Still one of my favorite spots to go for a cheap beer, Alligator hasn't changed much in the years I've been coming. It was always the nicer of the two (RIP crocodile), with ample seating at the bar, booths up in front you don't really stick to, and a large back room. Oh, and yes, you still get a pizza ticket with every drink you buy, which is one hell of a deal*. I hesitate to call Alligator a dive because it's really not. Yes you can get a beer and a shot for 6$ if that's your thing, and yes they have cheap mix drinks, but it still doesn't quite check all the boxes off to be a dive (maybe a new age hipster dive?). Either way, the staff is always super chill, there's a pool table, and they do karaoke a few nights a week. TL;DR, pop off the L, grab a seat at the bar, and enjoy cheap liquor accompanied by surprisingly decent pizza with every drink you order. Hidden gem alert!!!! Thank you MTA for kicking me off the L train because of .... no excuse, they just kicked us off and sent the train back to the city. However, I am a glass half full kinda woman, so I whipped out my phone and yelped nearby bars to wait out the L train. Great Spot in Downtown Brooklyn!! I was unfortunate enough to be kicked off a train (who hasn't in 2022 NYC?) at Metropolitan Ave. and, rather than stand on the platform waiting with 200 people for the trains to run again, I got out and checked out this bar right around the corner from the Subway station. It was the BEST part of my day! Not only is there a full bar with cocktails, outdoor seating AND a pool table, there's also a FREE brick oven, freshly made to order, personal cheese pizza with every drink order! That wasn't a typo. With every drink order you can get, not a slice, but an entire personal cheese pizza (about 8 inches) FOR FREE! You can also add additional toppings (pepperoni, artichoke hearts, mushrooms, olives, bacon, garlic, jalapeño, pineapple, spinach or sausage). I got the artichoke hearts, my sis got the pepperoni and we were not disappointed. It was tasty and crisp but not burnt. Just the way I like it. We got there not too long after they opened so there was just one bartender and the pizza maker but they were both friendly and excellent. This place is as good as dive bars can get. I was quite pleasantly surprised that I had a blast considering that this place is located in Brooklyn! I'm not clear on how accessible by public transportation this location is, since we drove, but if you find yourself in the area, stop in. It looks small from the outside until you realize there are several sections. Upon entry, after getting carded, you see the bar to the right and a number of seats/booths to the left. Keep walking and you'll run into the billiards table across from the pizza section. Walk past that and you will find the bathrooms followed by the karaoke room filled with a stage and screen. It really has a bit of fun for everyone. The clientele is diverse and the atmosphere is relaxed. The bathroom is divey, and the line for it gets long so plan accordingly. Drinks are inexpensive and they have a number of beers on tap. With each drink purchase you earn a ticket that is redeemable for a personal pizza which helps to keep your night going. The patrons and staff are all very friendly too. Well it's also part of the bar/dancefloor but it's quite the area although it's one table. Games can get intense and when you're in that area you forget the rest of Alligator Lounge. Finally, and the reason for my Yelp search bringing me here... The backroom which hosts the karaoke! I sooooo wanted to get up on stage but the crowd was young with their selections and I haven't attempted many JayZees or Rhiannas or Fugees or Maroon5s yet AND somehow I didn't think they would have taken too kindly to my Frank Sinatras and what nots, I sat this one out. After a dozen visits to their sister location Crocodile Lounge on 14th street in Manhattan, I finally decided to give Alligator a shot on a recent trip into Williamsburg. Like Crocodile, the rules are the same: buy a drink = free personal pizza. Drink prices are standard for a city dive bar, BUT, if you read their menu carefully, you can find major bargains ($4 rolling rock, $5 Narraganset, $6 beer and well liquor shot combos, etc). The inside of Alligator is much different than its sister spot. For example, there is Less graffiti and more fresh paint. The ceilings are a bit higher seeing as the manhattan Crocodile is a basement bar. There is much more natural light and a patio area Alligator. In short, both locations have their distinct charms; my take is if you want a little more space to breathe, I would suggest Alligator in Williamsburg, and if you want that classic underground dive bar vibe, shoot for the Croc! The pizza at Alligator is SLIGHTLY better than its sister spot - my reasoning for this is because the pizzas are made fresh to order. For those of you who have never experienced this before at either location: 1) buy your drinks 2) collect your FREE pizza ticket OR pay bartender $1 for your pizza toppings (optional) 3) bring your ticket(s) to the pizza zone 4) TIP THE PIZZA MAN (do this or else your pizza will take twice the time and let's face it, when you are buzzed you want fast pizza) 5) pick up pizza or, come get it when the bell rings During really busy times there may be pre made, if you show up before 9:30pm Chances are you're getting it fresh from the oven. Beers were cold and selections were vast. They had my favorite Leinenkugel on tap so I was very happy for sure. Service was prompt and friendly, YOUR ID WILL BE CHECKED - This is standard operating procedure at both locations so come prepared. Karaoke many nights a week at the Williamsburg location. For $1 extra, you can get any extra toppings, but I opted for a regular pizza. The pie is actually pretty small, like the smallest pie at Pizza Hut but it was still a great deal.
