Two thumbs up (and 4 paws up) for Alpen vet! Was coming into mammoth for a camping trip and learned very last minute that the mosquitos are pretty bad this year due to all the water from this winter. We don't really have mosquitos where we are from and our dog is not on any heart worm preventative. When I learned about the mosquitos (morning that we were supposed to hit the road) I called my vet in my home town and they weren't able to squeeze us in. I almost didn't bring my dog but decided to try to call a vet in mammoth and called Alpen. I explained my worry for the heart worm and they were happy to take me in that day!! Once we got into town, we stopped by and we're able to get some preventative. The lady at the front was so nice and helpful. Later that night when we pulled up to our first campsite there were HUNDREDS of mosquitos. Our car was swarmed from the second we pulled up. After some time prepping with bug spray we made our way out. Proud to say my dog seemingly got no bites over our 4 day stay all thanks to Alpen vet! We were camping in Silver Lake a few weeks ago and all three of our dogs had a kind of rash that looked like it might be ringworm. I called Alpen Vet and they told us to come in in an hour. When I got there, they said I had been there before. I didn't realize because they've moved, but this is the same vet that saved my beagle's life about 13 years ago. I woke up in the middle of the night to her throwing up blood and so so sick. I called at midnight and Dr. TesLa actually answered and said that he would meet me at the office in an hour. She had been infected with a bad virus and was on the verge of death. He kept her for three days and she was 100% better when I picked her up. I have forever been grateful for that emergency action! So this time, realizing it was the same doctor, I was so happy. He was great and gave us meds for our three dogs. His time to see three dogs and meds was under $100. Shocking for any vet! I see these horrible reviews and don't get it. Someone on here said that locals don't go to him. Fine. I'm a tourist in the area, but we come up often. The second day of our camping trip we hiked up to McLead Lake to play with both of our dogs. We were having a great time until our puppy comes limping out of the lake, blood pouring from her foot. She had ripped her nail to the base of her toe, and it would not stop bleeding. We thought she would be fine, but once we got her down the mountain we knew we needed to see a vet. Since we were camping we knew we couldn't help her keep it clean, running around in the dirt. We called Allen Vet Hospital and they told us to come right in. No nonsense, kind and caring vet, exactly what we needed in the moment. He got her sedated, assessed and bandaged up under an hour. We were in town for vacation and one of our dogs had some eye sensitivity. Turns out our senior dog had scratched his cornea and were given antibiotics. Additionally Dr Teslaa prescribed us antibiotics for periodontal bone infection which we didn't think could be treated without putting our dog under anesthesia which at his age could be a death sentence. While camping at a lake in the area, our Labrador found and quickly swallowed a large baited fish hook. Dr Tesla met us, an hour after closing. I camp at Silverlake every year and 2years in a row, I had a semi emergency with my Great Dane who started peeing blood (URI). I was able to be seen immediately and received antibiotics. One of those years, the office wasn't even open, but Dr Teslaa met us anyway. This year while camping, I made an appointment for my chihuahua to have a dental. I was pretty nervous bc she is only 4 pounds, but after talking w Teslaa, I felt a little better. Turns out she had to have 15 teeth extracted (which he told me would likely be the case). She did great and I was so relieved. While sedated, he even took the time to clip her nails (which is always a problem with her). The cost was about 1/4 of what I would've been charged in Los Angeles. I am so grateful that my girl is doing so well. I give Dr Teslaa's number to everyone I camp with in case anything happens to their animals. Bonus is that the front office is super nice and accommodating. We called this rude Dr today and were asking him questions about pricing and protocol, as my wife has been a zookeeper and veterinary assistant for 10 years. He rushed through the pricing and then put us on hold. He then came back and said he was getting other calls and if we wanted to make an appointment to do it, otherwise he had calls to get to. Honestly, we spoke to him for exactly 2 min according to my phone. He was abrasive and rude. After we have now read reviews I'm wondering if he is perhaps on the spectrum. I have a son who is on the spectrum and he is easily overwhelmed, doesn't understand social protocol, and is highly intelligent. That being said...we called a friend who lives here full time and he said NEVER bring our pets to this man. He's a terrible vet. All of the locals know this. read more

This Dr. Is amazing! I am from San Diego and I was camping near mammoth. My dog started crying every time she went to sit and bared her teeth at me if I tried to touch her stomach. I panicked because I thought it was a stomach issue, and the 24/7 vet line said I needed to take her in immediately. I panicked being so far from home and the Doctor let me come in that day. He was amazing and you can tell he loves animals. Within seconds he was able to tell my pup was a bit of a drama queen and it was just a sprained tail! TLDR: the vet treated my dog but was rushed and has terrible bedside manner. He allowed my dog to fall off the raised table and caught her body weight by her neck collar. My dog had an eye injury while traveling and I needed to have her examined. Alpen offered a same day appointment. When we arrived the receptionist was very nice and my dog was very happy and wagging her tail. We were taken to an exam room with a man who didn't introduce himself and I assumed was a vet tech. He got my dog on the table and raised it. When she started to fall because she has never been on a moving table he grabbed her by her collar pulling hard on her neck. He seemed annoyed that this happened and I was just hoping the vet was coming in soon. He actually was the vet. After my dog almost fell a second time I took her off the table. He explained to me how we need to "push forward and not move backwards" for about 5 minutes. My dog ended up needing sedation because at this point she was terrified and couldn't be held still. The vet kept repeating "well she must have had a bad experience before" She has always loved our vet in Phoenix and never been nervous by a doctor or a stethoscope at our regular visits. Dr Teslaa did examine her eye and give up antibiotics to treat the corneal abrasion so my dog is physically treated. However I have never experienced such an abrasive and rushed veterinary provider in my life. Later that day talking to the locals at a walking trail they said this is typical of this vet and it is known to avoid him. read more

Dr T you are a God send!!! Our dog Buster got hooked in his lower lip/gum and under his tongue with a treble hook. After much anxiety, we drove from June lake to Mammoth (20+ minutes drive). I called Alpen from June lake and asked for the emergency line. The Dr was in!!! Dr T gave Buster a local sedation and did his magic. For those who have pets, you can understand how devastating this can be. Dr. T was so patient with Buster and saved him from bleeding more than he did. Similar to other yelp reviews, I was visiting Mammoth Lakes with my service dog (two years old) and as I was checking her for any ticks on my last morning of my vacation, I found one small tick trying to attach itself but I removed it; but I noticed two red bites on her chest and one on her groin; flat, red, welts which were not there earlier in the morning during her daily brush-out. Panicked, I checked Yelp and drove to Alpen as I did not even want to chance getting into a vet in Bishop. The receptionist was very caring and said she'd seen these recently; the next patient was very kind to allow me to see the vet before she and her two pups as I had to check out of my hotel in 40 minutes. Gaylon Teslaa, DVM introduced himself to me and my dog with a confident, calm demeanor. As he examined my dog, he said he recognized the bites, not to know the bug (they reportedly had done titer tests to no avail); he calmed me down by "cutting to the chase" saying that a 10 day round of a generic antibiotic will ward off lyme disease. Thank you Dr. Teslaa and your receptionist (and your client) for seeing us so fast and allowing me to continue to advocate for my beloved service dog and partner! BTW, the bite welts were 95% gone in 24 hours and 100% gone in two days! read more

Unprofessional and unable to perform their job. We brought our dog in to get spayed and the vet yelled at us because our dog was scared. I've never met such an unprofessional vet. Don't waste your time dealing with this rude vet who can't even put a nervous dog to sleep. Their half built facilities aren't functioning yet. They tried to blame our dog for bumping into equipment that is not properly stored. I was conflicted about writing this review, as the doctor and staff were kind and prompt. However this vet's misdiagnosis of cancer on my 5 year old Cavalier let me traumatized and deeply unwell for days. As a result, I felt it was important to share my experience with potential patients, as well as the doctor and staff and Alpen Vet. I am a LA native who was in Mammoth for a week. On Feb 1st, I noticed my dog was scooting on the carpet, biting his tail and that his anal glands seemed full. In an effort to relieve him, I booked him an appointment with Alpen Veterinary to express his anal glands. The doctor proceeded to ask some questions about my dogs history and then did a physical. After expressing one gland, he mentioned that he would not be able to express the left one, as it was rock hard and therefor a malignant tumor. He was very matter of fact, wrote down the type of cancer on his prescription pad and implied the prognosis was bad. We then had a brief conversation about how I would need to decide between chemo/radiation vs a more natural path. As you can imagine, I was floored and to be honest, truly unwell. I immediately packed up all my belongings and drove straight home to LA, crying all 5.5 hours. I scheduled an appointment with my vet to get a second opinion. The "tumor" ended up being an abysses, which took some flushing and medication to get rid of. We are now over 2 weeks out and got clearance that everything looks good on my dog. No tumor, no more scooting, and no more tail biting. Obviously I am glad that the Alpen Vet's original prognosis is incorrect and I am so thankful to have a healthy dog. However, looking back on my appointment, it does strike me as strange that the doctor was so matter of fact about his malignant tumor diagnosis without a biopsy or additional check. Additionally, the tumor he diagnosed my dog with is apparently incredibly rare and typically in older dogs (my dog is only 5). I feel like that should have also been a sign that there should have been some additional checks before jumping to the cancer route. I want to reiterate, everyone was very nice at this vet. However, in the future I would caution the doctor from providing patients with statements about cancer being confirmed before certifying it with tests and going through other possibilities. read more

Great staff! Very knoweldgable vet. We came here few times with our GSD. Some emergency visits while on our skiing trip, when Dr. Teslaa's help allowed us to stay and enjoy skiing, because he took proper care of our GSD. Few times we came for regular visits and he was able to properly diagnose allergies and prescribe meds, supplements and shampoo combo that helped tremendously. Dr Teslaa and staff are nothing short of amazing. Thankfully he answered my phone call in the middle of the night on a Friday. Not too many of any vets will do that. He saved our dogs life after multiple vets could not diagnose even after spending thousands for inconclusive tests and no answers. Dr Teslaa even took him home with him over the weekend to make sure he had 24 hr care for a fraction of what I paid for testing alone at other places. I'd move to Mammoth just to have this vet close by. We live in Los Angeles and most vets here are like a manufacturing facility, take a number sort of situation. This "home town vet" is so amazing. He even called me back on a weekend when I left a message at his office saying I was worried about my dog and wanted to make an appointment for Monday morning. He also performed a surgery on my old French Bulldog to clear her airways - this is a surgery her first owners should have done and is common on Frenchies. Even at her old age, she weathered the surgery extremely well and is like a new dog! Dr. Teslaa and staff are wonder. Prices are extremely fair compared to what I've paid in Los Angeles. 10 stars! read more

Dr Teslaa seems like an eccentric scientist straight out of Back to the Future. Stepping into his office, is like entering the lab of a mad man, complete with flux capacitor. Our experience with him was really quick, yet thorough and very informational. Speaking with him, it seemed apparent he had many years of experience and arrived at diagnoses and treatment recommendations through logic and reasoning. Which, in our experience, isn't usually the case with most vets. In fact, we had visited two others before him, who gave two completely differing opinions. Ultimately, by following Dr Teslaa's recommendations, our dog was back to health and finally eating again (after 3 days of refusing to eat). read more

I would first like to point out that the only good reviews are not from locals living in Mammoth. Every local I have spoken to after my bad experience here said they refuse to bring their animals to this office because of Dr. Tesla's poor actions and inability to communicate. I recently brought my sick dog to his office. My dog has a history of being reactive and does not like when strangers reach for him or try to pet him. So as a responsible pet owner I have my dog wear a muzzle to protect everyone when going to the vet. I couldn't get in at the bishop vet in mammoth so I called alpine. I warned dr Tesla that my dog is reactive and fearful when strangers reach for his head. He did not give my dog any time to adjust to him and forced himself on my dog. My dog is a 100 lb large breed and fell off the elevated exam table in fear. He did this twice and the dr suddenly became very angry at me and at my dog and acted like he has never interacted with a fearful or reactive animal. I am very thankful my dog didn't tear a ligament or become injured from falling off this elevated exam table.... Eventually he yelled at me to get out of his office because he wouldn't be able to examine my dog because of his poor behavior.... Overall, I would not recommend going here. I feel for the nice women that work there with that man. read more

Dr. Teslaa is an exceptional vet! He is knowledgable and compassionate toward both the animals and people in his care. His calm, gentle demeanor and depth of animal experience reminded me of reading James Herriot. And his fees are also very reasonable. I first came in when my dog was having an emergency and we were seen right away. Despite it being a Friday afternoon and the office being closed the next day, he offered to keep her overnight so she could remain on IV fluids and under observation. Overnight, she quickly recovered from her acute hemorrhagic gastroenteritis. My dog is very afraid of new people and does not generally like to be handled by them, so treating her is usually difficult. But Dr. Teslaa's exceptional handling skills and calming energy put my dog at ease in a matter of hours -- I've never seen anyone else able to win her trust so quickly. Dr. Teslaa also recommended and formulated an herbal anti-anxiety medicine for my dog, which has contributed to an improvement in her reactivity toward strangers and guardedness. So while I wouldn't want to see my dog get so sick again, I feel fortunate it brought us to Dr. Teslaa and Alpen Vet. read more

We are frequent visitors to Mammoth and live in Calabasas. Before we left on vacation, our dog presented with symptoms which led to the discovery that she had stones in her bladder and would need antibiotics and a rigidly controlled diet. One week into our two week vacation, our LA vet called to say that bacterisl growth tests had now shown our dog was actually on the wrong medication for the stones, but that the veterinary Corp of which he was a part, no longer carried that medication...and that he could order it to be delivered to our house in a week or more. Having already subjected our dog to a week of useless antibiotics, I opted to pick up the Mammoth phonebook and found Dr Tesla. Despite the fact that it was very late on a Saturday afternoon (and the practice was closed), Dr. Tesla listened to me, made immediate arrangements to meet me at his practice, examined our dog, gave her the antibiotic she needed--which he did have in stock, and we were good to leave the following day as planned for a week in Tahoe before returning to LA. Not only was Dr. Tesla tender, professional, attentive and caring, but when we arrived, he rushed out to tell us that he had an emergency just show up and he had to deal with that first...which we totally understood...a man had backed over his dog in the driveway it seems. Dr Tesla was clearly anguished by the plight of the dog, though utterly controlled and professional. When we saw his evident affection for his patients we knew we were in great and capable hands. While out on our Saturday hike with our little guy, he injured what we thought was his foot. He was in lot of pain. We called Dr. TeSlaa at his office which was closed and got his cell number. He answered right away and said he would meet us in 15 minutes. Amazing! He was there in less than 15 minutes and checked over our dog figuring out it was his shoulder. We were in Mammoth for a week long vacation when our 11 month old puppy decided to get sick.......really sick and me being a true dog "mom" was panicked. I called and explained my situation and they were willing to move other patients to get us in. When I arrived I broke down, since this was the first time Bodee had been sick. Mo, who is the front desk queen gave me a hug and was super supportive, there are not many vets in LA that the staff would be so comforting or supportive. The doctor was amazing. He was super friendly and was so comforting that I was at ease immediately. They were so friendly and I could see that Dr. TeSlaa truly loves animals. He knew right away that like many city dogs he may just have a case of the altitudes.....he tested him right away (we waited maybe 10 minutes) and came out to personally administer the meds and tell me what to expect the next couple of days. It makes me want to move to Mammoth just so I can continue to use this vet. THEY ARE GREAT!!!!!! Just keep in mind it's Mammoth so they are open Mon-Friday. I took my 12 year old Golden Retriever one day at lunch time (called Dr Teslaa at home and he opened the clinic for me) when I realized she had suddenly gone blind. Dr Teslaa did some tests and put her on some medication restoring her health within a couple of days, but he said it may not be permanent. Sure enough, her eyesight was gone again after a couple of weeks and her health deteriorated quickly. Upon further tests, Dr Teslaa explained to me in great detail her prognosis, and gave her 3 weeks to live. I proceeded to get a second opinion with a specialist at VCA in Orange County who told me the same thing. Dr Teslaa not only was right about the diagnostic but was very thorough and considerate towards my financial needs at the time. Exactly 3 weeks from his original prognosis, she was ready to go and we took her to Dr Teslaa to be put down. He was extremely understanding, compassionate and caring during these difficult moments and am very grateful for that. I also called Dr Teslaa on a Sunday evening at home because our other dog ate something that poisoned her. He came to the clinic, again opening it for us, and got our girl back to her normal self by the next morning. I highly recommend him! He will come and take care of your pet at anytime that you have an emergency, and that to me, is priceless! read more

My cat got extremely sick with bladder stones and a UTI last week. Her illness came on very suddenly and honestly I thought she wouldn't make it. Dr. Teslaa seemed to have a very good knowledge of felines and had a great bedside manner with myself and my cat. Catheterization was required, as well as a flushing of my cats bladder. Dr. Teslaa stayed after hours on a Saturday to look after her. Once I came and picked her up Saturday evening he told me not to worry about the bill until next week. That's small-town service for you. One week on, she's pretty much made a full recovery (still on antibiotics). I've been told by a couple friends and neighbors that Dr. Tesla is a bad veterinarian, and they've had bad experiences with him. My experience however was nothing but positive. I was so grateful to find Alpen Veterinary Hospital. The whole process from scheduling an appointment, to the visit, and check ups were great. The staff there was so kind and helpful to me. I was really concerned about my dog's new behavior that he was exhibiting and Dr. TeSlaa took the time to answer all of my questions and address my concerns. He was very patient with us and I never felt rushed during my dog's examination. I felt as though he was genuinely concerned for the welfare of my dog. I have lived all over the country with my dogs, and it was nice to finally have an office visit with a Veterinarian who truly cared. My dog ended up having blood work run, among an x-ray and an EKG. The minute the blood results came in, I received an email from Dr. TeSlaa explaining his observations and where I should go from there. I greatly appreciated all of his help. I was also very happy that he wrote me prescriptions for my dog's medications and gave me his x-rays at no extra cost, since I was going to be moving from the area soon. Unfortunately after this, a couple of weeks later, I awoke to find my dog stumbling around and unable to walk properly. I was afraid that something was terribly wrong and called Dr. TeSlaa's cell phone. He immediately picked up and was able to get us in within a half hour. He was once again very helpful and made more suggestions to get my dog back on track. I was greatly appreciative of his professional emergency care. I will be definitely using Alpen Veterinary Hospital again, should I return to Mammoth. Dr. Teslaa was super helpful when we brought our Golden Retriever in with a hurt leg. Thankfully it was just a bruise and everything was OK. We left with a thorough routine visit that helped pinpoint some issues we were having with conjunctivitis and a yeast problem that will be well controlled now thanks to the doc. We took our 4lb dog to Alpen Vet Hospital after she ingested a small pine cone and began vomiting and diarrhea. She was listless and drooling and in very bad shape. The staff and doctor treated her right away. She had to stay overnight and the doctor checked on her every two hours. I was very impressed with their service and reasonable prices for treating an emergency situation. I was so panicked but the doctor said I could call at any time during the night to check on the dog.
