I'll start by saying I hate taking photos. The only time I've ever done professional photos was my wedding, and even then I was hesitant. But having a new baby, I knew I'd regret not capturing these early days -- and I'm so glad I found Alonya. I was looking for natural, candid moments -- nothing overly posed or stiff -- but also knew I'd need some direction! Alonya struck the perfect balance. She gently guided us when we needed it but never made it feel forced. The whole session felt easy and natural -- which is not something I ever thought I'd say about taking photos. I'm also someone who feels a bit weird about having a stranger in my home, but from the moment she walked in she made the atmosphere feel warm, calming, and made us (and baby!) feel completely at ease. This is a review of Alonya'a photography mentorship (not photo taking). - I had little to no experience in photography before working with Alonya. She helped me pick out the appropriate camera and lenses to buy, and weighed the benefits of different styles against their cost, convenience, appropriate use, purpose etc. It was enormously helpful to have someone walk me through even the most basic principles of owning a mirrorless digital camera. - I felt the benefits of her mentorship almost immediately: I could take much better photos and knew how to edit them in Lightroom in a much more time-efficient way than if I had been left to my own devices (ie youtube and reddit forums). I could show her a photo I took and ask why it was too dark or blurry, or not sharp enough, and figure out pretty quickly how to improve with the next shoot. - Alonya's style is approachable and no question ever felt too stupid to ask. I didn't know what ISO was, or shutter speed, or aperture, or how they interacted with natural light (indoor vs outdoor), and felt overwhelmed by the options my camera seemed to have. Alonya patiently walked me through each and showed me examples of how an image changed with the different settings. She gave me the confidence to go out and shoot and actually feel like I knew what I was doing. - Even though it wasn't necessarily the plan when I started working with Alonya, I was confident enough within my first year of shooting friends and family to begin charging clients (total strangers!) for my work. Very thrilling, humbling and rewarding way to see your skills develop over time. - I truly feel like everything I know about photography (photo taking and editing) I learned from Alonya, and I still go back to the materials she provided (almost 4 years later!) as a resource, because it is focused, helpful and super clear. I have used Jozu Photography for 4 photoshoot sessions including maternity, birth, newborn, and family sessions because Alonya is the most effortlessly talented photographer I know. She photographed my big old pregnant belly and made me look and feel gorgeous, which I thought was an impossible task. She also photographed the birth of my son, and they are the most magical, intimate, and beautiful photos I've ever seen. I am forever grateful to her for photographing the best day of my life. She was a fly on the wall throughout the whole birth, but somehow captured every single intimate moment from labor up until meeting our little baby. We will only use Jozu Photography for all of our future family photos. We recently took family photos with our now 1 year old son, and she is the most patient and understanding photographer. She never makes the session feel rushed, and she's very much in tune with the needs of the child, often stepping back to let our toddler just be himself instead of capturing the "perfect" shot. Alonya did an outdoor holiday photo shoot for our family. Not only did she get great pics, but she was really able capture the moment and even managed to make the midday light work great. The individual shots of our kids were awesome. Our school hired her for a school photo day and I was there all day to coordinate the time slots for families. Alonya is the best! We've done two photo sessions with her -- she captured the birth of our daughter in the hospital and then a couple weeks later took newborn photos of our little girl and our family. Alonya is such a professional -- she captured some really special shots in the hospital of our baby and of the baby with me and my husband. I initially was on the fence about birth photography -- but having gotten such amazing photos in that moment I'm so grateful to Alonya for being there. She absolutely professional -- stayed in the background so we didn't even know she was there, but when I was having mean contractions she jumped in to hold my hand and offer a back rub! We did the newborn/family shoot when the baby was under 2 weeks, and Alonya was fantastic. She was so patient with our 20mo old who was on the move the whole time and got him to sit still with us for photos. She took the time to make sure we got the shots we wanted, even though the session ran a little bit long. The lighting in our place isn't the best, and she was able to work with that no problem. The final photos she sent to us are incredible -- everyone we show them to are so impressed. I'm SO happy we did this (we didn't do photos with my 1st baby) and have so many sweet photos to choose from (too many!!). Alonya offers full service printing, framing, albums, etc all at a really fair price, and her turn around time to see the proofs is really speedy.
