller enough! Dr Sundar-Raj, however, was in the room for hardly three minutes, barely looked in my eyes, and then wrote a prescription for a strength and brand of contact lens that doesn't exist. (He prescribed a -10 soft Acuvue lens, and they only go up to -9.) I was charged the $80 out of pocket prescription fee, and then had to chase down the office to edit the prescription to a type of lens that I could actually purchase. A year later, I returned for my yearly contact prescription. Again, after two minutes in the room and barely a glance at my eyes, Dr. Sundar-Raj said that we should just reorder the lenses I had that were working well. Relieved that it would be easier this time around, I agreed. When I got home (after paying another $80 out of pocket) it turns out that there was an error on the axis line of the prescription that made it not match up with the existing lenses I had that worked so well. I've been on the phone with his office for over an hour trying to get this error corrected so that I can get my new contacts. Of course the doctor doesn't want to admit to all of these errors, so he's insisting that the incorrect prescription is correct and refusing to change it. Meanwhile, I am out $80 and have no functional contact lenses. This hospital is fine, but under NO CIRCUMSTANCES should anyone see Dr. Sundar-Raj! read more

Usually my visits here have been amazing, however, this one has been lackluster and continues to do so as the days go on. My father is in here recovering from recent survey and when he got out of surgery it took them about 9 hours to find him a bed and get him to a room, then the bed they found him was broken. So he has been uncomfortable after major surgery and unable to sleep due to bring on a broken bed for over 60 hours. So the hospital care coach, nurses and doctors told us they would get him a new bed, and more than 60 hour later, he's still in this broken bed. Also his gown does not fit or cover him, so the gown they ordered has also taken more than 48 hours to come in and upon his discharge still has not come in. On top of all of this, the ceiling tile fell in his wing. Yes, the ceiling tile fell and laid on the ground for 4 hours... This was only after housecleaning walked over it and did not clean it up, twice. I'm pretty sure it's a fire hazard and in general not safe or clean to have a ceiling exposed in a recovery wing. I went to find the patient advocate, and they also have been terrible. You cannot just go down and meet with the advocate, you have to call them. But please understand, they have office hours, and you can't meet with then face to face. So we have a bed that is broken and was never fixed or given a new one during his stay, a gown that doesn't fit and the new one never came in, a ceiling tile that fell and wasn't cleaned up or fixed for 4 hours, and a patient advocate that can't be found. Overall, I'm not pleased with the cleanliness out customer care with this visit, at all. The overall care was good, most of the nurses and doctors were awesome but, everything else was so far below expectation, it is scary. read more

This review is for all of the staff that my grandfather and I came into contact with over the past 2 days. We traveled out for some testing for the UPMC Lung Transplant Program. Between the 2 of us both days we got lost, turned around, confused or stuck at least 20 times. Each time, we stopped an employee and each time they went ABOVE AND BEYOND to help us. From the nurses, students, teachers, janitors, administrative, information desk, cafeteria workers, parking attendants... EVERYONE!! And every single person we passed was so delightful. It really made us feel comfortable and helped to ease my paps nervousness a little. The Lung team was also great. They were all very understanding and took time to thoroughly explain every detail. We were treated with respect and as actual people and not just another case. I want to thank every person that spoke to my pap for giving him hope and options! I also want to touch base on where we stayed.. if you ever need to stay in the Pittsburgh area while a patient at Presby, I highly recommend The Family House. There is one literally 2 blocks away and you really feel like you're family. I'll make a separate review on their page and go into detail but it makes all the difference when you are surrounded by people going through issues just like you. read more

I have had surgery many times and this is my worst experience to date when it comes to anesthesia, pain management, and recovery care. Again, I had similar surgeries multiple times in the past so its not that I have unrealistic expectations when it comes to comfort, but my throat hurted terribly post op (this is my 4th time undergoing general anesthesia so it's not like i didn't know what to expect), and i was severely dehydrated post-op (i have had similar surgeries as well as surgeries with more blood loss - again, i knew what to expect and this is below expectation). I felt like the nurses at the recovery room rushed me out before i had enough iv fluid to cope with dehydration. Not to mention that the recovery room nurse was kinda rude and not responsive when asked for. the only reason i give this a 2 star is that before the surgery the wait room staff and nurses are all very friendly and that gets an extra star in my book. but aside from that i gotta say I'm not a fan of being practiced on by students -even tho i understand that's necessary, i kinda hope they could be more prepared before practicing on real patients. i had the worst iv job ever, i kinda wish she hadn't inject me with the numbing shot since it didn't do anything for me at all (still hurt a lot when she struggles to put the iv in). and my mouth and lips still have lots of cuts and scratches from presumably a sloppy anesthesia/intubation job. read more

Had hearing tests done. Moved to audiologist and was fitted w hearing aids. All was good for the first three visits. During that time I was quoted a price of $200 for the optional remote to go with my new $5400 phonak hearing aids. When I got my bill they charged me $450 for the remote she had quoted at $200. I reminded them of the quote and found that quote was convienently forgotten. No adjustment! I was then inspired to research prices on the same aid elsewhere. Shame on me for spending that much money without researching it first. Found that I was overcharged by $1,200 or more depending on where I could have bought them. Again! No adjustment! Most places throw the remote in for free. On my last visit we were adjusting the remote and Audiologist handed the remote to me and said I dont know how to operate it. I also noticed she had trouble initially programming the aids. Not sure if she knows how to program the newer and high end models. Do your homework! I was referred by a friend. I trusted This audiologist and my friend. Not anymore. Highly suggest going somewhere else for hearing aids. Besides, parking is a pain and will cost about $8 per visit. What a change in my opinion from the first visit to my last. All this is not to mention that I drove an hour and a half each way for each visit. Love the aids but they ain't worth the price now that I know the competition. read more

Was not taken seriously due my back pain leg pain and knee pain after a fall down the steps. Did not even consult with my neurosurgeon who practices out of the hospital. MRI done on back "nothing stooo out" X-rays done on knee that was swollen 2x it's normal size. Not even a mention of results until we asked. Their response "oh it must be fine" not even a referral given to follow up with ortho. This after previous multiple back surgeries and knee surgeries. Also, the nurses did not hide their views of patients coming into the ER, saying most are faking it. What a shame. I left with no answers and no follow up. read more

I don't know what the poor reviews are about, but they provided top-notch care to me. I had to be admitted for neurosurgery and the whole experience was positive (well, as positive as it can be for surgery). Perhaps, it is just departmental based. Appointments were not hard to get, they sent me all the information beforehand. Got my MRI in their Radiology Department and that was fine. The nurses, surgeon, residents all took great care of me for the two nights I was in their hospital. They gave me round the clock care and made sure I was comfortable after surgery. One of the nurses even held my hair and held me close to comfort me when I was puking from the nausea from surgery. The surgeon fixed my issue and visited me a total of 4 times after surgery while I was still admitted. The nurse practitioner met with me before surgery and has been the one to follow-up a few times with me after I left Pittsburgh. The whole staff was amazing! read more

They sent my husbands hospital bill to collections EVEN THOUGH i had him set up on a payment plan. Customer service said the payment didnt go through. Which doesnt make sense because my payments in my name have gone through and it was a billing messup on their end. Customer service said they cant take it outta collections and i just need to set up a payment plan with collections. They said they've sent out collection notices, which we never received. And she claims it went to collections in august, then why would you let me make a payment plan this past march? And in april i got a random bill from them and so i called to make sure it was all under his payment plan that i just set up and they said it was. Are they just lying so they dont have to work? Tell me, it it ethical for our credit to get messed up because their billing department doesnt do their job? read more

All UPMC conected doctors are tied together through the computer system in place ,so a nurse at my dialysis clinic can watch any procedures or operations on me in real time as they occur in - for example - UPMC Shadyside. Filling out all that paperwork for a new doctor is a simple matter of signing the top sheet and handing it to the receptionist. It allows all the doctors to work together on all cases and do referrals with the click of the mouse button. The dialysis center-with large letters identifying it at end of hall on Pavilion 3- is one of the best in the USA and having dialysis done there is an exercise in Hollywood style doctoring. It's amazing the level of expertise everyone of these people have. Definitely a 5 star experience at UPMC Shadyside. For combined organ failure this place is 2nd only to the Mayo Clinic. read more

About 10 years ago I was delivered there through an emergency. An acquaintance of mine who accompanied me there counted that I had to repeat my story 6 times to 6 different people. Definitely, there was poor communication between the staff in that hospital. It was a night, no patients and a lot of medical staff but everyone seemed to be busy chatting or looking at their computers. I waited for 2-3 hours, then a doctor came to me. He didn't touch or examine me, just asked how it happened and suggested a tomography. There computers went down during the tomography; they were not able to complete it, so I didn't get any results, just radiation. BTW, during the procedure, the female radiologist was chatting with a nurse and didn't pay attention if I was comfortable or not. But at the end then they promptly sent me a bill for over $5,000. read more

My mother was admitted for a brain aneurysm and had surgery the following day. The clinical staff has been nothing short of wonderful, from the cleaning staff all the way through to the neurosurgeon. My mother's life was in the balance and she is nearly back to her old self only 4 days later! I highly recommend this hospital and would place the lives of my children in their capable hands. Valet parking is only $8 and is a hidden gem in Oakland. read more

I just left there at 11:30. I tried to call patient relations was given the run around twice while trying to get the number. I called someone I know in administration and complained to them though I doubt they care. Claire was the worst nurse I've ever had in my whole life. She kept hitting me in the face with the gown while trying to put the ekg leads on me. She was awful. The Indian doctor was so mean and nonchalant. when I asked him to explain to me what was going on with me he gave me this condescending look like "are you a moron" and began speaking slowly like I am a child. I felt so belittled and started to cry and he immediately left the room. the Chinese doctor was more patient and understanding and dried my tears explained things in a way I could understand and then left me alone with Monster Claire who told me "ooookay its your choice" if you don't want to return here. shouldn't she have been asking me whats wrong? and why did I feel that way? the secretary was on a personal call..exposing so much cleavage I thought I was at a strip club. she too, was very short with me. Was accused of only wanting drugs and shelter after being sent to their emergency room from a doctors appointment. It was extremely offensive not only because I am not a drug user, but also because I was dressed professionally (I was supposed to go into work after my doctors appointment that morning) so clearly I'm not living on the streets. The doctor that accused me of wanting drugs never came back in after my pee test came back clean, but the doctor that took over was no better. They discharged me while I was still actively showing the symptoms I came in for and shortly after leaving I lost consciousness, but refused to go back. I will be using my secondary insurance to receive care at AHN hospitals from now on. read more

this review is only in regards to the emergency room experience. I was brought in with a family member after a car accident and rushed thru trauma exams and ct. both were done very quickly. with a large team of staff. seemed very thorough but i cant evaluate the quality of the tests or their appropriateness as i am a non medical person. So this review is just one related to my experience there as an observant client. i was placed in a room, and stayed there without seeing a nurse or a doctor for several hours. No one voluntarily came near me. Door kept wide open and curtains pulled back. My requests for additional blankets for modesty's sake (everyone stares in your room as they pass) had to be shouted at people i assumed were nurses who were speeding by me in the hallway, standing around in groups chatting, eating, or staring at their computer screens. No one responded when i pressed my call button. i was told a dr would come in to check my spine, but no one ever did. Hours later i eventually took off my collar myself. Couldn't stand it anymore. One nurse looked in as she passed by, and i heard her ask another nurse, whats going on with "22" (we are all room numbers here, no names) her collar is off." but no one thought to come in and ask me. Or check to see why. Or replace it. Even though they were right outside my door. From the group in front of my door, I heard all about a woman who apparently was reduced to screaming for a bedpan, and whose bed was soaked with blood. Story was retold with some humor. i can only imagine how desperate she felt, as i was a million times better off and was feeling close to escaping myself. Heard her name, and all about her baby, her sister, her parents and her boyfriend. Eventually, the Dr waltzed in and told me i would be admitted for overnight observation. I declined, and he became angry and impatient with me. ( personal message to dr...just because it isn't YOUR truth, doesn't mean it isnt true.) Then he went out to the nurse or staff person in the hall, and stage whispered to her all about my discharge. She came in VERY shortly thereafter, with discharge papers and i was whisked out of the room. If she was MY nurse, i never saw her before. I went to see my family member, his door was securely closed, and his room temperature was hovering around 45 degrees. And either from shock or freezing he was shaking like a leaf with only one thin sheet covering him. I had to roam the halls to ask for warmed blankets, as no one had answered his call button either. He had been calling for help for sometime. He was also to see the "spine doctor" but they never showed. His IV line was pouring into him like a garden hose, and i had to find someone to tell them it was empty. He asked me to take off his collar and i did so. His nurse D. eventually showed up and said oh yeah, this is the coldest room in the er. yet the two times D. walked in and out, he securely closed his door. we had to keep it open to let some warmth in. He made no remark re the collar removal. I was discharged, he was to stay overnight, and when i called the ER from home and spoke to his ER nurse, i told him my family member was diabetic and hadn't eaten all day and could he please get a sandwich from nutrition for him. He was borderline dismissive, but when i asked him if this was too much, he immediately said he would get a snack for him. But he never did. Nurses on the admitting floor fed him at 11 pm. My forays out into the hall to ask for blankets was startling to say the least, as the halls are filled with masses of moving people speed walking this way or that. it really has such a chaotic feel. And That makes me think their efforts are not organized or efficient. As a final note, the discharge doctor on the admitting floor decided to stop his lasix in his discharge instructions. This was absolutely wrong. Luckily we spoke to PCP immediately, and received proper instructions. read more

I have to agree with the other review here. This place makes you feel like you are a piece of cattle being processed. The size is one thing, but the fact that the staff doesn't seem to know that they are treating humans is sad. Also, she is correct about the wait times. They are incredibly waaaay too long, and nobody informs you as to what is the status of your appointment. If you go here, be ready to feel like a number. read more

The cafeteria has some pretty good food. Seriously - if you are often in hospitals - you will appreciate this. 11th floor - lots of windows, with very nice views. I hope that you do not need to visit often - but if you do, you will appreiate the good food (and choices). read more
