We recently bought a new (used) car from a local dealership and experienced some oil leakage just a few days after our purchase. I wanted someone other than the dealership to evaluate the damage, just for piece of mind. Levrett was able to get us in the very next day. They were friendly upon drop-off, told me what to expect. I had advised that the car was covered under a power train warranty by the dealer, so if the issue was related to that - i needed the dealer to take care of it. They called me within a couple hours to advise that it was not power train - gave me an estimate & timeframe that it would be complete. They were ready a couple hours earlier than expected & texted me to let me know. (I love a company that can shoot me a text in quick situations where a call is not necessary!) Upon pick-up, I learned that they'd contacted the dealer's service center to find out what work was previously done (to make sure it wasn't an issue with the dealer's work). They made me feel much better about the car we had just purchased, letting us know the issue could have happened at any time - nothing the dealer could have prevented really. I've had mechanics rip me off on the price but these guys not only charged me 4 times the quoted price but didn't even do the work ($2000 to install a carburetor) where they literally bolted it down and connected the linkage but didn't even connect the vacuum lines or start it up. I called Leverett because my Camaro needed a clutch, I just wanted a price however, they would not give me a price over the phone. They said they had to look at it before they would be able to provide a quote. I took it down there to have them look at it. They said it needed a clutch and proceeded to charge me several hundred dollars to tell me that. Their quote was for $2200! The book time to replace a clutch in a Camaro is only four hrs Sounds like they charge $400 an hour. Took my Camaro elsewhere it was only $600 to get my clutch replaced. read more

They charged me $300 for a "transmission inspection" and tried to charge me $9,500 for a rebuild transmission swap Took the old fluid out which was apparently in "awful condition" and instead of putting new fluid in, they put the old back in. Ended up taking it to another shop who fixed the problem by clearing the code, putting in new fluid and filter, and van has been driving perfectly fine since. Don't go here unless you have endless amount of money you can throw at these guys. Pretty much all of their "5 star reviews" are fake and written by Bots it's pretty easy to spot. Bummed they got me for 300 dollars but at least they didn't get me for 10 grand read more

What do you do when you decide to buy a 1991 One Ton Dodge Van to drive out to Burning Man and aren't exactly sure it's in road ready condition? You take it to a reputable mechanic and get them to give it a thorough inspection! That's exactly where my relationship with Skip Thompson began 3 years ago, and ever since he's been servicing all of my vehicles. When it came to the van, knowing we were headed to no mans land in the desert, Skip was sure to do a top to bottom review of absolutely every vital piece of the vehicle. About 24 hours later he called me with a full report, including which things I needed to address immediately and which could easily wait. Skip performed the necessary stuff and thanks to his great work, our van Bertha, as we affectionately refer to her, has made not one, but three safe trips to the playa! On another occasion a belt randomly came flying off my Mazda when starting it up in a parking lot. Because I know nothing about cars I thought I could just put the belt back on, but when I realized that wasn't the case, I made an emergency call to Skip! I had the car towed to him, and 24 hours later I had a diagnosis and solution, and less than 24 hours later the car was fixed and back in my driveway! When I recently decided to pickup a 99 Chevy Pickup, Skip was the first person I called. He was happy to perform another top to bottom inspection for me, which revealed that this old truck had been well cared for, and nothing needed to be done. Regardless, when something does happen, I know exactly where I'll be taking it. Skip already did it all from his mobile shop, but I'm happy that he purchased this longstanding business, and has moved his already amazing operation into a full service shop. Called Levrett and received a verbal quote to service my transmission, transfer case and two differentials. Never got a total number, but it seemed to be a little over $800. John said General Motors specified some expensive fluids, and from prior engine oil changes, I had to agree. John was very pleasant and conversant while I waited for my ride. Having spent about 15 years as a vendor to automotive repair shops, I know a lot the business, and we had a pleasant conversation. It wasn't until I got home and reviewed the bill, which had grown to a little over $900, that I realized I had been taken. According to the General Motors labor guide, the four components they serviced called for 2.8 hours labor. At Levrett's current rate of $133.78, that should have totaled $374.58. Instead I was charged 4.0 hours, for a total of $535.12, an over charge of $160.54. I was also charged $50.41 for "Shop Supplies". They might have used two rags on my truck,and maybe some oil cleaner, so why the $50.41 charge? Fool me once... read more

I usually give every business a chance before I pass judgement on them and in this case, I gave John two chances. I took my SUV there for transmission service (change screen and new fluid) and possibly add an extra cooler. I was told I could bring it in, which I did and assumed this was the family owned business I had dealt with in the distant past. Little did I know that the shop has nothing to do with Levrett! I showed up in the morning left my car there and walked around town, later I got a text asking where my wheel locks were? I said brakes are almost new, and I wanted the transmission service only. John stated that they do a courtesy check on all areas of the car. I said OK, and within a few minutes got a text and said urgent repair needed rear main leaking. I went to the shop inspected the leak, as the car is always parked in my garage and no signs of any leak on the floor, and I have parked this car there for five years and no leaks. I inspected the leak, and told John it could have been the oil filter which loosened up from driving bad roads. I declined service on that but gave the OK for the removal of transfer case and transmission service as a gasket was needed for the transfer case. I had to rent a car and picked up the car the next day which was late in the afternoon. No leaks, but transmission temperature was still very high in traffic, and it was winter! I told John about this and figured I would wait and see. In the mean time I decided to have the same service and oil change on my wifes car. I talked to John and we scheduled an appointment for the next week at 9 in the morning. I called and said I may be a bit late and he said there would be no problem. I was there at 9 05 and gave John the necessary info and proceeded to burn 4 hours in Reno while I assumed they were working on my wifes car. I came back at one and saw the car out front, assumed it was done, and went inside to pay. To my surprise there was no work done, and I wasted 4 hours running around Reno while I assumed the car was being worked on. I asked John for the keys, and as usual he said what was the name??? I had been in there many times and he forgot my name, even though I had been in his shop, and now I had wasted my whole day in Reno while the car just sat outside. I held my tongue, and politely left the office, and as far as customer service, never again! Not a phone call nothing, just a big waste of time after making a special trip down from Tahoe, early in the morning. I thought a repeat customer could have a little respect, but this repeat customer will never come back! Stay away from this shop, free inspection is nothing but a sham! read more

All around really awesome place. Being a woman, am always nervous that auto places will treat me like like...well, a woman. But John was incredibly nice from the start, super welcoming and straight forward which I appreciate. I highly recommend these guys! The only down fall is that I got an oil change done around March and I just had it inspected again recently (May). I was told that it's leaking oil from a broken cap and seal. So now I leak oil and have to constantly check the levels until my next change, which is extra annoying since I live in a rental and am responsible for fluids staining the driveway. Not sure if I'd get an oil change done again here because of that, but definitely love the customer service from them. read more

Levrett has been in town for many many years. Just that speaks well of them. You do not survive in business that many years if you are not excellent and honest. John has kept my car running in excellent shape while being honest and sensible about what to fix and what not to fix on an older car. He has recommended NOT fixing some things because it wouldn't make financial sense, being too expensive to fix and being somewhat minor. Most importantly, they are HONEST!! They might not be the least expensive in town, so if you just want a cheap fix that will not last long or be warranted well, then you should find some cheap place to fix your car. I had an unexpected transmission code turn up that my normal shop could not repair. They referred me to John Levrett (owner) and told me how they have been in business since 1941 and have never done them wrong. So even though they informed me they had a LOT of work ahead of me, they were able to get me in. They said they would call me the next day when they could get to my car, but called about an hour after I dropped it off, told me what needed to be done, and that parts would need to be ordered. (this was a Thursday afternoon) I okayed the work and told them "See you next week!" knowing that they do not work weekends and understanding there were many cars in front of me. They called me Friday morning to tell me my car was done!! I was shocked and ecstatic!! I could not have had a better experience with them! HIGHLY recommend!! My car is running GREAT NOW!! Prices are reasonable too! I would defninitely return to them - but hope that I do not frequent tranny shops! :) read more

Levrett Transmission does quality work, but I also got gouged. For a front and rear differential job was $324.09. This included a 4-oz Equa-Torque additive they charged me $31.71 for without asking. It sells at Walmart for $6.70. And they charged me $74.16 for gear oil! Lesson learned: Don't trust anyone whose business cards say "Honest - Fair." read more

I carried my f150 transmission in for a quote for rebuild. They charged me $150 to tear it down and gave me a quote of $2000...for a transmission available on the web for 7-13 hundred dollars. I got my transmission back in pieces and missing the pump gears, the pan and possibly other parts. (I am not a transmission tech). The owner had me drive 60 miles round trip for the wrong pan, then refused to pay for a replacement or even respond to the queries from the Better Business Bureau. Stay away from this place...stay far away. read more
