The dealership told me they'd have to replace the transmission, which was going to cost me upwards of $3,400. This is never something you want to hear out of nowhere. Fortunately, someone at Art's Automotive pointed me in the direction of Wilf's. Wilf's had a look at my car, confirmed the same problem the dealership found, and said they could just replace the stepper motor for about $1,200. I was more than willing to give that a try, especially given the great reviews here. They had to source the stepper motor, and it sounds like it wasn't easy to track it down, but they kept me in the loop with what was going on and when they'd expect it to arrive. My car was running well enough to keep going in the meantime; it was more of a question of inevitable failure at some point. When the day came for the operation, they let me have a courtesy car. Everything went smoothly, right on schedule, and my Versa has been humming along as well as before. Everyone I spoke with at Wilf's was pleasant, intelligent, courteous, and even fun to deal with. I got the sense they were honest and doing their best at all times. I hope not to need them again, but if any other transmission issues come up in the future, I know where I'm headed.

When my tow truck pulled up at 6:05 (they close at 6:00) they stayed behind to talk to me about what happened and were genuinely interested about the problem and getting to know the situation. When they diagnosed the problem (an almost destroyed timing belt) they ordered and replaced it the same day so that I was able to pick it up in less than 24 hours after I dropped it off. My car works perfectly now and I can be assured that the rest of my car is fine due to their thorough job. Pricing was as fair as it gets and more than reasonable for the job. I noticed when I picked the truck up that the water and fuel light was on and I thought that was a strange coincidence. Over the years this light has come on two or three times after a car wash, and it's an easy fix to clean out the water in the sensor connection. I did that and even replaced the sensor in the rear fuel water separator. The light was still on, even though the fuel looked clean, so I ended up taking it to a shop in Oak Harbor before driving to the Tetons, as that light was bothering me. It turns out the technician at Barrett had inadvertently pinched some wires that ran along the crossmember below the transmission mount when he reattached the cross number. Thus the cause of the water and fuel light. Barrett was extremely honorable and covered the cost of those wire repairs, and the shops diagnostic fee. So the only thing I was out was the cost of a water and fuel sensor and time. At the time of this post, the truck has nearly 832,000 miles as I just did a trip to Teton Valley and back to Washington and the transmission ran beautifully. The service work the technician did was otherwise perfect and this type of mistake could happen to anyone, so I do not fault Barrett and I would gladly use them again and intend to. The fact that they honored this situation without question is an indication of a shop that has integrity.

Mark assured me that they'll take an assessment of the issue and get back to me before doing any work. Later in the day I received a phone call from Mark. He shared with me the red fluid was not tranny fluid, however, the specialized coolant my duramax requires. He went on to describe that all fluid levels were appropriate and the tranny and transfer case were in fine shape. Despite feeling a bit embarrassed about not differentiating the difference between the tranny vs coolant fluids, I was extremely grateful that they did not take advantage of me and, instead, went on to show me where the issued was. Such honesty goes a long way these days. Based upon numerous recommendations from mechanics I trust and respect, and Barrett transmission's honesty (and the time they took to further investigate and show me the issue)., I'll be back with any transmission issues or maintenance needs that I might have. Thank you Mark and Cameron (the tech) for your professional and honest assistance. Charlie D, Ferndale

These two sons eventually branched off and opened up Pacific Driveline. Pacific driveline is a transmission shop that you can easily rely upon. They are honest, fair and they stand behind their work with integrity. When we first were looking to have our transmission rebuilt we were recommended by our mechanic to goto these guys as they supported various warranty groups and our coast-to-coast warranty would be validated with them. We did the rebuild and unfortunately it failed while we did a trip up to Kamloops (but not so bad). They stood behind their work and not only did they honor their own warranty; they also had the vehicle towed from Kamloops to their shop and helped us make alternative vehicle arrangements. It turned out that the part that was involved in the update (yes they do the updates during rebuilds) was defective. About a half year later we noticed that the transmission was starting to "gear hunt"; so I brought it over to John to inspect. We found also that the rear-differential was squealing during the test-drive. John replaced all of the solenoids and also preformed a rear-differential flush at NO COST. We could not be happier with the service that these two perform. They remained professional throughout our entire ordeal, were completely transparent with honesty and left us with a warm feeling of knowing that we have found a drivetrain shop that we could rely upon. I highly recommend Pacific Driveline~!

I called 5+ other mechanics in the city who all laughed at this cost. The most any of them would charge to run this diagnostic was $50. I took my car to another mechanic who charged $600 for the same job that The Garage quoted me $1100 for...and guess what? They ran the diagnostic for FREE before advising that any work be done. I watched him do this in about 2 minutes.
