My husband and I stopped by the David Zwirner galleries on 19th and 20th Streets last Saturday, and…read moreI was really glad we did. David Zwirner is one of the prestige art galleries in NYC. They have the 19th St and 20th St galleries in Chelsea, as well as a gallery on Walker Street and another on E 69th. We stopped by the gallery on W 19th to see "The Great Unseen Collection: A Selection of Works from Joel and Carole Bernstein," which was great and included works by Milton Avery, Romare Bearden, Audrey Flack, Alex Katz, and Alice Neel! (The exhibition closes on June 13 if you want to see it.) The gallery was on the smaller side but very minimalist, clean, and beautiful. (Across the street from 525 W 19th, is another David Zwirner gallery at 533 W 19th that has an exhibit of Lisa Yuskavage, so stop by that location as well if you're interested!) After our visit, I signed up for David Zwirner's email newsletter so I can keep up with future exhibits. The gallery's shows are museum-quality, and I look forward to visiting again in the future!

Maybe not the biggest or the fanciest of galleries, but it's on the Bowery, which means it's within…read morewalking distance of SoHo and NoHo. It could be part of a wicked gallery walk in this area. I viewed their "Horrorpilation" series. I didn't even know that was a real word, but yes! it is! And the subject matter here was perfect . . . creepy, unsettling, otherworldly. The gallery is wide, open. And honestly, it's lit better than any gallery I've ever seen. So often galleries have glaring lights that make it difficult to view or take photos of works. This setup was perfect. The wall colors were also amazing. Moody, dark, luscious. Perfect accompaniment to the artworks. The colors, the artwork, the lighting . . . this was so well thought out. I know The Hole is one of my new go-to galleries.

Get your money up front vendors and as far as artists if they do not pau us they problary will not pay you. This theft of services. Just two blocks down from the York Street F station lies CreativeLab. I mosied on down there a few…read moredays ago for an art show they hosted, The Bad Words Experiment. The space is roomy enough to accommodate over 100 art lovers, free wine lovers, and people lovers! The works on display were artist interpretations of "Bad Words" and were extremely varied, in both medium and theme. One of my favorites was by artist Deirdre Merrigan. She had stuffed some fabric in the form of black lips, mouth open to reveal a pool of shimmering, colorful Swarovski crystals. Amazing. Somebody prepare a Swarovski crystal bath for me, please. Unfortunately, the exhibit was a one night deal, but I'm sure that CreativeLab will be hosting many more events in the future!

I haven't been to the ICP since they moved to the Lower Eastside. I love photography exhibits and…read moreapproach them differently than I do art museums. I take paintings pretty much for face value, rarely reading accompanying plaques. Not so with photography. ICP's current exhibit features Edward Burtynsky and Sheida Soleimani. Both very different, both fascinating with subjects worth reading about as you take in their photographs. Gallery space is impressive, located on the second and third floors. There's a coffee shop and gift store -- primarily books -- on the ground level. Admission is $18 for adults, with discounted rates for seniors and military. If you obtain tickets through NYC Culture Pass, there's no charge. You may see two addresses, one on Essex Street, the other 84 Ludlow. The gallery is on Ludlow, between Delancey and Broome.

Entry is like…read more$15 for adults, so a skosh less than you'd pay at a bigger museum, but just a bit more than I'd personally pay for the size of this place. If you have like a senior or kid's discount, or a student (?) discount, it would be worth it though. Museum is 2 floors, and fully jam packed with stuff to look at. Every room you go into has either posters from various eras, and/or explanations of the context for those posters, so you're not just appreciating the art in a vacuum. What I liked is that even on a Saturday afternoon, the place was relatively quiet and empty, so we were able to wander around and look at all the cool stuff mostly undisturbed. Bathrooms are spotlessly clean. Cafe is cute and has lots of little chairs to sit on and take a load off before you go exploring further. As of right now, they have a retrospective on black cinema, from the silent films to the black and white films to the technicolor films. There are posters for minstrel shows, posters for "All colored" (AKA, all black and brown people in the cast, so that unwitting racists don't wander in there and clutch their pearls over seeing brown and black folks not playing the parts of servants) casts, and even a couple of displays of paraphernalia from the era, such as blackface pancake makeup/greasepaint used on stage and film. The entrance to the space has these posters from the Czechoslovakia tourism board to come visit their country at the dawning of their founding. These were gorgeous posters, some of which mentioned the 60 2/3 % discount off the return journey ticket. I have no clue what the significance of that amount is. They were facing the gift shop, so while that person or persons you came with go look at tchotchkes , bric-a-brac, and curios long past when they should realize that they can buy most of the stuff online and not have to lug it around the city, you have some more stuff to look at. Mind you, the prints, postcards, and other reproductions of the posters are not something you can easily buy online. That's worth the trip to the gift shop if you like that sort of thing as decoration. The prints are on good quality paper, and the colors are crisp and well laid down. They're absolutely beautiful. At $1.50 per post card, you're paying a bit of money, but these are really beautiful and worthy of display. In the basement level, there's a large exhibition of war propaganda posters encouraging folks to donate books to the boys overseas (or "over there" as they called it repeatedly). Several soldiers would read in their spare time when they had long bouts of hurry up and wait. This was especially true of the navy people. They'd have long stretches of quiet where they'd read to pass the time. Again, the breadth and variety of the posters (some even from German sources, who were also asking the same) was impressive. Then there was the special exhibit of the AIDS epidemic posters from the early 1990s. If you'd not lived through that era, where the fear was all over the place, and the news had several stories of folks dying of AIDS left and right, having that curated collection of posters and adverts was an important reminder of where we were just 30 years ago. In the 1990s, you'd see news stories of random people dying of AIDS. One girl caught it from her dentist, and was all over the news (Kimberly Bengalis). Others caught it from parents. It ran rampant all over the world, and struck down people from all walks of life, regardless of race or sexuality. Watching the posters that were plastered up on the NYC walls during the epidemic, calling to question the inaction of people in power, asking for folks to contribute money, and several pleas to practice safer sex was a chilling reminder of what HIV/AIDS was for many many years. This was a well curated collection, and I'm glad I got a chance to see it. I'd say that the time I spent in the museum was well worth it.

They opened in 2019, hosting a range of poignant exhibits, the current being no exception: ** Posters from Black American Stage & Screen ** New York's Fight Against Aids Posters represent signs of the time, sometimes with language that makes you cringe. The artwork is usually beautiful and always eye-catching, necessary to relay the reason the poster was commissioned. In addition to featured exhibits you'll see nostalgic posters that make you say "I remember that!" For me, it was rock-&-roll/concert art from the 60s and 70s. Located on 23rd Street between 6th and 7th Avenues, there are a number of subway and bus stops a short walk away. Free admission on Fridays.

A true hidden urban gem. A great place to get lost in. We had some empanadas from the truck. Not super, lacked flavor and cost $5 per. Better selections and places around the area. This will be one of my favorite places in Jersey City. We will visit them in future events and get lost again. Planning to visit them soon. Highly recommended!

Blown away by the amazing art they have on display!…read more Went on a guided tour and our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and friendly. I believe they offer free tours once a day - call and inquire as you can't walk around freely. Especially loved the John Chamberlain photographs where he used a wide lux camera to create "self-portraits of the nervous system." Would definitely recommend!
