Then we would continue to AP to eat lunch and feed the ducks which the kids loved to do. Averill is a nice, peaceful spot to escape the rat race for a short while and recharge before continuing with the stress and demands of daily life. Many students, unfortunately, live in foster homes that rarely take the children out into the community to learn how to function in the REAL world. Too many are placed in front of the TV when they are not at school, just being fed and receiving the bare minimum of personal care so CBI is important for them to be able to function in the community after they become adults and age out from qualifying for foster care anymore. The benches by the lake or the gazebo located in the upper part towards the northeast part of AP are especially restful areas to regain your sense of sanity and to recharge. If you happen to be in Pedro, bring a snack and beverage so you can spend time with the ducks and enjoy some downtime in a peaceful place.

Started off someplace else and just continued on to see and stop off at all the locations nearby. There's a good amount of parking along the street as well as some along the neighborhood. The park itself is overly big but it does have a good size to it. The nice massive trees lined the area. There's a nice little path along the sides where it looks out to the Pacific Ocean and the cliffs below. It was low tide so seeing the tide pools was quite beautiful. Along the path are little covered area which are label by number. Like mini covered patio with a table and seat. They too all looks out to the water. I believe there was a total of 8 seating enclosures along the path. Also, loads of squirrels roaming the place like it's nothing. They are not scared of you so be warn. Clearly there were signs not to feed the wildlife but there was people out with bags of peanuts feeding them. In the middle of the park is a little stage area and with benches. I'm sure they have theatre in the park happening if that's set up. And a playground around the side of it. There's also a lighthouse which is a focal point of the park. Situated right in the middle which now double as a museum. It's a cute park that I never knew about. Decent size for picnics or a nice wander around. The view alone along the path was spectacular. The cliff edge is dangerous so practice caution. Common sense, but they also had signs posted about suicides. It's a cute neighborhood park as along the front are homes right across the street.

*2020 Pandemic Review*…read more Came out here for an outdoor workout as the pandemic continues and the governor gives orders to shit gyms down again. Sigh..... Met up here with some workout buddies where we set up stations with workout equipment. There was plenty grass area, a wide path for walkers or runners and even some workout stations for use when the pandemic forces the city to tape them off. There is plenty of parking. It's pretty clRestrooms are near but they seem to need a code to open and the city seems to have locked them close for now. I'm sure pre pandemic they were open to the public. Anyway, this is a great place to get some fresh air, take the dog out for a walk,l or go for a walk/run. So yeah, get your heart rate up and enjoy this membership free outdoor greenery!

On Juneteenth I attended a celebration at the Korean Bell of Friendship to celebrate freedom by…read morehelping ring the bell. It was a wonderful day, and one I recommend for others to attend, not only to feel the vibrations of the bell when it is hit with a large hanging tree trunk, but also to celebrate the liberation that was given to a criminally oppressed people. And to also understand that liberation, although won at battles, still has not full embraced and enveloped all. So that bell has not fully been rung, and thus we must continue, until we hear the greatest knell in history the one that indicates that all humans have an unfettered chance to reach their best future with confidence. The celebration was sponsored by local political players. Suitably, there were a lot of speeches. But I never hate a speech just because its long. I genuinely hear speeches because they might contain words that move me into action or new perspective, and thus I always try to hear them to understand their value. One of the most memorable speeches of the day, was a person who explained that freedom and liberty has not reached all modern day people (duh!) because freedom, true freedom, means that all have a fair and equitable chance to attain economic prosperity. And from my limited perspective, what she said made sense, a whole lot of it. A person might have the freedom to wear what they chose, to eat what they crave, to dance in their style and funk, to offer their devotion to their deity. However, if all these freedoms do not include a chance to build wealth, without external interruption that is driven by who a person is, then freedom is superficial. Yes, money is the root of all evil, but money is also the foundation for legacy, protection and choice, and, well, freedom. And thus, she reminded all present that we must continue to fight against injustice and thus the bell rang and made each of us an instrument of peace. Beyond speeches from political leaders there was also songs performed by vocalists- a mother and daughter. A lot was happening fast, and sometimes the sound system gave up, so I am afraid I did not get their names. But I do remember them singing a song, right before the bell rung that had the following lyrics: "What would you do, if you had nothing to fight for and nothing to die for?" What would a person do in a world marked by substantial peace? Would we be happy or would we miss the fight? Meaning is the gift of the battle the persistence needed to continue even when all seems at rest? Injustice has created warriors that understand that a white flag will never be planted. The day was meant to celebrate freedom and deliver of message of positive togetherness as the moment celebrated Juneteenth using Korean spirt. But the speeches brought the seemingly opposing concepts together using the thread of a universal recognition that freedom is a wonderful thing. This link was greatly conveyed but fell short in the Mexican sweetbreads that had small Juneteeth flags planted on them. I know I am being petty because Mexican bread can be used to celebrate Juneteenth, for sure I get that. But I would have rather had celebratory bites from the Black/African American community. I know I am being petty, but, hey, that is my freedom. That choice seemed more convenient rather than being connected to the greater purpose of freedom. The last activity of the celebration was ringing the actual bell. Like 7 people, grabbed the wooden log. And we gently slammed it into the bell. The bell rung with vibrations that my skin could feel. We could slightly hug the bell to have ur bodies feel the vibrations. And the experience was memorable. I do not know how many people have the opportunity to hug a bell as it sends off vibration after being hit. But if you have the opportunity seize it, I think you will be a better person for it, or at least, know what ringing feels like on the skin not just the ear drums. As I walked back to the car, I enjoyed the blue views and ocean breeze. I also saw a kite flying high. Yes, it had a string to it, but it was flying free.

Plus it's been decades since I was last around this area. There's so many stops along the way during our drive which this was the first along the path. It's a nice decent size park that it part of. A good amount of parking in the lot next to the basketball courts. Right along the bell is a massive grassy knoll where people were enjoying picnics and laying out. Of course today was beautiful but it was quite windy. Didn't help that the park was little higher than the rest so it made the wind a bit more aggressive. The focal point, the massive bell. With a walkway that leads you to the prize possession. Right in the middle looking out to the Pacific Ocean, she sits there on full display. The bright beautiful color of the details painted was a sight to see. Stairs leading up to the bell where you could walk around. It is roped off. Regardless whatever side you're looking at, it's was quite amazing. Something like this on a hill that's part of the city. If you walk down the grassy knoll, the view of the pacific ocean and cliffs were spectacular. Having a seat and just taking it all in was nice. It was windy so it did get cold but on a nice sunny and clear day, you could see miles and miles of the coastline and tide pools. These little hidden spots in the city are cute when you find them. There's also a little playground around the corner from the bell by the exit and entrance.

He has a horn with him everywhere he goes, but why bring your dog to the park if you know they're aggressive? Another big lady with a Doberman that's aggressive over the ball. Again, your dog is the problem so don't yell at other people's dogs. I plan on calling the cops the next time I see them. Ruins a great park with such a beautiful space for pets with good owners. I've been coming here for years and it's funny to see who thinks they're in charge. Gorgeous place to hang out with your pup. It gets rowdy and crowded so if you don't have a high tolerance for that, go somewhere else.

Have had my dog attacked 3x's in 8yrs. Once by two large huskies when my girl (spayed and on a leash 200ft away) were rushed and we were both attacked. Once when she was 17yrs by 3 small dogs. And once by 3 doodles running far from the older owners which I took photos and bumped into another park goer that stayed her dog was attacked by them the week prior. I did get a couple photos a a small video. A city worker tried to help me. He had me email him photos and videos and said he would scout them out and kick them out of the park. There's a woman that goes almost every day with a car full of dogs she lets out way before she fully parks. She will not watch her dogs. She's there to chat with people and drink from her Stanley cup. If you say anything she will get very vulgar and scream. We we stopped going. It was too dangerous. No one follows the rules. Every owner is on their phone ignoring their dogs. They will all blame you that your dog is on a leash and that their dogs don't like leashed dogs... what??? I'm walking and hiking the trails... so my leashed dog is at fault because you're in the parking lot and your doodles or the dogs dumped from the car are roam the park hundreds of feet from your turned back?? Okay. No Ty. I'd rather walk up and down our streets in safety.

This park is located on Gaffey between 34th & 36th Streets. S. Gaffey Street in San Pedro is a main thoroughfare. If you want to stop here, it's probably easiest if you turn into the parking lot when heading North because the parking spaces are angled. I've stopped here a few times curious to see what's out there at that moment. I've seen a cruise ship leave twice. You can see the cranes in the distance. There used to be viewing telescopes, but they were gone when I just went in Jan. 2026. There is a grassy area and a bench here. No picnic tables. For me, this park is suitable mainly for taking in the views. I probably wouldn't choose to picnic here. This vantage point is better suited for sunrise as it faces eastward. You could come for sunset, but you won't actually see the sun setting. The glow could be beautiful. Or, just come at night when the harbor and beyond is lit up! Nearby places to visit which are notable are the Korean Friendship Bell, Marine Mammal Care Center, Point Fermin Lighthouse, and Cabrillo Beach Museum.

This is a very quaint and beautiful area and basically stretches from Point Fermin to the end of…read morePaseo Del Mar where the street dropped into the ocean a few years back. Though the county took an epically long time to fix it, the street has since been repaired, but they chose not to reopen the street. Before, Paseo Del Mar was accessible to Western Avenue. Like many of the neighbors, I am glad that they chose to keep it closed. In the past, people would speed down this street with little disregard for those walking, running, or biking. Lots of people use this route to run or walk and also walk their dogs. Most people are friendly and will wave or say good morning as they go by. There are 2 little mini parks along this path that people can relax at, in addition to going down to Point Fermin park, where the famous lighthouse is located. I've seen some people sit and have picnics or sit in their cars and enjoy the views. I've also seen some of the neighbors have a house party and people overflow to the parks. The sunrises and sunsets are amazing and at times, you can hear the water crashing below. Many of the homes over here are beautiful and some are in need of renovations, but either way the eclecticness of the neighborhood comes together beautifully. For the most part, people take good care of their homes. There are some losers who park and smoke weed right here and try to look all innocent as you go by, but it's reeking from their car, so you know what they're doing. So yes, this area does attract some riff-raff, but for the most part, I've never had an issue working out over here whether it's daylight or night. It's a pretty safe area and the police often drive back and forth down here and throughout the neighborhoods.
