We drove nearly four hours to attend this production, as I've always wanted to see Next to Normal on stage. I had never heard of the Lyric, so I checked their promo materials on instagram prior to investing in the drive and cost. It was worth it. The production was outstanding, beautifully staged, and there was so so so much talent. The lighting and scenic design were modern, sleek, and minimalist. The show should have been sold out because so much talent was involved. They had concessions and friendly front of house staff. Our only complaint was that we were on the front row, and the monitor speakers were places along the apron of the stage, which blocked action center stage terribly. If you have the opportunity to see a production here, do it. You won't regret.

This 606 seat performing arts theater is part of the Cobb County Civic Center complex. The main parking lot is huge, so there shouldn't be a parking issue for any production or event at the theater. The lobby, in my opinion, is way too small for the theater. We showed up an hour before show time, and got our tickets from the impromptu Will Call table. There were some padded benches in the middle of the tiny lobby, so we, and 14 other people, sat there until the theater doors were opened about 30 minutes before the performance. Theater goers continued to enter the lobby, and it got so noisy and packed that people walking by kept brushing up against me, and a few of them actually stepped on my shoes while I was sitting. Like I stated, the lobby is way too small for the theater. I think that they should limit the number of people allowed in the lobby. When both sets of doors leading from the lobby to the theater (one set of doors on each side of the lobby) opened, people started streaming out of the lobby. We walked into the theater to find our seats, which were towards the back of the theater. Nice padded seats! There are only 17 rows of seats, and everyone has a clear view of the stage. ADA seating is allowed in the first and last rows, where there are no steps. However, everyone in the other rows need to be able to walk up and down steps to get to and from their seats. The sound system is very good, as is the lighting. From what I saw the theater is well maintained. This is a nice place to see shows without having to pay big bucks.

Otherwise the decor was cool. The rest of this review is about the show & how it played out in the venue. I saw a show called F.E.M. It is a coming of age TRUE story of a black gay man naked Erik Dillard who was adopted, bullied & finally living his best life at age 40 in Atlanta. With that in mind, the props crew was definitely set to handle a lot of tasks. They had giant pictures, chairs, and other furniture that represented Erik's ENTIRE life in 2 1/2 hours. I found the staff overwhelmingly professional. They alone get a 5/5. I just think the seats need cushions & maybe 20+ minutes for the intermission would be great for the one bathroom per gender.

She was able to break down advanced acting techniques in ways that were easy to understand. Her love for acting and for her students really shined through as she addressed each person by name and remembered what they specifically needed to work on. I was blown away by the precision in which she administered critiques, while remaining kind and encouraging. Coaches of this caliber are similar to the ones I've worked with on Broadway sets. I couldn't believe I stumbled upon this gem in a local Marietta studio. Her knowledge transcended the stage as she explained how to apply certain acting techniques to everyday life. She was kind enough to help me with a presentation I needed to deliver at work. I followed her advice, not expecting much, but actually ended up receiving a promotion. I hardly write YELP reviews, but I just had to share after that. Kia E. is one of the most talented and outstanding acting coaches out there.

The seats also used to be clean and in great condition. I'm not sure what has happened, but the last two times we've visited, the condition of the seats has noticeably declined. Today, the middle seat in the row I purchased had ripped upholstery, a brown stain, and the cushion looked wet and sticky. Thankfully, there were only six other people in the theater, so we were able to move to different seats. On a positive note, the staff was friendly and helpful. I just hope the theater addresses the condition of the seats, as it used to be much better maintained.

We've been tracking for a couple weeks…read moretrying to decide which weekend to make the drive out for a show; it's about an hour from our home. The Saturday showtimes seem to be 10am and 1:30pm. We were aiming for a puppet show last weekend but landed on a science show this weekend and I'm so glad we did! We got to see "Noreen the Science Queen" and engage in a live show with her. Not only was she amazing, but it was so wonderful to expose our girls to a woman in STEM and, more special for them, a Black woman in STEM. After the show, Noreen the Science Queen greeted the attendees in the lobby. She was open for pictures, and was selling both science kits for at home experiments and copies of her book. She is also available for birthday parties!! Now about the Cultural Arts Center, they currently have two exhibits: (1) there is an art show in the lobby in honor of Juneteenth and visitors get to vote on their favorite three (2) there is an exhibit of toys and games from the 1800s on the second floor. We didn't go up to check it out.
