    My baby!
    Kirby S.

I gave birth here back in March so I'll speak on that experience. Overall it went wayyyy better than I ever expected it to go! This was my first baby so I had no clue what I would be in for but all the doctors and nurses made things super smooth and as simple as they could be for me. No issues or disrespect from any staff, I felt taken care of, and 3 months later baby and I are still healthy as ever!

    ER
    Derek P.

Came to the ER tonight, presented to the check in complaining of chest discomfort, rapid heart rate, left arm tingling and facial tingling. Also stated I threw up. Reception asked how long this has been going on, and replied for the past one hour, but has been festering mildly all day. Waited over one hour, thinking I would be seen rather quickly since presenting with symptoms which could have been a heart attack. Checked in at 8:35pm, waited and at 9:40pm decided to leave since I had started feeling better. I find it funny the average wait time at this ER states 28 minutes. Tonight skewed thy average. I would have given zero stars if I could, but the valet working was the only gold star working at this EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT. He offered a bottled water as I waited. Thanks to him. Besides that, I will never return to ER, and will highly deter anyone to go to this ER unless absolutely a last resort.

I am highly impressed and incredibly thankful to be a part of the Allegheny Health Network. From the moment I arrived, the quality of care was evident. The entire staff--from the administrative team to the dedicated doctors, nurses, and surgeons--were not only competent and talented but also genuinely friendly, patient, and attentive. Every question was answered with care, and I always felt respected and prioritized during my recovery. Beyond the medical excellence, the hospital environment itself was superb. The rooms were impeccably clean, and the attention to hygiene was constant and reassuring. Even the food was delicious and provided great comfort during my recovery. I was also deeply touched by the thoughtful details, like the substantial care package and the puzzles provided to help pass the time--a small gesture that made a huge difference in making the long stay feel more manageable. Allegheny General Hospital exceeded every expectation. If you are facing a stay or surgery, I would highly recommend AGH without any hesitation. This is an exceptional institution.

I did not have a choice on the hospital I went to, UPMC was the only place open and I was hardly even conscious when I arrived. For the love of god, if you have any choice on where you get your treatment, GO SOMEWHERE ELSE. All Hospitals are expensive, but usually they are willing to actually work with you on the things they charge you for. UPMC has told me on no less than 4 occasions now that they will absolutely not work with me on my bill. I asked for explanations on things like the 10,000% mark-up on the same nausea medicine I get over the counter for $10, and every single time I'm told "Oh that's what it costs, this is a teaching hospital!". They don't even try to explain duplicate charges. I have been forced to take a ridiculous amount of time off of work to jump through their hoops only to get absolutely no where with them. Bonus points: Apparently the emails they have listed all over their website are not actually in use. They say they'll send you information in the mail, important things like the financial aid application you requested, and then they just won't. But they are real quick to threaten you with collections!

They were such great listeners they had such great knowledge their personalities were incredible and they made sure every need of mine was taken care of with such a sense of urgency in such a sense of caring that I would recommend uPMC to anybody with any health issues. I give floor 8 and floor nine of UPMC 10 out of 10 Stars in would highly highly suggest that if you want some of the best nurses and doctors in Pennsylvania to use this facility.

I witnessed staff making comments that came across as rude, dismissive, and unnecessarily antagonistic, which only escalates frustration rather than resolving concerns. I also heard loud cackling at the nurses station, about a nurses new found sex life- congrats. And a nurse summarizing the all dogs go to heaven movie to her younger colleague who didn't know the movie. Tons of staff walking around eating their Memorial Day party meals that consisted of tons of food around potentially infected patients ((gross)) I chose not to engage in confrontation. Instead, I requested to speak with the charge nurse, made phone calls, submitted concerns to the patient representative, and filed a complaint with the Joint Commission. I also observed patients in hallways without adequate privacy and a constant security presence walking the units. It made me wonder whether some of the aggression and conflict they experience could be reduced if patients felt their concerns were genuinely heard and if they were consistently treated with dignity, respect, and compassion. A culture of mutual respect goes much further than one of confrontation.

My 87-year-old mother, who has congestive heart failure, underwent a scheduled 4-hour surgery to repair both her bladder and bowel. We arrived at 5:00 a.m. for a 7:00 a.m. procedure. We were told by the surgeon that she would recover for approximately three hours, be up walking, eating, and likely discharged the following day. She was finally brought to her room around 2:00 p.m. At that point, she had not eaten in over 24 hours. I called the cafeteria to order her lunch, supper and breakfast to ensure that she would have her meals. When we left later that afternoon, staff were gathered in the lounge talking, and this became a recurring observation throughout her stay. All staff were in their twenties and it brought back memories of the Lord of the Flies. That evening, my mother called me in distress. She had not been walked, was unaware she had a catheter, and was in significant pain. While on the phone with her, we timed her call button--no one responded for 15 minutes. The following day, I attempted multiple times to get updates from a physician, Dr. Erika Ong, and request an additional day of observation, given her condition. Communication was extremely poor--calls go through a general number, and no one identified themselves clearly or provided direct answers or direct call back numbers. When I arrived at the hospital that evening (after a 1.5-hour drive), I discovered my mother had received neither lunch nor dinner. She was also dehydrated, with 3 empty water containers. When my husband raised this concern with staff, instead of addressing the issue, the situation escalated unnecessarily. A nurse accused him of using inappropriate language, which did not occur, and security was called. Meanwhile, the real issue--an elderly patient missing two meals--was not promptly addressed. She was eventually given a microwave pizza at 8:00 p.m. Over the course of her stay, several critical issues arose: * She was not walked for over 24 hours' post-surgery * No one explained the meal ordering system - for which I have attached a photo of the system * Communication from doctors and staff was inconsistent or nonexistent * We were not notified of a heart episode she experienced at 3:00 a.m. * Staff repeatedly avoided providing names or clear answers One nurse, Appithany, and another, Olga, were compassionate and helpful, and I am grateful for their efforts. Unfortunately, they were exceptions. I also attempted to escalate concerns through a patient advocate, but was misinformed, denied the ability to document the conversation, and ultimately never received the promised follow-up. My mother was discharged at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday from a Thursday operation, and it truly felt like an escape from Alcatraz. The entire experience felt chaotic, disorganized, and lacking accountability. Basic patient care--nutrition, mobility, communication--was not consistently provided. This experience highlighted serious concerns about staffing, training, communication, and patient advocacy. I strongly urge families with elderly loved ones to ensure someone is present to advocate on their behalf at all times. I would not feel comfortable taking my family dog for treatment here. This will be escalated to the PA Department of Health as well as Medicare.

The nurses and doctors where fine the receptionists where fine as well. My problem is that they call it a hospital when it really is just a big urgent care facility. After blood work and testing the doctor said that they where not capable of diagnosing my sons problems as they do not have any specialty doctors on staff. What the heck no specialty doctors why even call yourself a hospital???????. The doctors said they where going to transfer him to Wexford Hospital. I do not get it they do thousands and thousands of dollars in tests only to say they can't do anything to help. Then to boot some one is paying for an ambulance to transfer him to the other hospital. If I was you I would avoid this so called hospital like the plague. I will be sure to never go here again. This is not a hospital so do not be fooled into thinking it is. If you have basic problems I am sure they can help, But anything remotely serous there is no way for them to help you. I must say again please do not go here unless you have no serious problems. With that said It was our fault for going here. I would normally give one star but the nurses and even the doctors where very nice even if they could not help. Normally for this level of care I would probably give 3-4 stars. Overall I will give 2 stars which is very generous.
