I've been styled by at least five different staffers, and every one (with the single exception noted above) has been attentive, cheerful, and smoothly gentle-handed. I stumbled into Buckhorn when my wife and I were seeking a shop to cut off her long, sable hair in one great swipe, for donation to Locks of Love. Despite her having done that before, she was turned down by two shops in a row who couldn't accept the possibility of her overwhelming regret. "Ah ha!," says I. "A gay-friendly barbershop on Cap Hill will man up for this!" Indeed they did. Cut her remaining hair into a wickedly cute bob, while they were at it. They've been doing her hair ever since. Pretty soon, I started booking with Buckhorn, myself. Unlike my accustomed Asian nail salon/hair butchers, these guys (and gals) don't turn a short haircut into "military minus" and unlike the old-school smock factories, I don't have to endure racist and sexist tirades from angry senior citizens who feel automatic kinship with the short-haired white guy. Stylists at Buckhorn are smart, funny, and accomplished professionals. It's a joy to spend a little time there. Pro tip: the online booking system is a PITA, particularly if you book from a pad or phone screen. The hack is to simply call, and set up your appointment directly with the receptionist. When I got…read morethere, there was nobody at the front desk (no biggie) someone walked up and asked if I had an appointment, when I confirmed my name he said my barber would be "with me soon" and as he was walking away I ask where I could sit and wait and he pointed out the bench behind me . The barber walked in from outside and confirmed my name and gestured to his station. I asked him where I could hang my coat and bag since I had just gotten off work which is when he pointed to the hooks by his mirror . (I'm used to this information being given to me without having to ask) once I made myself comfy I showed him pictures of the haircut I wanted and then tried to show him pictures of how I wanted my facial hair. He interrupted me and said "we would address the facial hair after the haircut" in a very dismissive tone . He cut my hair the way he interpreted the photos which was frustrating since he didn't ask to see them again to make sure he got the details right, they weren't . Same with my facial hair, it wasn't how I wanted it . It was done in half the time I'm used to it taking to get my haircut and the worst part was that I sat in silence the entire time . He didn't ask me a single question or tried to connect with me in any way, which is bizarre for a new client experience . I sat there and watched him cut my hair I don't even remember what this persons voice sounded like, I was so uncomfortable. At the end of the cut he asked me if I wanted it styled and I declined but I did want to restock on curl cream since I had ran out. He massaged some into my hair and proceeded to point to the product wall where I could find it without it showing me the product container . As I was blindly looking for it there was two guys at the front desk watching me struggle and after a few moments of not finding it I finally asked them which one the curl cream was, they pointed it out to me and I grabbed one to checkout . They gave me my total and I paid for the service with no conversation from them either . They didn't ask me if I enjoyed the service they didn't ask me if I wanted to reschedule they didn't even smile or try to interact with me at all I felt like I was not wanted there . As I walked out I had an eerie feeling like I was being watched and when I turned around, what do you know, the two men at the counter were staring at me and didn't break when I looked back at them . Super bizarre behavior from everyone I interacted with, I would never go back .
